Description

2 Sheets-Sheet 2.
J. FORSYTH.
Churn.
No. 22,022. Patented Nov. 9, 1858.
UNITED STATES AENT OFFICE.
JOS. FORSYTH, OF YVIIEELING, VIRGINIA.
OPERATING CHURNS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,022, dated November 9, 18 58.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josrrrr FORsY'rH, of the city of Wheeling, county of Ohio, and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Machinery for Operating Churns by Power; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a front view and Fig. 8 is an end section of the carriage.
The nature of my invention consists, first, in combining the carriage D with the movable pulley head H H in such a manner that the said carriage will move with the head when it is required to stop or start the motion of the churn, thereby enabling me to keep the shafts of the pulley, and churn in line.
The second feature of my invention consists in the movable platform K, which can be raised or lowered in order to bring the shafts of difierent sized churns in line with the pulley shaft.
The motive power consists in the wheel A, C, suspended by the shaft M, on the posts, B, B, said posts being secured to the floor or ground. The guide block U, is fastened to the floor in such a manner that the sides of said block will be parallel to the motion of the wheel.
The pulley head is composed of the upright metallic frames H H, secured to a block, the ends of said frames passing down on the sides of the guide block steadies the head and causes it to move parallel to the sides of said guide block. The strap F which passes over the head block and is fastened to the guide block has a thumb screw E in the center by which I secure the head block and hold it in position.
The carriage is composed of the side bars D, one end of which is secured'to the head block; the other end of said bars is secured together by a suitable cross tie, it having a roller in the center as shown by Fig. 3. Said roller resting on the floor supports the outer end of the carriage. As the head block is moved back or forward to stop or start the motion of the pulleys the carriage moves with it.
The platform K on which the churn rests is secured to the carriage by the screws I I I I one end of which passes into and is secured to the sides of the carriage. A movable nut on each screw supports the platform; the screws passing through it has a second nut which is brought down on the top of said platform, securing it in position. The platform'is moved by raising or lowering the nuts as required. The churn is then placed on the platform so that the handle V, will lock with the arm X, on the pulley shaft.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the carriage D with the movable platform K substantially' as described and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH FORSYTH.
