Patented Dec. 17, 1940 UNITED STATES 23,125,554 TIME PAYMENT COUPON BOOK Clarence A. Couch, Buffalo, N. Y., assignor to Remington Rand Inc., Buffalo, N. Y.
Application October 27, 1939, Serial No. 301,586
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a time payment coupon book adapted for use in connection with time payment accounts.
It has been found that by providing a purchaser with a series of numbered coupons corresponding to the number of time payments to be made in connection with a time purchase or loan, in which the purchaser detaches a coupon and encloses it with a payment, that considerable expense is saved in connection with the keeping of the account over previous systems in vogue.
The present invention provides a book in which the purchaser has a permanent record of the payments made on a time payment plan and at the same time is provided with a series of slips or coupons that are to be forwarded one with each payment, the amount of the payment being entered on the slips simultaneously with the entry of the record by the purchaser on his permanent record sheet in the book. The slip is detached and forwarded with the payment to the seller who is enabled by the account number stamped on the slip to make entry and give the purchaser credit on his account. The book is constructed to provide a convenient arrangement for obtaining this result by having a series of payment sheets bound in a cover in which each sheet is provided with a binding strip portion and the remainder of the sheet is detachable therefrom with a carbon sheet on top and inside of these payment sheets and a permanent record sheet on the inside of the book forming the center or top sheet.
All of the sheets are permanently bound together in the cover. With this construction the entry of a payment on the permanent record sheet provides a simultaneous entry on the adjacent payment sheet which may then be de- 40 tached and forwarded with the payment, while the permanent record sheet in the cover remains bound together with the binding strip portion of each payment sheet.
A protector sheet is also provided adjacent the carbon sheet to prevent the adjacent payment sheet from being smudged during handling of the book in making out the account and previous to the time when it is to be used for recording and detachment of the first slip. At this time 50 the protector sheet is torn out in order that the carbon sheet will make the carbon copy on the adjacent payment sheet.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the book opened at the center.
Fig. 2 shows the payment book in perspective and in disassembled relation.
The book includes a cover I preferably constructed to fold along thecenter line at 2 which may be reinforced with a linen strip 3 extending around the central fold portion of the cover and also providing a covering for the binding of the book. Inside the cover are arranged a plurality of sheets 4 that for the purposeof this descrip tion will be referred to as "payment sheets.
Each of these payment sheets includes a central binding strip 5 that overlies the fold portion of the cover so that separable sheet sections 6 are provided at opposite sides thereof and at each end of the sheet that are detachable from binding strip 5 along lines of perforations 1. As many of these sheets 4 may be provided as are necessary for the number of time payments to be made. On the inner time payment sheet is superimposed a thin tissue protector sheet 8.
A carbon sheet 9 is superimposed on the inner face of protector sheet 8 with its carbon face disposed toward the protector sheet. Then, a permanent record sheet I0 is superimposed on the carbon sheet and forms the center sheet in the book. This permanent record sheet will be made of heavy paper such as usually used for ledger sheets and will have a suitable series of rulings thereon as illustrated in the drawing to provide a blank form in which provision is made for entry of the name and address at H, with an account number printed thereon as indicated at l2, the same account number being printed on each of the payment sheets in the same relative position. Then, a series of columns will be provided for the entry of the date, amount of payment and other entries corresponding to the information indicated at the head of each column as shown in the drawing. The columns will be divided by a series of horizontal lines numbered consecutively as indicated at [3 to show the number of the payment being made and entered.
The pages are permanently bound together by means of binding stitches indicated at M or other suitable binding means well known in the art. This binding means will extend along the center line of the book and will extend through the central portion of the permanent record sheet and the cover and the central portion of the binding strip of each payment sheet, the outer portion of this binding means being covered by the fabric strip 3 in order to provide a neat appearing book construction.
The book is constructed as illustrated so that two groups of pages are provided, one on each side of the center line. .As a result each payment sheet provides two detachable slips that may be forwarded with a time payment remittance.
In using the book the seller usually enters the name and address and the terms of payment in the places provided on the permanent record sheet, and at the same time registers the account number on an index card the name and address, terms of payment and any other necessary information in connection with the contract of purchase. Then, when the time for the first deferred payment arrives, the purchaser who is given the book, enters the amount of the payment on the first line under the column entitled Payment, having just previously torn out the tissue protector sheet at one side of the book under the part of the permanent record sheet where the entry is to be made. The balance remaining due may then be entered in the column entitled Balance and the date on which the entry is made is entered in the Date column.
All of these entries are made opposite the line numbered t, indicating that this is the first deferred payment. The purchaser then lifts up the carbon sheet and the permanent record sheet and manually detaches the slip or coupon on which the carbon entry has been entered along the line of perforations. The purchaser may then enter his name and address on the proper lines of this sheet, or if desired, merely forward the slip With the remittance for this payment in an envelope to the seller who then enters the amount of the payment in the record.
This payment book thereby provides the purchaser with a permanent record of all of the payments made and all other information entered in connection with the account on the permanent record sheet in the book and at the same time provides a series of detachable sheets on which carbon copies are simultaneously made with the entry of the payment that may be detached and forwarded with the remittance.
The invention claimed is:
A time payment book comprising a cover having a central fold line, a payment sheet having a central fold line and central binding strip from which the ends forming slips are individually detachable along lines of perforations, a protector sheet overlying the payment sheet, a carbon sheet overlying the protector sheet with its carbon face disposed toward said protector and payment sheets, a permanent record sheet superimposed on said carbon sheet, all of said sheets having their edges coincident with and arranged successively inside of said cover and foldable therewith along the central line thereof, and
' binding means extending through all of said sheets and cover for permanently binding them together in book form along said central line, whereby the portions of the sheets on each side of said central line form record portions, the protector sheet normally protecting the adjacent payment sheet from becoming smudged with carbon from the carbon sheet in handling the book until ready for use when said protector sheet has the portion at one side of the center torn out thereby allowing use of the sheets on that side of the book to receive a record of a payment enteredon the permanent record sheet with a simultaneous carbon copy on the payment sheet, and said payment sheet slip being then detached along the line of perforations from the binding strip for forwarding with the payment recorded.
