Description
0. UTTERBAGK & J. J. RAINS. Draft-Equalizer.
No. 222,333. Patented Dec. 2,1879,
N.FE|'ERS, PHOTO-UTNOGRAFHKR. WASHINGTON. D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
OSCAR UTTERBAGK AND JESSE-J. RAINS, OF HILLSDALE, IOWA.
'lM PIROVEMENT IN; DRAFT-EQUALIZERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,333, dated December 2, 1879; application filed July 7, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, OSCAR UITERBAGK and JESSE J. RAINS, of Hill'sdale, in the county of Mills, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
' Our invention relates to three-horse equalizers; and it consists more particularly in forming'a joint in the long arm of the equalizer, so that the same maybe turnedup to pass through an ordinary gate.
Our invention further consists in the general construction and arrangement of the equalizer, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figurel is a perspective view of our threehorse equalizer. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the v pivot passing through the center of the tongue.
The lever 0 extends a suitable distance on the other side of the tongue, and is to have the single-tree for the one horse connected to its outer end. p v I To the outer end of the bar B is pivoted a short arm or lever, D, which extends over and is pivoted to the inner end of the long arm or lever G. The double-tree for thetwo horses is to be connected to the inner end of the short arm or lever D. A short chain, a, connects the tongue back of the equalizerwith the inner end of the bar or lever D, for holding the same in position.
The long arm or lever O is made in two parts, jointed together at b in sucha manner that the outer portion can be turned upward and over for the purpose of shortening the le- .ver in passing through a gate. Over the jointed lever O is passed a sliding clasp or keeper, F, for holding the same stiff when in use. p
' Having thus fully described ourinvention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a three-horse equalizer, the long arm or lever 0, formed with a joint at b, and provided with the sliding clasp F, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the tongue A, of the bar B, long jointed lever 0, short lever D, and chain a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. p
In testimony that we claim. the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 17th day of June, 1879. V
OSCAR UTTERBAOK. JESSE J. RAINS.
