This invention relates to a pinking attachment for sewing machines and an object of this invention is to provide a pinking attachment positioned 'under the base of the sewing machine and which will simultaneously pink and sew fabric sections to produce a pinked and topstitched seam with superposed edge portions facing in one direction.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pinking attachment which may be rigidly attached below the sewing machine base and having a movable V-shaped male cutter pivotally sustained at one end of a longitudinally disposed lever pivotally mounted below the sewing machine base, and which is actuated in a manner as to leave the upper surface of the sewing machine base clear for operating purposes.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pinking attachment having a V-shaped female cutter mounted in angular relation with the cloth plate of the sewing machine and having an actuating lever for the male cutter mounted wholly below the base plate of the sewing machine and comprising a male cutter carrier in the rear of the hook-driving shaft, the cutter carrier having its lower end pivotally sustained at one end of the lever, and the base plate having an opening to permit the male cutter carrier and. a V-shaped male cutter to pass upwardly above the base plate with the male cutter in cutting engagement with the female cutter on the upward stroke.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pinking attachment for sewing machines, the said attachment having V-shaped cutting members positioned on the left side of the needle.
Another object of this invention is to relieve or undercut the lower face of the female cutter on the side facing the operator so as to permit the folder tongue to enter thereunder and to permit the top surface of the female cutting member to come closer to the base of the sewing machine and the fabric worked upon to slide more readily over the top surface of the female cutter without flopping around. This application is a continuation in part of my application ,Serial No. 243,902, filed December 5, 1938 which has now been abandoned.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and. arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims which form part of this specification.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 8 indicates a sewing machine comprising a baseplate 9, an overhanging arm I0 and a head II. A main shaft 12 has been mounted in the overhanging arm Ill and imparts vertical reciprocating movements to a needle-bar l3 carrying a needle I4 which is given a complete reciprocation for each rotation of the shaft l2.
A cloth plate I5, having a needle opening and feed slots for a feed dog I6, is secured to the base-plate 9. The needle is timed to cooperate with a looptaker I! for forming stitches. A presser-foot bar l8, carrying a presser-foot I9 is yieldably supported in the head II.
My pinking attachment, indicated by the numeral 20, comprises a base 2| having a bifurcated lower extension 22 designed to receive a lever 23. The lever is pivotally mounted on a bearing pin 24 in the bifurcated extension. The lever 23 has a bifurcated front end forming two arms 26, 26, for a carrier 21 pivotally mounted on a pin 28 passing through the arms.
Fastened, by means of a bolt 30, to the cutter carrier 21 is a male cutting member 32 of triangular cross-section. Fastened to the upper surface of the base 2| is a female cutting member 33 having therein a V-shaped opening 34. The cutting member 33 has downwardly extending guide members 35, The guide members 35, 35' have the same inclination as the sides of the V-shaped opening 34 and form continuations thereof. The guide members 35, 35 are positioned in spaced relation from the apex of the opening 34 and extend downwardly a sufficient distance to be constantly in engagement with the rear portions of the cutting walls of the male cutting member 32, and function to maintain the male and female cutting members in alinement under all operating condtions.
A leaf spring 36 has been fastened to the lever 23 by a screw 31. The leaf spring 36 extends angularly against the male cutter carrier 21 serving to force the male cutter outwardly about the pin 23 into engagement with the female cutting member 33. The leaf spring 36 exerts a pressure against the male cutting member andpresses the cutting edges of the male and female cutting members into engagement for cutting superposed layers of fabric.
Figure 1 shows my pinking attachment 29 mounted below the base-plate 9 of the sewing machine 8 with the pinking attachment base 2| rigidly attached to the lower surface of the baseplate 9 by means of bolts 40 passing through apertures 4| in the base 2|. A carrier 42 for the female cutter 33 has been slidably mounted' in a guideway 43 in the upper surface of the base 2|. A bolt 44 threaded in the carrier 42 passes through an elongated aperture 45 in the base 2|. By partially unscrewing the bolt 44 it is possible to move the carrier 42 and the female cutter 33 so as to vary the distance between the line of stitching formed by the needle M and the pinked edge of the fabric made by the pinking members 32 and 33. Figure 2 shows that the pinking members 32 and 33 are always disposed to cut in a plane transverse to the line of stitching.
The lever 23 is pivotally joined by a pin 46 to a link 41. The upper end of the link 41 has been mounted on a bearing pin 48 at the rear end of a transverse shaft 49. The actuating mechanism causing the lever 23 of the pinking attachment 2!) to swing about the bearing pin 24 comprises the main shaft I2 of the sewing machine and a worm 50 fixed thereon. The worm 50 is in engagement with a worm gear 5| carried by the transverse shaft 49.
