NAIL AND CUTICLE CONDITIONING DEVICE Filed July 13, 1939 Patented Dec. 31, 1940 PATENT OFFICE 1 UNITED STATES 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a device for treating the finger nails and cuticle adjacent the nails. It is now a very common practice for persons, particularly women, to have polish applied to their nails. This polish usually contains a coloring matter. Due to the application of this polish the nails become unduly brittle and are thus easily broken or split and thus marred. It is recommended by manicurists and other authorities to soften the nails and cuticle by applying a softening agent, such as an oil, thereto. Such a softening agent to be effective must be left in contact with the nails for quite a period. A good time to apply such a softening agent is at night. It is difficult, however, to keep such an agent in contact with the nails and an oil such as commonly used will soil the bed clothes and night clothes.
It is an object of this invention to provide a very simple and efficient device by means of which a softening agent can be applied to the nails and cuticle so as to be quite effective without any danger of the softening agent coming in contact with the bed linen or other bed clothes.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device for applying a softening agent to the finger nails and cuticle comprising a sleeve adapted to receive the finger and having provision by means of which a body of absorbent material may be placed therein and easily adjusted into proper position.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device for softening the nails and cuticle comprising a sleeve adapted to receive the finger and having an opening at one side adjacent its end formed between overlapping layers of material, through which an absorbent material may be inserted and/or adjusted.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating the device and the manner in which the absorbent material is adjusted over the nail;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device;
Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through the device; and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the finger of the wearer in the device with the absorbent material in place.
Referring to the drawing, a device is shown comprising a sleeve or stall Ill which is of general cylindrical shape having a closed end Illa and being arranged to receive the finger of the wearer. At the top side of the device or the side overlying the finger nail the device has a layer of material lob-having a free edge I00 6 some distance from the closed end of the device. The device also has a layer of material lOd which extends under the layer Iflb for some distance so as to be overlapped by layer [017 and layer [0d has a free edge llle some distance from the edge 10 Inc. The layers I01) and [0d extend substantially halfway around the device and as shown to a seam II. It will thus be seen that there is an opening I2 between layers lflb and id into the sleeve l0. Said sleeve [0 is shown as provided with a hem ID) at its open end and as having a hem at the edge We. The sleeve I0 is made of moisture-proof material, preferably of light weight. One material which has been found to be very satisfactory in practice is rubberized silk.
A body of absorbent material I3 is provided and this may be cotton or other similar material. The material I3 is saturated with the oil or softening agent to be applied to the nails and cuticle. The wearer can insert the finger into 'the sleeve and the material l3 can then be inserted through opening 12 by the use of an orange stick or other implement l5 and the material can be nicely adjusted over the nail Ma of the finger M by inserting the end of the implement through the opening [2. The material I3 being disposed over the nail and cuticle the softening agent is effectively applied. The device can be worn during the night and there will be no chance for the oil to get out and soil the bed clothes or night clothes of the wearer. If preferred the material l3 can be placed in the sleeve before the finger is inserted therein and the material will then be adjusted and disposed in proper position by inserting the implement i5 through the opening I2. The sleeve l0 and the material I3 can be very readily removed when desired. I
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and efiicient device for applying a softening agent to the finger nails and cuticle. The device is very simple and can be easily and inexpensively made. Its use is very convenient and the oil or other softening agent can be applied to the nails and cuticle without objectionable incidents or results. The nails are effectively softened without the necessity of taking time for the operation in the daytime and without inconvenience.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
What is .claimed is:
1. A device for treating the finger nails and/ or cuticle comprising a sleeve made of quite flexible waterproof material and constructed and arranged to extend the length of the wearers finger, said sleeve being of substantially uniform diameter and being open at one end and closed at the other, a body of absorbent material disposed in the closed end of said sleeve adapted to over-, lie the finger nail, said sleeve having an opening extending transversely thereof at its top or finger nail side spaced from said body of material toward the open end of said sleeve through which opening said material may be placed and through which a tool may be inserted to adjust said material.
2. A device for treating the finger nails comprising a sleeve constructed and arranged to extend the length of the wearers finger, the same being made of quite flexible moisture-proof material being of substantially uniform diameter and having an open end and a closed end, said closed end being adapted to receive a body of absorbent material for overlying the finger nail, said sleeve having overlapping layers at its top or finger nail side extending a short distance longitudinally thereof and spaced some distance from the closed end of said sleeve, the transverse edges of said overlapping layers being free so that an opening is formed into said sleeve between said layers, through which opening said absorbent material may be placed and adjusted.
3. A device for treating the finger nails comprising a sleeve constructed and arranged to extend the length of the wearers finger, said sleeve being made of quite flexible waterproof material having one end open and its opposite end closed and having an opening thereinto at its top or finger nail side, which opening extends longitudinally some distance of said sleeve between layers of material forming said sleeve, the closed end of said sleeve being adapted to receive a body of absorbent material which may be inserted through said opening and adjusted over the nail of the wearer by atool inserted through said opening.
