This invention relates to an improved shield for protecting the face and neck from hot air while drying the hair with a hot air dryer.

More particularly, it is an aim of this invention to provide a shield having a U-shaped or horseshoe shaped brim which is relatively wide and substantially rigid for engaging around the face, adjacent the hairline and below the ears, an apron for covering the neck, and a head harness secured to the brim and adapted to be disposed on the head for supporting the shield.

Still another aim of the invention is to provide a shield having ear flaps forming a part of the head harness for protecting the ears and means, including a slide, forming a part of the head harness whereby the head harness may be adjusted to fit heads of different sizes.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the shield applied,

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along the plane of the line 3-3 of Figure 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawing,

wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, Ill designates generally the shield which is particularly adapted for use in beauty parlors for protecting the face, neck and ears of patrons while the hair is being dried by means of a hot air dryer in a manner, as illustrated in Figure 1. The shield Ill includes generally a brim II, an apron I2 and head harness l3.

The brim II, as best seen in the bottom plan view, Figure 2, is U-shaped or horseshoe shaped and is relatively wide and tapering towards its ends. The brim may be formed of any suitable fabric, oil silk, or other suitable material, preferably a material capable of being washed or otherwise maintained in a sanitary condition. As illustrated, the brim II is preferably formed of oil silk and includes outer plies I4 of said material and an inner ply I5 of a relatively rigid fabric for maintaining the shape and rigidity of the brim II'. The plies I4 and I5 are connected along their edges by means of the binding I6 and secured thereto by stitching, as seen at I1. The apron I2 is preferably formed of a single thickness of a light material, such as oil silk which is also provided with a binding I6, which is stitched at IT. The apron I2 is provided with one or more pleats I8 to form its outer edge of substantially greater width than its inner edge. One end of the apron I2, adjacent the inner edge thereof, is secured to the end I9 of the brim II by stitchings IT. The inner edge, adjacent the opposite end of the apron I2, is provided on its under side with a portion of a snap fastening 20 for detachably and selectively engaging any one of the complementary portions of snap fastenings 2I', connected to the upper side of the inner edge of the brim II, adjacent its opposite end. A portion of the binding I6 to which the fastener portion 20 is attached is preferably reinforced by means of an inner ply of fabric, not shown, to prevent the fastening portion 20 from tearing the binding of the apron I2. Other fastenings may be used instead of the fastenings 20 and 2|.

The head harness I3 includes the correspondingly disposed tapes 22 which are connected at their ends beneath the binding I6 to the plies I4 and [5, at spaced points adjacent the ends and inner edge of the brim. The head harness I3 also includes the overlapping loops 23 comprising tapes fastened at their ends beneath the binding to the plies I4 and I5 at the intermediate portion of the inner edge of the brim I I. The tapes 22 and loops 23 are attached to the underside of brim II. Ear flaps 24, formed of one or more plies, preferably of the same material as the apron I2, and provided with a binding I6, are looped around and thereby loosely connected to the free, intermediate portions of the tapes 22, as best seen in Figure 3, to thereby pivotally mount the ear flaps 24 relatively to the brim II. A strap 25 is connected intermediate of its ends to the loop 23 andhas its ends fastened to the free ends of the ear flaps 24. A slide 26 is mounted on the strap 25 for drawing the end portions thereof together.

The shield I0 is applied by detaching the end of the apron I2, having the fastening portion 20, from the brim I I and positioning the brim II with its inner edge disposed adjacent the hairline and beneath the ears. Fastener portion 20 is then attached to one of the fastener portions 2| so that the brim and apron will fit snugly around the head. The ear flaps 24 are then adjusted relatively to the brim I I by sliding them relatively to the tapes 22 until they are positioned over the ears, in the manner as seen in Figure 1. The slide 26 is then adjusted relatively to the strap 25 to tighten the head harness I3 so that the shield will be retained in applied position. For small heads the slide 26 is moved to a point closer to the ends of the strap 25, than for larger heads. The shield l0, thus applied, as seen in Figure 1, is ready for use with the brim I I thereof extending downwardly and outwardly relatively to the forehead for protecting the face from the hot air from a dryer, the hood portion of which is shown, in dotted lines, at 21 in position over the upper portion of the head. The brim II will act as a baflle for directing the air outwardly from the face and the apron l2 will shield the neck from hot air. The apron l2 and the ear flaps 24 may be formed of a different material than the brim ll, if desired.

Various modifications and changes are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to as only a preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed.

I claim as my invention:

1. A shield for use with hair dryers, comprising an elongated longitudinally curved member forming a brim and provided with an inner longitudinally curved edge for engaging around the forehead and under the ears, the ends of the brim being adapted to extend to adjacent the back of the neck, said brim being relatively rigid and substantially fiat in cross section and being arranged to project downwardly and outwardly relatively to the face, and means for engaging the crown of the head and attached to the brim for retaining the brim in its applied position, said means comprising a head harness including flaps projecting upwardly from the inner edge of the brim for engaging over the ears.

A face shield for use with hair dryers comprising a relatively wide substantially U-shaped brim adapted to fit around the forehead and having its ends extending to adjacent the b ack of. the neck, an apron connecting the ends of said brim and adapted to be disposed against the back of the neck, a head harness attached to the inner edge of the brim, adjacent the intermediate portion and the ends thereof for engaging the crown of the head to support the brimon the face and the apron at the back of the neck, and flaps, forming a part of. said harness, and disposed adjacent to the ends of the inner edge of the brim for covering the ears when the shield is in position.

3. A face shield for use with hair dryers comprising a relatively wide substantially U-shaped brim adapted to fit around the forehead and having its ends extending to adjacent the back of the neck, an apron connecting the ends of said brim and adapted to be disposed against the back of the neck, a head harness attached to the inner edge of the brim, adjacent the intermediate porticn and the ends thereof for engaging the crown of the head to support the brim on the face and the apron at the back of the neck, said head harness including tapes secured at their ends to the intermediate portion of the inner edge of the brim forming loops, tapes secured at their ends to the end portions of the inner edge of the brim and forming loops, ear flaps loosely attached to said last mentioned loops for covering the ears, and a strap connected at its ends to the free ends of said ear flaps and having its intermediate portion looped through said first mentioned loops.

4. A face shield for use with hair dryers comprising a relatively wide horseshoe shaped brim portion adapted to be disposed around the upper portion of the face and having its ends extending to adjacent the back of the neck, an apron fastened to one end of the brim portion and detachably connected to the opposite end thereof and adapted to lie against the back of the neck, and a head harness fastened to the inner edge of the brim for engaging the crown of the head for supporting the brim and apron, said head harness including ear flaps pivotally mounted relatively to the end portions of the inner edge of.

the brim for covering the ears, a crown piece comprising a strap connected at its ends to the flaps and at its intermediate portion to the intermediate portion of the inner edge of the brim, for engaging the crown of the head, and a slide mounted thereon for drawing the ends of said strap together.
