IMPR OVEM ENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,803, dated November 18, 1879 application filed August 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER GERGES, of Skippack, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a side View of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved cultivator, which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, thoroughly destroying the weeds, and moving the soil to and around the plants.
The invention consists in a single beam combined with standards and auxiliary blocks and bolts, as hereinafter described.
A represents the beam, to the forward end of which is attached a clevis, B, to receive the draft. 0 is a strap, the bend of which passes over the beam A, beneath the upper arm of the clevis B, and which is secured in place by a bolt passing through its arms and through the beam A.
To and between the ends of the strap 0 is pivoted a wheel, D, which is about ten inches in diameter. The wheel D supports the for ward end of the beam A, and forms a fulcrum for guiding and controlling the cultivator.
The beam A is about five feet long, and to the right-hand side of its middle part is bolted the upper end of the standard E. A block, 6, is interposed between the standard E and the beam A, to bring the said standard to the proper distance from the said plow-beam.
To the left'hand side of the beam A, about midway between the standard E and the rear end of the said plow-beam, is bolted the upper end of the standard F. To the lefthand side of the rear end of the beam A is bolted the upper part of the standard G, a block, g, be ing interposed between the said standard and beam to bring them to the proper distance apart.
To the outer side of the standard G is bolted the upper end of a standard, H, which is kept at the proper distance from the said standard G by a block, h, interposed between them.
The standards G H and the blocks g h are secured by one and the same bolt, which passes through them and through the beanr A. The standard H is inclined to the rearward, to bring its lower end to the proper dis tance in the rear of the lower end of the standard G.
The draft-strain upon the standards E F G H is sustained by the brace'rods 6 f g 7L2, the rear ends of which are attached to the said standards. The forward ends of the braces 9 7L2 are held by the bolt that secures the standard F to the beam A. The forward ends of the braces c f are held by the bolt that secures the forward ends of the handles I to the opposite sides of the forward part of the beam A.
The handles I are connected and held at the proper distance apart, and are supported at the proper height by the round 6-, which passes through them through the upwardly projecting end of the standard G, through the upper end of the upright J, and through the upper end of the brace K. The lower ends of the upright J and brace K are se cured to the right-hand side of the rear end of the beam A by the bolt that secures the standards Gr H and the blocks 9 h to the said beam A.
To the lower ends of the standards E F are also, the wide forward plows, L, and the nar row rear plows, M, will distribute the resist ance so that the line of draft will be in the line of v the beam A, and will thus prevent any side draft.
