IMPROVEMENT IN SECTIONAL BOOK-CASES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220.163, dated September 30, 1879; application filed" July 21, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MARBLE, of Wilmington, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Sectional Book-Oase, of which the following is a specification.

Fignre 1 is a front view of my improved book-case, partly in section, and part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line w m, Fig. 1. Fig. -3 is a detail perspective View of one of the sections.

The object of this invention is to furnish book-cases made in sections, and so constructed that the sections may be taken apart for convenience in moving and again put together without removing the books from their places, and which shall be simple in construction and firm and stable when set up.

' The invention consists in the sections formed of the two bottom bars having a space between them, the two sides, and the top bar, in combination with each other and with the base and the top or cap, as hereinafter fully described.

A represents the base of the book-case, whichmay be made with or without drawers, as may be desired. To the middle part of the top of the base Ais attached a bar, B, which fits into the space or slot between the two bars 0, the three bars 0 B O forminga shelf to receive books. The ends of the two bars 0 are firmly attached to the lower ends of the short sides D. To the upper ends of the sides D are attached the ends of another middle.

so on until the desired number of sections have been used, each section consisting of two bottom bars, 0, two sides, D, and a top bar, B, as shown in Fig. 3.

The top bar, B, of the upper section fits into the space or slot between two bars, 0, attached to the top or cap E of the book-case.

The front or cornice of the top or cap E projects, and to the forward part of the sides of the said cap or top, just in the rear of the front or cornice, is pivoted a spring-roller, F, similar to the roller of a window-shade, and which is provided with a shade or curtain, G, which may be drawn down in front of the sections when desired to protect the books from dust, the said curtain Gr moving down and up through a slot or space in the rear of the front or cornice of the cap E.

If desired, the spring-roller and curtain F G may be omitted, and doors H may be used; but in this case the hinges must be so formed that the doors may be readily lifted off to allow the sections to be detached.

The lower ends of the sides D should be rabbeted or dovetailed to receive the ends of the bars 0 B 0, so that the said ends may not show at the sides of the book-case.

The bars B O of the sections may be locked together, if desired, by buttons or other suitable fastenin gs.

The various sections are provided with backs I, in the usual way.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The sections formed of the two bottom bars, 0, having a space between them, the two sides D, and the top bar, B, in combination with each other and with the base A and the top or cap E, substantially as herein shown and described.
