The present invention relates to a patchaffixing device for tabulating cards.
t At the present time punched'tabulating cards are Widelyv used for assembling, tabulating and analyzing data in conjunction With specially designed machines. punched therein at appropriate places, through which electrical contacts are established by suitablemechanism.
In the past it has beenV the practice to repair cards of this sort, when a hole is punched therein at the wrong place,v by adhering a small patch of thin paper to thel rear of the card. The aiX- ing, of a small patch tothe rear of an improperly punched hole hasV been Very troublesome for a number of reasons. In the first place, it was necessary to use a small patch cut to the dimension desired, which* Was in itself difficult to handle: In the second place, these patches, which were adhesive coated, had to. be moistened before being afxed. Ordinarily thev operator held the patch to be aiiXed by one corner during the moistening operation, andv therefore one corner of the patch Was not moistened and Would not become adhered. Finally, where a number of holes had been punched in the card, it was difficult to recognize the improperly punched hole from the rear, and in some cases the patch was improperly affixed to a correctly punched hole, leaving the incorrectly punched hole unpatched.
The presentl device overcomes all of these di-iiculties in a simple and eicient mannen, and provides mechanism for rapidly and accurately applying an adhesive coated patch to the rear of an improperly punched hole in cards of the character described.
Briefly described,` the present deviceY comprises spaced aligned locator and applicator means adapted to receive a card therebetween, with the rear of the card adjacent the applicator and the face of the card adapted to cooperate with the locator. The locator conveniently takes the form of a transparent View plate provided with indexing means, such for example as cross hairs. The applicator, in the preferred form of my invention illustrated herein, takes the form of an apertured die plate in combination With a relatively movable plunger. A continuous strip of adhesive coated material is received between the apertured die and the plunger in positionV to have a small patch out therefrom when the plunger moves relative to the die. This patch is carried by the plunger into engagement with the rear surface 'of the card and is adhesively attached thereto.
Conveniently the rear surface of the card is moistened before the operation.
Means automatically operable by the cutting and applying operation are provided for advancing the adhesive material in step by step relation, and other means are provided for preventing Thesecards have holesV feeding of the tape except when the` punch and apertured die plate are separated.
Withthey foregoing general description in mind, it isY an object of the presentinvention to provide a device of the character described, characterized by cooperating spaced,l aligned locator and applicator means;

As seen in Figure 1, the card l0 has printed matter thereon, as indicated, and is adapted tohave holes or openings Il punched thereinV by a suitable machine. In this figure I have indicated atY i2 certain holes which have been erroneously punched and.l to which repairpatches are to be affixed at the rear surface of the card. These patches are shown at I3 in Figures 2 and 3, and preferably aresmall, round patches of adhesive coated thin paper. Such paper is commercially available in roll, form. The purpose of the paper is to prevent electrical contact beingV established through improperly punched holes` by mechanism` normaly employed with these cards.
By comparing Figures 1 and 2, it willbe observed that an improperlyA punched hole I2 may line line
elevation of The device which I have developed for the purpose of cutting and applying patchesto the rearof improperly punched holes is seen in Figures 4 to. 11,` inclusive. This device comprisesy aF base which may be. arelatively sturdycasting, o r may bfe otherwise formedas desired. The base 20 carriesasmovable frame portion 2|,N whichin the embodiment illustrated takes the form of a lever pivoted to the base, as indicated at 22. The frame or lever 2| is provided with *a deep groove 23, opening at the free, end of the lever 2| and providingspace for the reception of a tabulating card. In order that the device may be employed to repair an improperly punched hole at any point in the card, it will be appreciated that the depth of the groove 23 will be sufficient to receive at least half and preferably the entire width of a tabulating card therein. The leverv2|` overly ing the groove 23 has an opening 24V therein for the reception of a view plate 25, which is shown as retained in assembled position against av thin seating flange 26 by means of a bezel 2 1, illus.- trated as threaded into the opening 24. As best seen in Figure 4, the view plate may con veniently be provided with cross hairs or marks 28 for accurate centering of the improperly punched holetherebeneath. ,f
The free end of the lever 2 I, beneath the groove 23 and in alignment with view plate 25, is provided with a removable apertured die 30, shown as detachably secured thereto as by means of screws 3| or the like. The die 30 is provided with an opening 32 which is of the size to which the patches are to be cut.
