REAMER Filed Feb. 28, 1938 INVEN TOR STUART A.COG$D|LL ATTORNEYS Patented July 9, 1940 REALIER Stuart A. Cogsdill, Detroit, Mich., assignor to Cogsdill Twist Drill Company, Inc., Detroit, Mich, a corporation of Michigan Application February 28, 1938, Serial No. 193,155
2 Claims.
The invention relates to cutting tools and refers more particularly to expansion reamers.
The invention has for one of its objects to provide an expansion cutter in which the cutting blades may be readily adjusted. The invention has for other objects to provide an improved adjustment means and to so construct the adjustment means and the expansion cutter that the adjustment means cooperates with the radially movable parts of the expansion cutter to form in efiect a continuous annulus whereby force to which one part may be subjected is distributed to the other parts. The invention has for a further object to provide a simple construction of expansion cutter which may be manufactured at relatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the'novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a cutting tool showing an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of 26 Figure 1; I
Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 3--3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a portion of Figure 2; I
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the adjustment device.
As illustrated in the present instance, my invention is embodied in an expansion reamer in which I is the body having the shank 2 at one end and the expansible portion 3 at the other end. The expansible portion comprises the annular series of circumferentially separated flexible resilient longitudinal tongues 4 integral with the body and constituting parts adapted to be moved generally radially.
While the blades may be formed integral with the tongues, they are preferably formed separately and of high speed steel, while the body is preferably formed of nickel steel. Each of the tongues 4 is preferably provided with the pair of generally longitudinally extending slots 5 which are symmetrically disposed with respect to the longitudinal median plane of the tongue. 6 are the blades engageable in the slots.
5 the blades is preferably provided with the plurality of recesses or notches 9 in its side terminating in the cutting edge, which recesses are filled by integral portions of the tongues, whereby the blades are permanently secured to the 55 tongues. In forming the reamer, the slots 5 are Each of cut in an end-portion of the body I and the blades 6 are formed with the recesses or notches 9 in their sides. These recesses or notches may be formed as shown, or have other shapes, or may be provided by a knurling operation. After the 6 blades have been inserted into the slots, the portions of the body adjacent the sides of the blades having the recesses or notches are subjected to a forging operation which displaces the body to provide the portions extending into and filling the 10' recesses or notches. Then the body is longitudinally severed or slit to form the tongues 4.
For the purpose of expanding the reamer, I have provided the expanding device It] which is adapted to exert a circumferential force upon the 15 tongues to move the blades generally radially. This adjustment device comprises the screw II which extends axially of the body and has the shank l2 which clears the tongues 4 and threadedly engages the portion of the shank 2 in the 20 zone adjacent the expansible portion 3. This screw is provided with the head I3 which preferably flares outwardly from the shank. I4 is a wedge member rotatably mounted upon the screw II and held from disengagement therefrom 5 by the head l3 and suitable means, such as the pin l5, extending transversely through the shank 12. The wedge member l4 has the hub portion or collar I6 of an external diameter such that it may be inserted within the bore formed by the 30 able tool by means of which the screw may be threaded into the body to thereby move the wedge member axially inwardly to expand the ex- 45 pansible portion of the reamer.
The construction is such that the wedge member through its wedge elements is adapted to exert a circumferential force upon the tongues to move these tongues away from each other to thereby move the blades carried by the tongues generally radially outwardly. The wedge elements being located between the tongues cooperate with these tongues to form a continuous annulus so that force to which one tongue is subjected through its blade is distributed to the other tongues. As a result, the adjustment device functions to provide a reinforced rigid construction of expansible reamer when in use whereby the blades are efiectively held in their various positions of adjustment from vibrating.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a cutting tool, a body having an annular series of resilient longitudinal tongues, blades upon said tongues, a collar having wedge elements adapted to extend between and engage adjacent tongues, and a threaded member engaging said collar and adjustable to adjust said collar axially of said body.
