TOY
Filed. April 27, 1939 2 mvelzlr.
Patented Dec, 24, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE",
V T'OY WladimirBuben, North Woburn, Mass. f Application April 27, 1939, Serial No. 270,454
4 Claims. (01. 46-63) he vide, in the preferred form as shown in Figures This invention relates to toys, and more particularly to those toys commonly referred to as whirligigsfwhich furnish a source of amuse- 15 direction and by moving inwardly allow said,
discs to spin in the opposite direction, music being created by air rushing through openings in the combs and vibration of the reeds caused by the revolving motion of said discs. The combs 20 are arranged flatwise transversely of the discs' and the openings therein and the reeds face in I the direction of rotation of the discs whereby making vibration of the reeds is obtained.
Another object of this invention is to create 25 a toy simple to manufacture and low in cost.
Such toy may be made from wood, fiber, rubber, cardboard, Celluloid, Bakelite, metal or other material, or from any combination of two or more of such materials.
30 A still further object is to provide a toy of the type described and illustrated that can be operated easily by even a small child.
These and other objects will be apparent by referring to the accompanying drawing, in which 35 similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention; 1
Figure 2 is a sectional view showing the cross- 40 bar, combs and reeds radially in section and elevation, and taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 3;
3-3 of Figure 2;
45 Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 1 to 5 inclusive, two discs I, with combs-2 interposed between said discs'and secured in a solid cross-bar 3 by meansof elements 4 which are glued or welded to the cross-bar and combs. i5 Mounted onsaid combs 2 are metal strips 5 having elongated slots 6 and reeds l riveted to said strip 5 at 8, said discs, when revolved, producing a musical sound to the amusement of the child. I
c In Figure 5, it will be seen that the discs I and the cross-bar 3 have two holes therethrough shown at 9 and I0. Threaded through said holes and looped at l2 on one side'is a string l2 twisted at-its opposite ends as shown. A similar string l3, twisted and looped at I3 in a like manher as before-described, is also shown.
In a modified form, as shown in-Figure 6, I provide discs I witha single comb 2' and a plate 5 having anelongated slot 6 and reed l riveted at 8' interposedbetween said discs. Ar-
ranged at 90 to the comb 2' is a solid bar 3.
In said bar 3' are the holes 9' and It for the strings to pass therethrough.
In the modified form, as shown in Figure '7, .I show the plates 5" with reeds l thereon placed adjacent one another for the purpose of producing a musical chord. The discs I", the combs 2", the cross-bar 3", the elements- 4", and rivets 8" are also shown.
It will be observedthat in each of these forms of myinvention the comb members, including the comb carrying metal plates or strips, are arranged flatwise transversely of andbetween the" discs, and that the slots or openings therein and the cooperating sound producing reeds face in the direction of rotation of the rotary body. By
' this construction and arrangement of the parts air currents are produced in the rotation of the body which passwithv force through the openings 40 in the comb members and effect a very forcible and wide amplitude of vibratory motion of the.
reeds to cause the production of a maximum and in its operation, may be made by' those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention, It is the intention,
therefore, to be limited only as indicated by the I scope of the claims. 7
Having thus described my invention I claim: 1. In a device of the character described, a rotatable body comprising a pair of spaced discs, a cross bar arranged between and connecting said discs, a comb member fixed to and extending at right angles to the cross bar and arranged radially of and fiatwise transversely of and between the discs, said comb member having an opening therein, and a sound producing reed carried by the cross bar and disposed in a1ine-, ment with the opening in the comb member, said, opening and reed facing in the direction of rotation of the rotatable body. 2. In a device of the character described, a rotatable body comprising a pair of spaced discs, a cross bar arranged between and connecting said discs, a plurality of comb members fixed to and extending at right angles from the bar and arranged fiatwise transversely of and between the discs, each of said comb members havingan opening therein, and sound producing reeds carried by the cross bar and arranged in alinement with the openings, said openings and reeds facing in the direction of rotation of the body.
3. In a device of the character described, a rotatable body comprising a pair of spaced discs, a cross bar arranged between and connecting said discs, a plurality of comb members fixed to and extending at right angles from the bar and arranged fiatwise transversely of and between the discs, plates disposed in parallel relation to the comb members and having openings therein, and sound producing reeds fixed to the plates and disposed between the plates and comb members in alinement with the openings in the plates, said openings and reeds facing in the direction of rotation of the body.
4. In a device of the character described, a rotatable body comprising a pair of spaced discs, a
cross bar arranged between and connecting said 'disks,'a plurality of comb members fixed to and extending at right angles from the bar at different points about the axis and arranged flatwise transversely of and between the disks, a plurality of plates disposed side by side in parallel relation to each comb member and having openings therein, and sound producing reeds fixed to the plates and disposed between the plates and comb -members in alinement with the openings in the plates, said openings and reeds facing in the direction of rotation of the body.