The shaft 49 is geared to rotate at a lesser number of revolutions than the shaft l2. The shaft 49 has an eccentric portion which forms the bearing pin 48, on which the upper end of the link 41 is mounted. It will be noted that due to the link 41 being in engagement with the pivotally mounted lever 23, the lever will swing up and down about the bearing pin 24, solely due to the motion of the shaft l2, and during operation of the sewing machine, the pinking members will come into cutting engagement a lesser number of times than the number of stitches formed by the needle I4.
The link 41 has a left hand thread at its upper end and a right hand thread at its lower end. The oppositely directed threads make it possible, by rotating the link 41, to lengthen or shorten the distance between the centers of the bearing pin 48 and the pin 46. By means of this adjustment the male cutting member 32 may be raised or lowered and adjusted after being ground for wear.
I have provided a plate 52 which is mounted in spaced relation below the female cutting member 33. The plate 52 has an inclined wall 53 in alinement with the inclined front side of the V-shaped opening 34. The plate 52 is fastened to the base-plate 9 and serves to support and strip the fabric worked upon from the male cutting member 32.
Figure 5 shows an edge-folded and topstitched seam comprising two sections of fabric 56 and 51 seamed together with a single row of topstitching 58 and having a pinked edge 59. The top section of fabric 51 has its edge folded and the two sections 56 and 51 are fed to the needle and to the pinking mechanism through a suitable folder indicated by the numeral 60, shown in Figures 6 and 7.
The folder 68 includes an attaching plate 6| which is adjustably secured to the base-plate 9 by means of screws 62. The attaching plate 6| has an integral upwardly extending hollow portion 63 which terminates adjacent the needle M in a rolled edge forming the inside folding plate 64 of the folder 60.
An outside folding plate 65 is secured to the undersurface of the portion 63 such as by soldering. The plate 65 is bent upwardly in curved and spaced relation from the inside folding plate 64 and forms a scroll-shaped passage through which the upper layer of fabric passes and is downfolded.
Extending substantially in line with the rolled edge 66 of the inside folding plate 64 is a folder tongue 61 which forms part of the portion 63.
The folding plates 64 and 65 converge as they approach the needle I4. The folder tongue 61 extends under the presser-foot l9 which is undercut at 69 to permit the tongue to come close to the needle.
As the two sections of fabric leave the rear of the folder they pass between the presserfoot I9 and the cloth plate l5 to be stitched together and pinked, the section 51 sliding over the top surface of the hollow portion or cover plate 63 mounted above the base-plate 9. The top surface of cover plate 63 extends above the male cutting member 32 and shields the fabric section 51 from being dragged under the male cutting member and damaged.
The needle I4 passes through the double thickness of the section 51 and through the single thickness of the section 56, stitching the two sections together and the folded edges of the stitched sections pass between the cutting members 32 and 33 and. produce the pinked, edgefolded and topstitched seam shown in Figure 5 in a single operation.
As best shown in Figures 1 and 7, the cutter carrier 21 is positioned rearward of the hook driving shaft of the sewing machine and the cutter carrier is positioned in spaced relation from the hook or from the looptaker H a distance sufiicient to permit removal of the bobbin case.
As shown in Figure 6, the cutting members 32 and 33 are positioned on the left side of the needle |4. As shown in Figure 3, the female cutter 33 has its cutting edges in its lower surface and the cutters are designed to come into cutting engagement on the upward stroke.
Figures 8 to 10 show a modified female cutter 33' wherein the cutting end 16 has been undercut at a portion 1| facing the operator to permit the folder tongue 61 (Figure 6) to enter thereunder in closer relation to the top surface of the cutter 33'. The entering and exit edges of the cutter 33' have been slightly bevelled atthe portions l2, 13 to facilitate passage of the fabric thereover.
As shown in Figures 9 and 10, the front portion 12 has been tapered to a sharp edge and the rear portion has been rounded.
I claim:
1. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a'hook-driving shaft mounted below said base, a rotating hook carrying a bobbin case, a cutter carrier positioned rearward of said hook-driving shaft, a pinking attachment mounted below said sewing machine base and having a pivotal support integral therewith and extending downwardly, a lever mounted in said pivotal support below said base, said cutter carrier being pivoted at one end of said lever and being positioned in spaced relation from said hook a distance suflicient to permit removal of said bobbin case, said cutter carrier being reciprocable in a generally vertical direction, and means actuated by the sewing machine driving means for actuating the other end of said lever.
2. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a hook-driving shaft mounted below said base, a rotating hook carrying a bobbin case, a pinking attachment mounted below said sewing machine base and having a pivotal support integral therewith and extending downwardly, a lever mounted in said pivotal support below said base, a cutter carrier positioned rearward of said hook-driving shaft and carrying a male pinking cutter with V- shaped cutting edges, said cutter carrier being pivoted at one end of said lever and being positioned in spaced relation from said hook a distance sufiicient to permit removal of said bobbin case, said cutter carrier being reciprocable in a generally vertical direction, a cloth plate, a V- shaped female cutter mounted in angular relation with said cloth plate, said cutters being designed to come into cutting engagement on the upward stroke, and means actuated by the sewing machine driving means for actuating the other end of said lever.
3. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a hook-driving shaft mounted below said base, a rotating hook carrying a bobbin case, a pinking attachment mounted below said sewing machine base and having a pivotal support integral therewith and extending downwardly, a lever mounted in said pivotal support below said base, a cutter carrier positioned rearward of said hook-driving shaft and carrying a male pinking cutter with V-shaped cutting edges, said cutter carrier being pivoted at one end of said lever and being positioned in spaced relation from said hook a distance sufiicient to permit removal of said bobbin case, a cloth plate, a V-shaped female cutter mounted in angular relation with said cloth plate. said female cutter having its cutting edges in its lower surface to permit said male cutter to come into cutting engagement therewith on the upward stroke, and means actuated by the sewing machine driving means for actuating the other end of said lever.
4. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a hook-driving shaft mounted below said base, a rotating hook carrying a bobbin case, a pinking attachment mounted below said sewing machine base and having a pivotal support integral therewith and extending downwardly, a lever mounted in said pivotal support below said base, a cutter carrier positioned rearward of said hook-driving shaft and carrying a male pinking cutter with V-shaped cutting edges, said cutter carrier being pivoted at one end of said lever for up and down motion and being positioned in spaced relation from said hook a distance sufiicient to permit removal of said bobbin case, a cloth plate, a V-shaped female cutter mounted in angular relation with said cloth plate, said male cutter being designed to cut on the upward stroke, said female cutter having its cutting edges in its lower surface to permit said male cutter to come into cutting engagement therewith on the upward stroke, and means actuated by the sewing machine driving means for actuating the other end of said lever.
5. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a hook-driving shaft mounted below said base and carrying a rotating hook and a bobbin case, a cloth plate, a pinking attachment mounted below said sewing machine base and having a pivotal support integral therewith, a lever mounted in said pivotal support, a cutter carrier carrying a male pinking cutter with V-shaped cutting edges, said cutter carrier being pivoted at one end of said lever for up and down motion and being positioned in spaced relation from said hook a distance sufficient to permit removal of said bobbin case, a V- shaped female cutter mounted in angular relation with said cloth plate, said male cutter being designed to cut on the upward stroke, said female cutter having its cutting edges in its lower surface to permit said male cutter to come into cutting engagement therewith on the upward stroke, and means actuated by the sewing machine driving means for actuating the other end of said lever.
6. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a shaft mounted below said base and carrying a rotating hook and a bobbin case, a cloth plate, a needle, a pinking attachment mounted below said sewing machine base and having a pivotal support integral therewith, a lever pivotally mounted in said support, a cutter carrier having a male pinking cutter with V-shaped cutting edges secured thereto, said cutter carrier being pivoted at one end of said lever for up and down motion and being positioned in spaced relation from said hook a distance sufficient to permit removal of said bobbin case, a female cutter having a V-shaped opening mounted in angular relation with said cloth plate, said male cutter being designed to cut on the upward stroke, said female cutter having its cutting edges in its lower surface to permit said male cutter to come into cutting engagement therewith on the upward stroke, said cutting members being positioned on the left side of the needle, and means actuated by the sewing machine driving means for actuating the other end of said lever.

In a combined seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a shaft mounted below said base and carrying a rotating hook and a bobbin case, a cloth plate, a needle, a pinking attachment mounted below said sewing machine base and having a male pinking cutter with V- shaped cutting edges pivotally mounted therein for up and down motion, a female cutter having a V-shaped opening and having at least a portion thereof above said cloth plate, said male cutter being designed to cut on the upward stroke, said female cutter having its cutting edges in its lower surface to permit said male cutter to come into cutting engagement therewith on the upward stroke, said cutting members being positioned on the left side of said needle, and means actuated by the sewing machine driving means for actuating said male cutter.