The free end of the lever 2| is provided with a depending apertured boss 33 which receives a cutting and applying plunger element 34 in accurately guided relation. Theplunger 34 isac' curately aligned with the opening 32 in the die plate 30, and is adapted to cooperate therewith to cutv a small disc of adhesive coated materialand to move upward relative thereto in a manner to press the cut patch against the lower surface of a tabulating card. Y
The base 20 is provided with a web 35 to-which is secured a ledge 36 upon which the lower end of the plunger 34 is adapted to rest. Intermediate the apertured boss. 33'and head V31 of the plunger 34 is a compression spring 38. The spring 38 tends to rock the lever 2| upwardly or in a clockwise direction, as seen in Figure 6. `The head 31 of the plunger 34 rests loosely on the ledge `36', since an arcuate motion is imparted thereto'by rocking of the'lever 2|'about its vpivot axisv 22. It is necessary for the plunger 31 to be retained-in accurately VYguided registry with.the opening 32 of the die plate'30. Y
Therdie plate is provided with a transverse slot-,.40 forY the receptionof a continuous strip 4| of adhesive coated material which is adapted to be fed ,therethroughby mechanism laterto be described. Y Y Y Adjacentthefront of the base 20 I provide anopening 42 for the reception of a well 43 adapted to containa sponge 44. The well 43 is filled withAwater and the sponge 44 extends slightly above the upper surface ofthe well43. Whenva cardis to be repaired, the area adjacent the improperly Ypunched hole is moistened by contacting the same with the upwardly project- Vcoated material which remains on the upper flat end of the plunger 34. Since the rear or lower surface of the card is moistened, the pressure thusdeveloped aflixes the patch to the rear of the improperly punched hole. The hole to be repaired serves as located indicia visible from the upper side of the card and is, of course, centered beneath cross hairs 28 of the view plate 25, and thefcross hairs are in aligned relation with the plunger 34 so that the patch is aiiixed in accurately centered relation with respect to the hole, as viewed andidentied from the front or upper side of the card. Y
Means are provided for automatically advancing thestrip material 4| in a step by step manner. It will be appreciated, however, that this step by step advance of the strip material 4| must be timed to take place after the lever 2| has moved upwardly on its idle stroke a distance suflicient to withdraw the plunger from the die plate 30, as otherwise the strip 4| would be torn. The means for accomplishing this function are best seen in Figures 6, and 8 to 11, inclusive.
TheV strip 4| is supplied on a spool 50 which is held between centers 5|`and 52, the center 52 being provided with a compression spring 53 and an operating plunger 54 for replacing spools and for retaining spools in properly aligned position.
As best seen in Figure 8, a feed spool 55 is provided to which one end of the strip material contained on the supply spoolv is secured in any convenient manner. The feed spool is mounted for feeding rotation, and for this purpose I have indicated a splitresilient mounting shaft 56 over which the spool 55 is forced. The spool 55 is retained on the shaft 56 by a spring pressed center 51. The shaft 56, as best seen in Figure 9,
is mounted for rotation in a web 60, extending` transversely of the base 20 and is retained therein by a ring 6|. At the opposite side of the web 60 from thespool 55, the shaft 56 is provided with a ratchet wheel 62, best seen in Figure ll. The ratchet wheel 62 is mounted on the end of the shaft 56 and is held thereon against rotation by any suitable means.
An operating lever 65 is pivoted to the web 60, as indicated'at 66, and has an upper arm 61, provided with an offset portion 68, which extends through'an opening 69 in the web 60 and underlies the lever 2| so as to be engaged thereby. The opposite end of the lever 61 is provided with a pawl 10 which is biased by a spring 1| into engagement with the teeth of the ratchet disc 62. Also mounted on the web 60 is a stud 12 to which is secured a tension spring 13, the other end of which is secured to the lower end of the lever 65, as seen in Figure 11. The spring 13 continually biases the lever 65 in a clockwise direction.
A keeper spring 14 is also carried by the stud 12, and has a free yend engaging the ratchet teeth of the disc 62. The keeper spring 14 prevents counterclockwise rotation of the ratchet disc 62, while permitting substantially free clockwise rotation as imparted thereto by the spring pressed pawl 10.V Pin 15 carried by the web 60 extends into the path of the pawl 10, as best seen in Figure 8, and serves to limit clockwise rotation of the lever v65 under the inuence of the spring 13.
The offset portion 68 of the lever 65, as previously described, underlies the free end of the lever 2|. When the lever 2| is moved downwardly on a cutting and applying stroke, the lever 65 is rotated in a counterclockwise direction, and the spring pressed pawl 19 slides over the teeth of the ratchet disc 12 to a new engaging position. At this time the spring 13 is tensioned, thus energizing the lever 65 for subsequent operation. As previously stated, however, it is necessary to delay the feeding operation of the tape 4 I' until such time as the apertured die plate 38 and the plunger.

The means for delaying the feeding operation takes the form of a latch 80, pivoted as indicated at 8| to the web 69. The latch comprises a bell crank having arms 32 and 83. The arm 83 adjacent its upper end is provided `with a projecting lip 84. The free end of the arm 82 has attached thereto a tension spring 85, secured at f its other end as indicated at 86 to the web 60.
