Description

Combined Slate-Gleaner and Penoif-Holder.
No. 221,833. Patented Nov. 18,1879.
INVENTOR: 7%fma/ WITNBSSEW NPEYEHS, PHOTO'LITHDGRAPMER. wAsHmamN, 0,0
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORITZ LEINER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMBINED SLATE-CLEANER AND PENCIL-HOLDER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Momrz LEINER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slate-Cleaning Device and Pencil-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The figure is a side view of my improved device, parts being broken away to show the construction.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for the use of school-children and others who may be required to make much use of a slate, by the use of which they may readily keep their slates clean and in proper condition for use, and which will also serve as a pencil-holder.
The invention consists in the combination of the vessel or cup provided with a sponge upon its lower part, the stopple provided with sponges at one or both ends, and the cord provided with the loop and the hook, either or both, with each other, and in the combination of one or more pieces of rubber tube with the cord to receive and hold a pencil or pen, as hereinafter 'fully described.
A represents a small vessel, made of metal or other suitable material, and the mouth of p which is closed with a cork or other stopple,
B. The stopple B has an arm formed upon or attached to its inner end, and extending nearly to the bottom of the vessel or cup A.
To the inner end of the projecting part of the stopple B is attached a small sponge, G, which should reach to, or very nearly to, the bottom of thevessel or cup A.
To the upper end of the stopple B is attached a larger piece of sponge, D, and to and around the lower part of the cup A is secured a still larger piece of sponge,E. The sponges G D E may be secured in place by fine wire, strong thread, or other suitable means.
With this construction the sponge C is used for applying water to the slate, the sponge D No. 221.833, dated November 18, 1879 3 application filed May 31, 1879.
for rubbing the wet slate to clean it, and the sponge E for wiping it dry. The sponge C, attached to the inner end ofthe stoppleB, may be omitted, and a small hole formed through .the said stopple, so that the sponge D maybe wet by inverting the cup A and shaking it a little; but this is objectionable, as the water is liable to shake out while the deviceis being carried, and I prefer the construction first described.
To the upper part of the cup A are attached the ends of an elastic or other cord, F, which is provided with a loop, f, so that the device may be hung upon a button of the clothing, or with a hook, f so that it may be attached to clothing that is without buttons, or with both loop and hook.
Upon the cord F are placed one or more pieces of rubber tube, G, of such a size that the end of a slate or lead pencil, or of a penholder, may be pressed into them, and thus safely held, so as to be ready for use when desired. Any other equivalent absorbing material may be used instead of .the sponges O D E, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the vessel or cup A, provided with a sponge, E, upon its lower part, the stopple B, provided with the sponges 0 D, and the cord F, provided with the loop f and the hook 1, either or both, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of one or more pieces of rubber tube, G, with the cord F, to receive and hold a pencil or pen, substantially as herein shown and described.
MORITZ LEINER.