8. In a combined seaming and pinking machine, a Work supporting base, a shaft mounted below said base and carrying a rotating hook and a bobbin case, a cloth plate, a needle,'a pinking attachment mounted below said sewing machine base and having a male pinking cutter with V- shaped cutting edges pivotally mounted therein for up and down motion, a female cutter having a V-shaped opening and having at least a portion thereof above said cloth plate, said male cutter being designed to cut on the upward stroke, said female cutter having its cutting edges in its lower surface to permit said male cutter to come into cutting engagement therewith on the upward stroke, said cutting members being positioned on the left side of said needle, a folder having a tongue and being positioned in front of said needle, the cutting end of the female cutter facing the operator being undercut to permit said folder tongue to enter thereunder in close relation to the top surface thereof, and means actuated by the sewing machine drivlng means for actuating said male cutter.
9. In a combined topstitch seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a hookdriving shaft mounted below said base, a rotating hook carrying a bobbin case, a cutter carrier positioned rearward of said hook-driving shaft and to the left of the needle, a pinking attachment secured to said sewing machine base and having a pivotal support integral therewith and extending downwardly, a lever mounted in said pivotal support below said base, said cutter carrier being pivoted at one end of said lever and being positioned in spaced relation from said hook a distance sufficient to permit removal of said bobbin case, said cutter carrier being reciprocable in a generally vertical direction, and means actuated by the sewing machine driving means for actuating the other end of said lever.
10. In a combined topstitch seaming and pinkin machine, a work supporting base, a horizontal hook shaft mounted below said base, a rotating hook carrying a bobbin case, a pinking attachment secured to said sewing machine base and having a pivotal support integral therewith and extending downwardly, a lever mounted in said pivotal support below said base, a cutter carrier positioned rearward of said hook shaft and carrying a male pinking cutter with V- shaped cutting edges, said cutter carrier being pivoted at one end of said lever and being positioned in spaced relation from said hook a distance sufiicient to permit removal of said bobbin case, said cutter carrier being reciprocable in a generally vertical direction, a cloth plate, a V- shaped female cutter mounted in angular relation with said cloth plate, said cutters being designed to come into cutting engagement on the upward stroke, and means actuated by the sewing machine driving means for actuating the other end of said lever.
11. In a combined topstitch seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a horizontal hook shaft mounted below said base, a rotating hook carrying a bobbin case, a pinking attachment secured to said sewing machine base and having a pivotal support extending downwardly, a lever mounted in said pivotal support below said base, a cutter carrier positioned rearward of said hook-driving shaft and carrying a male pinking cutter with V-shaped cutting edges, said cutter carrier being pivoted at one end of said lever for up and down motion and being positioned in spaced relation from said hook a distance suflicient to permit removal of said bobbin case, a cloth plate, a V-shaped female cutter mounted in angular relation with said cloth plate, said male cutter being designed to cut on the upward stroke, said female cutter having its cutting edges in its lower surface to permit said male cutter to come into cutting engagement therewith on the upward stroke, and means actuated by the sewing machine driving means for actuating the other end of said lever.
12. In a combined topstitch seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a horizontal shaft mounted below said base and carrying a rotating hook and a bobbin case, a cloth plate, a needle, a pinking attachment secured to said sewin machine base and having a pivotal support integral therewith, a lever pivotally mounted in said support, a cutter carrier having a male pinkin cutter with V-shaped cutting edges secured thereto, said cutter carrier being pivoted at one end of said lever for up and down motion and being positioned in spaced relation from said hook a distance sumcient to permit removal of said bobbin case, a female cutter having a V-shaped opening and being mounted in angular relation with said cloth plate, said male cutter being designed to cut on the upward stroke, said female cutter having its cutting edges in its lower surface to permit said male cutter to come into cuttin engagement therewith on the upward stroke, said cutting members being positioned on the left side of the needle, and means actuated by the sewing machine main shaft for actuating the other end of said lever.
13. In a combined topstitch seaming and pinking machine, a work supporting base, a horizontal shaft mounted below said base and carrying a rotating hook and a bobbin case, a cloth plate, a needle, a pinking attachment secured to said sewing machine base and having a male pinking cutter with V-shaped cutting edges pivotally mounted therein for up and down motion, a female cutter having a V-shaped opening and having at least a portion thereof above said cloth plate, said male cutter being designed to cut on the upward stroke, said female cutter having its cutting edges in its lower surface to permit said male cutter to come into cutting engagement therewith on the upward stroke, said cutting members being positioned on the left side of said needle, a folder having a tongue and being positioned in front of said needle, the cutting end of the female cutter facing the operator being undercut to permit said folder tongue to enter thereunder in close relation to the top surface thereof, and means actuated by the sewing machine main shaft for actuating said male cutter.