As the lever 65 is moved in a counterclockwise direction, the offset portion 68 moves in an arc about the center 66, until eventually it reaches a position where the lip 84 of the latch 80 engages thereover. Tension spring 85 retains the latch in latching position, thus overcoming the tension of the spring 13 which tends to return the lever 65 on its clockwise stroke.
When the lever or frame 2l moves upwardly out of engagement with the offset portion 68, the lever 65 is retained in latched position until the latch is released.
Secured to the underside of the frame or lever 2| is a depending arm 9D having an elongated slot 9| therein. The arm 82 of the bell crank 80 is provided with a pin 92 received within the slot 9|. As the frame or lever 2| reaches its uppermost position on its idle or return stroke, the pin 92 is engaged by the lower end of the slot 9|, thus moving the bell crank 88 in a clockwise direction a distance sufficient to disengage the lip 84 from the projecting portion 68 of the actuating lever 65. The actuating lever 65 at this time moves in a clockwise direction under the influence of the tension spring 13, and a rotation is imparted to the ratchet disc 62 in a clockwise direction. As previously described, the ratchet disc 62 is connected in driving relation to the spool 55 so that the adhesive tape 4| is advanced in a step by step manner.
It will be appreciated that' upon downward movement of the frame or lever 2| a small disc of adhesive coated material is cut from the tape 4|, whether or not a card is received within the groove 23 of the frame or lever 2|. In order to prevent an accumulation of discs to be gathered by operation of the device when no card is present therein, I have provided a lock which will prevent downward movement of the lever or frame 2|, except when the lock is released. This lock is best illustrated in Figure 7 and comprises a block 95 mounted in the base I9 between the front edge thereof and the web Bl. The clock 95 has a projection 96 adapted to be moved forwardly under the free edge of the lever 2! so as to prevent downward movement thereof. An actuator for the block 95 takes the form of a rod 91, having a manual button 93 attached thereto. The rod 91 is provided with a reduced annular vcard and the underlying plunger 34.
groove 99 adjacent its free end with'which is adapted to cooperate a spring pressed latch |00 received within an opening I'l in the web 6'0. A compression spring |02 is provided, biasing the latch l'upwardly, the spring being retained in the opening IBI by means of a. threaded plug |83.
In order to limit upward movement of the frame or lever 2|, I provide the same with a forwardly extending flange |04, as best seen in Figure 7, which is adapted to be received beneath the upper portion of the base I8. Downward movement of the frame or leverV 2| is limited by engagement of the plunger 34v with a tabulating card received within the groove 23.
Conveniently the device may be supported on rubber pads |85, two of which are indicated in Figure 9.
Referring again to Figure 10, it will beobserved that when the frame or lever 2| is moved downwardly so as to cut a disc from the tape 4|, the disc will be brought into contact with the under surface of the card l0 while the card is spaced slightly from the undersidel of the view plate 25. In most cases, suicient pressure will be applied to firmly affix the adhesive coated disc to the rear surface of the card without bringing the view plate 25 into rigid engagement with the In other Words, a slight cushioning effect will be had by reason of the thin ledge 26'which underlies the view plate 25.
While I have illustrated and described a single preferred embodiment of my patch aii'lxingv device for tabulating cards, it will be understood that this specific description has been made solely to enable those skilled in the art to practice the invention, the scope of which is indicated by the appended claims. Y
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A device for applying patches to the rear of a card by reference solely to indicia viewed from the front of said card comprising a transparent view plate having locating marks thereonjan applicator adjacent said view plate in registry with said marks, said applicator and view plate being relatively movable toward each other, whereby a card positioned between said applicator and said View plate with a portionof its front face in registry with said locating marks will receive a'patch on its rear surface in registry ltherewith upon relative movement toward each other between said View plate and'applicator.
2. A' device for applying patches to therear of a card by reference solely tov indicia viewed from the front of said card comprising a transparent View plate having locating marks thereon,`an applicator adjacent saidview plate in registry` with said marks, said applicator comprising'a die, and a punch element relatively movable towards'aid plate, said punch element adapted with said die to cut a patch from a strip of material and thereafter to move said patch intoY contact with the rear surface of a card positioned between said view plate and said 'applicator.
3; A device of the class' described comprisinga die, a relatively movable punch element cooperable therewith, means for positioning strip material adjacent said die, feeding means for said strip material energized by relative approach between said die and punch, and delay means cooperating with said' feeding means for delaying feeding until said die and punch have separated.
4. A device of the class described' comprising a die; a YrelativelyY movable punch element cooperable Itherewith, means for positioning strip material adjacent said die, feeding means for said strip material operated by relative movement b'etween'said die and punch, and delay means cooperating with said feeding means for delaying feeding until said die and punch have separated, said feeding means comprising spring operated ratchet means, and'said delay means comprising a latch preventing actuation of said ratchet means until substantial completion of a die cutting operation.
