Another object of the invention is to provide a combination sheet and pillowcase which can be installed on a bed in a more sanitary, manner than the separate sheet and pillowcase now in use.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combination sheet and pillow case which will have the same appearance when in use as the conventional sheet and pillowcase.

'Still another object of the inventionis to provide a combination sheet and pillowcase for Pullman cars, steamships, hospitals and the like which will be economical to manufacture and which will also materially reduce the laundering expense now required for separate sheets and pillowcases.

' It is-a well known fact that the expense of laundering sheets and pillowcases incurred in operating Pullman cars, steamships, hospitals and the like is very high and if the use of separate pillowcases could be eliminated, a material reduction would be effected. However, merely placing a sheet over both the mattress and pillow is most unsatisfactory since it does not permit of any relative movement between the mattress covering portion and the pillow covering portion, nor does it provide for a space for placing the hand or arm under the pillow which many sleepers find'a most comfortable position.

It is also well known that there is much petty thieving of pillowcases by travelers in sleeping cars and steamships and the cost of replacement is very high overthe period of a year.

Moreover, while sleeping car porters and bedroom stewards are carefully trained how to insert pillows in cases with minimum handling of the pillows, it is still apparently necessary for them to hold the pillows close to them when inserting it in a case which is held by the hands andmany travelers consider this most objectionable.

We accomplish the foregoing objects of the invention and others, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, and overcome the objectionable features of the conventional separate sheet and pillowcase by means of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings in which the construction shown in Fig. 2;

In order to facilitate the tucking in of the sheet 86 under the mattress and under the ends of the pillow, it has been found desirable to provide slits 8 at the longitudinal edges of the sheet just beneath the fold 3 which is the portion which covers the lower edge of the pillow. It will thus be seen that our improved construction will have all the functions and the same appearance when in use as the conventional separate sheet and pillowcase. The pillow or pillows, if two are desired, can be easily inserted in the space 1, as in the. conventional pillowcase, while the space H, between thefolded portion 3 and 50 the main body of the sheet is the full equivalent in comfort of the space between the lower face of a pillowcase and themain body of the sheet.

In Figs. 5 and 6 is shown a modification wherein the sheet is folded in the same manner as i1- lustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, at l2, l3 and i4 respectively, but the top edge of the sheet is not stitched to the fold l2, as in the first form of the invention described, but terminates short of the fold and is turned back upon itself and stitched to provide a reenforcement i5. In Fig. '7, a further modification is shown wherein the sheet is folded and stitched as at 22 and 25 to provide suitable reenforcements, these reenforoements being provided with eyelets or openings 26 through which is threaded a lacing 21 for holding the parts in pillowcase encircling position.

In Figs. 8 and 9 is shown a third modification wherein the top edge of the sheet is folded and stitched to form a reenforcement 3i, and then is folded, as shown at 32 and 33, and finally folded upon itself and stitched to form a second reenforcement 34. In the reenforcements 3i and 34 are provided buttonholes or other suitable openings 35 to receive pairs of buttons 36 joined to each other by cords similar to the cord l9. In this form of the invention, the lower buttons might be secured to the mattress, if desired, thereby preventing the misplacement or loss thereof and holding the device firmly in position.

While our preferred construction is shown in 1 Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, wherein the pillow is entirely enclosed, the other forms of the invention provide advantages such as the ease with which the pillow may be placed inv position. It is only necessary to place the sheet in position on the.

It is also to be noted that, while we have described our fastening means as consisting of buttons or lacings, it is within the purview of our invention to employ snap fasteners, zippers or other suitable forms of fastening means.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 7

1. A combined sheet and pillowcase comprising an upper pillowcase portion and a main sheet portion, the upper portion being folded back upon itself and secured transversely to the main portion, the distance between the line of securement and the upper edge being substantially that of the circumference of a pillow, and means for conmeeting the upper edge and the main portion adjacent the line of securement.

2. A combined sheet and pillowcase comprising, an upper pillowcase portion and a main sheet portion, the upper portion being folded back upon itself and secured transversely to the main por-: tion, the distance between the line of securement and the upper edge being substantially that of wherein the main portion is provided with a slit extending from a longitudinal edge thereof and of a length substantially that of the thickness of a mattress, said slit being in substantial alignment with the lower edge of the pillowcase portion whereby the sides of the pillowcase portion may be folded under the pillow.

4. A combined bed sheet and pillowcase, comprising a sheet of material, the upper portion of said sheet of material being folded back and secured to itself adjacent the line of fold, the upper edge of the sheet of material being connected to the main .body of the sheet adjacent the line of fold to form apillowcase, the line of fold being intermediate the upper and lower edges of the pillowcase, whereby the lower portion of the pillowcase may be spaced from the main body of the sheet.
