N-PEI'ERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D O.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. LYNCH, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
.IMPROVEMENT IN BOC DK-MARKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,927, dated October 28, 1879; application filed September 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. haven, of Cleveland, in the county of 'Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Marks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to book-marks; and it consists in the combination, with a suitable clamp and swinging frame, of pendentdisks, strips, or slips of suitable material, all constructed, combined, and adapted to operate substantially in the manner hereinafter specified and claimed. 1
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents one form of many wherein my invention is susceptible of em bodiment. Fig. 2 represents the device shown in Fig. 1 as applied to a book, marking four places therein.
'In the said drawings, A is a clamp 5 B, a frame swinging by any suitable connection from the clamp A. O O are pendent strips or slips of metal, ivory, or any suitable material swinging from the frame BV The clamp A may be made of spring metal, or it may be made of rigid plates hinged together and operated by any suitable spring attachment to act as a clamp in substantially the manner indicated. This clamp is constructed in any suitable manner to grasp the back of the book-cover l), substantially in the manner shown at Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Instead of having serrated edges, as shown at A of the drawings, "these edges may be cushioned, or constructed in any manner to protect the book, while at the same time act-H ficient firmness to insure against accidental displacement. The frame B, having a swingin g attachment to'the frame A, adapts itself to any position that may be required, and the markingtablets G 0, being allowed a free movement along the bar B of the frame B, and also being allowed a free swinging movement thereon, can be adjusted between any leaves of the book.
I prefer constructing the frame B in such a manner that the marking-tablets 0 should not be likely to slip off from the bar B, and to ac complish this any twist or enlargement or stopping device B may be provided that shall act to retain the marking-tablet 0 upon the bar B.
I do not limit myself in any degree to the number or construction of the marking-tablets C. There may be one or more of them provided, and'they may be constructed from any material, or in any fashion desired.
My device may be found useful, not only in the reading of an ordinary book, where but one place is desired to be marked, but especiallyin cases where several references in a single book are to be made. For instance, in an Episcopal prayer-book, the Bible for use in church-service, law reports for attorneys in court-arguments, and like instances.
What I claim is- 1. In combination, with a suitable attaohin g device, the frame or holderB and one ormore marking-tablets, (J, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
2. In combination with the frame B, a m arking-tablet, (J, the stops B for retaining the marking-tablets upon the bar B, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
3. In combination with one or more marking-tablets, G, and the frame B, the clamping or attaching device A loosely attached to the frame B, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM J. LYNCH.
Witnesses WILLARD FRAOKER, EMMA WRIGHT.
