This invention relates to a hair curler, and more particularly to a curler comprising a hair winding mandrel, a jaw to clamp the ends of the hair to be wound, a connector to pivotally fasten these members together, and a clasp to embrace the wound hair and to retain the curler in place.

An object of the invention is to provide a curler of this type having its component parts of such construction that they may be easily and expeditely assembled with a minimum of labor.

Another object is to provide a curler in which the jaw is pivotally fastened to the mandrel by means of a connector received in slots and grooves in said members.

A further object is to provide a construction that permits the use in the assembly of a clasp member in the form of a wire loop having its ends permanently secured together prior to its assembly with the mandrel and jaw.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing illustrating a springless form of curler,

The curler comprises a cylindrical or tapered hair-winding form or mandrel l0, and a hairclamping jaw I I mounted lengthwise thereon, the two members being pivotally connected at their rear end portions l2 and I3 by connecting means hereinafter described. The members It and H,

except for the construction of their rear end portions, may be of usual form and made of molded plastic substance, metal, or other suitable material.

The curler further comprises a hair-clasp M in the form of a wire loop which differs from the ordinary wire loop in that its inturned ends l5 are permanently closed or secured together at l6 prior to assembly of the clasp with the other 55 parts of the curler. The clasp may be provided with a roller l1 or other means for temporarily fastening it in closed position.

According to the present invention the clasp I4 is swingably mounted on the mandrel H) by placing its pre-closed end in a transverse slot or opening l8 in the rear end portion l2 of the mandrel and holding it in place therein by the ears l9 formed at the sides of the rear end portion l3 of the jaw. These ears have circular edges that close the entrance to the slot and keep it closed throughout the range of swinging movement of the jaw.

The curved edges of the ears are preferably seated in similarly curved recesses 20 in the sides of the rear end portion I2 of the mandrel to restrain longitudinal displacement of the jaw without interfering with its swinging movement. It is to be noted that the cars do not function to connect the jaw and mandrel but only to hold the clasp in place and to restrain longitudinal and lateral displacement of the jaw relatively to the mandrel. The pivotal connection of the jaw and mandrel is effected solely by the connecting means hereinafter described. i

The rear end portion of the jaw II has a centrally disposed lug 2| formed with a longitudinal slot 22 for receiving the cross-piece 21 of the connector, and with an inclined or rounded bottom wall 23 to limit the extent of the opening movement of the jaw. The lug is spaced from the ears l9 to leave openings 24 into which the narrowed portions 25 of the side Walls of the rear end l2 of the mandrel partly extend, as seen in Figs. 4 and 5. A groove 26 is formed in the inner face of each of the walls 25 to receive the arms 28 of the connector. These grooves, in the assembly position of the parts, are in registration with the open sides of the slot 22.

The members I0 and II are pivotally connected by a non-resilient wire connector which is shown detached in Fig. 4 and in assembled position in Figs. 4 and 5. The connector is preferably U- shaped having a cross-piece 2! and substantially parallel arms 28, although it may be of any other suitable shape and form. The arms or ends of the connector are engaged in the grooves 26 while the cross-piece 2'! extends transversely through the slot 22 and constitutes the fulcrum pin about which the jaw pivots or turns.

In assembling the parts of the curler the clasp 50 I4 is placed in the transverse slot I8 of the mandrel l6, and then the jaw I l is mounted upon the mandrel. Finally, the connector, with its crosspiece 27 extending forwardly as shown in Fig. 3, is slipped into place in the grooves 26 and slot 22,

and is pushed home against the inner wall 29 of said slot. The two members In and II are connected together pivotally solely by this connector which is held in the rear end of the mandrel and upon which the rear end of the jaw is pivoted.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that this invention provides a curler of such construction that its parts may be readily and quickly assembled, and in which the fulcrum pin that pivotally connects the jaw and mandrel is disposed wholly within the rear end of the mandrel with no projecting parts to catch in the hair.

While I have described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the claims.

I claim:

1. A hair curler of the character described comprising a mandrel, a clamping jaw extending lengthwise of the mandrel, said jaw having one end pivotally mounted on one end of the mandrel, and a connector for pivotally connecting the jaw and mandrel, said connector having its end held in grooves in the inner faces of the pivoted end of the mandrel and having a portion that extends transversely through a slot in the pivoted end of the jaw to provide a fulcrum pin about which the jaw pivots.

A hair curler of the character described comprising a mandrel, a clamping jaw extending lengthwise of the mandrel, said jaw having one end pivotally mounted on one end of the mandrel, and a connector for pivotally connecting the jaw and mandrel, said connector being U-shaped having substantially parallel arms engaged in opposed grooves in the inner faces of the pivoted end of the mandrel and having a cross-piece that extends transversely through a slot in the pivoted end of the jaw to provide a fulcrum pin about which the jaw pivots.

A hair curler of the character described comprising a mandrel, a clamping jaw extending lengthwise of and pivotally mounted on one end of the mandrel, and a clasp swingably mounted on the mandrel adjacent the point of pivotal mounting of the jaw, said clasp having one end disposed in a transverse slot in the pivoted end of the mandrel and held thereinby portions of the jaw that close the slot and maintain it closed throughout the range of pivotal movement of the jaw.

A hair curler of the character described comprising a mandrel, a clamping jaw extending lengthwise of and pivotally mounted on one end of the mandrel, and a clasp in the form of a closed wire loop, said clasp having one end swingably mounted in a transverse slot in the pivoted end of the mandrel and being held therein by ears on the pivoted end of the jaw which ears have curved edges that close the slot and maintain it closed throughout the range of pivotal movement of the jaw.

A hair curler of the character described comprising a mandrel, a clamping jaw extending lengthwise of and pivotally mounted on one end of the mandrel, and a clasp in the form of a closed wire loop, said clasp having one end swingably mounted in a transverse slot in the pivoted end of the mandrel and being held therein by ears on the pivoted end of the jaw which ears have curved edges that close the slot and maintain it closed throughout the range of pivotal movement of the jaw, the curved edges of the ears being seated in similarly curved recesses in the sides of the pivoted end of the mandrel.

A hair curler of the character described comprising a mandrel, a clamping jaw extending lengthwise of and pivotally mounted on one end of the mandrel, a clasp in the form of a closed wire loop, and a connector for pivotally connecting the jaw and mandrel, said clasp having one end swingably mounted in a transverse slot in the pivotal end of the mandrel and being held therein by ears on the pivoted end of the jaw which ears have circularly curved edges that close the slot and maintain it closed throughout the range of pivotal movement of the jaw, said connector being held and disposed wholly within the pivoted end of the mandrel and having a portion that extends transversely through a slot in the pivoted end of the jaw to provide a fulcrum pin about which the jaw pivots, the center of curvature of the curved edges of the ears being in direct line with the axis of the fulcrum pin.

A hair curler of the character described comprising two cooperating pivotally connected members and a clasp swingably mounted on one of said members adjacent the point of pivotal connection, said clasp having one end disposed in a transverse slot in one of said members, said members having complementary shaped male and female portions, the male portion of which closes the slot and maintains it closed throughout the range of relative pivotal movement of the two cooperating members.

8. A hair curler of the character described comprising two cooperating clamping members, one of the members having an interior transverse slot, a pivot pin extending through said slot with its ends disposed wholly Within the other member.

9. A hair curler of the character described comprising two cooperating pivotally connected clamping members, one of said members being provided at the pivoted end with a lug having a transverse slot, said lug received in a recess in the other member, a pin having its ends disposed wholly within the last mentioned member and extending transversely through the slot of the lug of the other member.
