Description

G. V.v LUGE. Trunk-Lock.
WITNESSES: INVENTUFL= /afiee.s Q
N,PETERS, PNOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D C- UNITED Snares PATENT OFFICE.
GREENLEAF V. LUOE, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNK-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,359, dated December 9, 1879 application filed V To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GREENLEAF V. Loon,
of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Locks,
of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whichv are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
Figure l is a front elevation of my improved lock and the supplemental locking devices connected'therewith. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the reverse'side of the lock. Fig. 3 is a view of the reverse side of a portion of the front lock-plate with the lock mechanism removed. 'Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the operating mechanism of the lock. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 6 is a transverse and nearly horizontal section of the lock mechanism and adjacent parts on the dotted line a; w in Figs. 1 and 4. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the key which operates my improved the lock mechanism; 0, the device with which the key engages, and through which said key operates the lock-bolts; D, the lock-bolt of the main lock; D D the lock-bolts of the supplemental locking devices; E E, rods which connect the bolts D D to the bolt D; F, a spring-seated locking-pin, which engages in a corresponding recess, m', in the inner side of the plate B, and thus prevents the device 0 from turning except when this pin is pushed back by the key in looking or unlocking the lock G, the spring against which the pin F rests; H, the key, which is bored out to fit over the stem 0 on the device 0. It is also cut away at the side at f to fit the pin F, and has a projection, is, which engages in the notch k in the device 0, thereby turning said de vice, and, through the connection shown in parts are very strong and simple, that the movement of the locking-pin F is transverse to that of the lock-bolt D, and that therefore no jar of the bolt or catch can disturb the engagement of said pin, and that the distance between the pin F and recess k must be identical with that between the notch f and projection 70 on the key otherwise the key could not fully enter the lock and as the distance may be varied a large number of times before again reaching the same relative positions as at first, a large number of locks may be made in which none of the keys will fit any other than its own lock.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple, but at the same time strong and secure, locking attachment for trunks,
chests, packing-boxes, tool-chests, 8250., and
this object is attained by the construction and arrangements of parts hereinbeforedescribed. Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the plate 13, recessed at b for the reception of the device 0, and having in the side of the recess 1) the smaller recess, m, for the reception of one side of the transversely-moving bolt F, the device 0, having stem 0, spring-seated bolt F, and notch k, the trunk-key H, having a projection, k, and a recess, f, and the lock-bolt and catch mechanism, all substantially as shown and specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 25th day of June, A. D. 187 9.
GREENLEAF V. LUOE;- [L. s.] In presence of- 0. BRADFORD, W. L. CORNELIUS.
