UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. HOWE, OF SYOAMORE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN DUST-PANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 22 L312, dated November 4, 1879; application filed September 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, GEO. H. HOWE, of Sycamore, in the county of De Kalb, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a dust-pan for household purposes of paper, the edges of which are suitably bound with metal for strengthening and the preventing of wear, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvention, Iwill proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
In the figure, A represents the body of the dust-pan, which is made in the form of those made of metal and in general use; but it is constructed of thick paper. The front edge as well as the side edges of the box are bound with metal. This metal binding consists of thin sheet metal, which is doubled over the edges and secured in any suitable manner.
This metal binding not only strengthens the pan, but makes it more durable, by preventing its edges from wear. (I d represent the sheetmetal binding.
The top 13 of the pan is re-enforced by astrap,
G, which is made either of paper, or metal, or
wood, or other cheap material.
The object of this construction is to form an article of manufacture which will be strong and durable and light, as also one which will be cheaper than the metal pans now in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A dust-pan the body of which is formed of paper, and the edges of which are bound or provided with sheet metal, as and for the pur pose set forth.
In testimony that,I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of March, 1878.
GEO. H. HOWE.