5. A device of the class described comprising a die, a relatively movable punch element cooperable therewith, means for positioning strip material adjacent said die,'spring operated ratchet feeding means for feeding said strip step by step, latch means cooperating with said feeding means, said feeding means being tensioned and latched upon relative movement between said die and punch in cutting directions, said latch being released to permit feeding of said strip only upon substantial completion of relative movement between said die and punch in the opposite direction.
6. A patch cutting and applying device comprising 'a base, a lever pivoted to said base and resiliently biased to inoperative position', said lever having a transverse slot for receiving a card having visible indicia on its front face, a transparent view plate in said lever over said slot, an apertured die in said lever beneath said slot and aligned with said plate, a punch on said base having a portion movable through said die upon pivoting of said lever, and means for supporting strip material between said die and punch when said lever is in operative position.
7. A patch cutting and applying device comprising a base, a lever pivoted to said base and resiliently biased to inoperative position, said lever having a transverse vslot for receiving a card having visible indicia on its front face, a transparent view plate in said lever over said slot, an apertured die in said lever beneath said slot and aligned with said plate, a punch on said base having a portion movable through said die upon pivoting of said lever, means for supporting strip material between said die and punch when said lever is in operative position, and means for feeding said strip material step by step.
8. A patch cutting and applying device comprising a base, a lever pivoted to said base and resiliently biased to inoperative position, said lever having a transverse slot for receiving a card having visible indicia on its front face, a transparent view plate in said lever over said slot, an apertured die in said lever beneath said slot and aligned with said plate, a punch on said base having a portion movable through said die upon pivoting of said lever, means for supporting strip material between said die and punch when said lever is in operative position, and means for feeding said strip material step by step, said last means comprising an actuator, means for energizing said actuator upon movement of said lever to operative position, and means delaying operationV of said actuator until substantialcompletion of return movement of said lever to inoperative position; Y

A device for cutting and applying patches to the rear of a card inlreg'istry with indicia most readily identifiable from the front of said card comprising' a transparent view plate, means for receiving a card with its front face `directly beneath said View plate, an applicator beneath said plate including a relatively movable element adapted to engage the rear of said card and to press the same toward said view plate to apply an adhesive patch to the rear of said card in alignment with indicia centered by said view plate.
11. A device for cutting and applying patches to the rear of a card in registry with indicia most readily identifiable from th'e`front of said card comprising a base, a frame mounted for vertical movement on'said base, said frame having a deep groove for receiving a card at one end, a transparent view plateV in said frame overlying said groove, an apertured die in said frame beneath saidgroove andaligned withsaid view plate, a plunger on said base slidable through the aperture kin said die into substantial abutment with saidfplate upon` downward movement `of saidframe, a transverse slot in said frame beneath said groove for receiving a strip of adhesive coated material,` and a'moistener on said base adjacent'said groove for moistening 'an area at the rear of said card.
12. A device for cutting and applypatches Vto the rearof a card in registry withindicia most readily identifiable from'the front of said card comprising a'base, a frame'mounted for vertical movement on said base, said frame havinga deep groove for receiving a card at one end, a transparent view plate in said frame overlying said groove, an apertured die in said frame beneath said groove and aligned withV said'view plate, a plunger on said base slidable throughthe aperture in said die into substantial abutment with said plate upon downward movement of said frame, a transverse slot in said frame beneath said groove for receiving a strip of adhesive coated material, and feed and supply rolls for feeding adhesive strip material through said slot. 13. A device for cutting and applying patches to the rear of a card in registry with indicia most readily identiable from the front of said card comprising a'base, a frame mounted for vertical movement on said base, said frame having a deep groove for receiving a card at one end, a transm parent View plate in said frame overlying said groove, an apertured die in said frame beneath sa1d groove and aligned with said view plate, a plunger on said base slidable through the aperture in said die into substantial abutment with said plate upon downward movement of said frame, a transverse slot in said frame beneath said groove for receiving a strip of adhesive coated material, and feed and supply rolls for feedlng adhesive strip material through said slot, and step by step feeding mechanism actuated by vertical movement of said frame associated with said feed roll.
14. A device for cutting and apply patches to the rear of a card in registry with indicia most readily identifiable from the front of said card comprising a base, a frame mounted for vertical movement on said base, said frame having a deep groove for receiving a card at one end, a transparent view plate in said frame overlying said groove, an apertured die in said frame beneath said groove and aligned with said View plate, a plunger on said base slidable through the aperture in said die into substantial abutment with said plate upon downward movement of said frame, a transverse slot in said frame beneath said groove for receiving a strip of adhesive coated material, and feed and supply rolls for feeding adhesive strip material through said slot, and step by step feeding mechanism actuated by vertical movement of said frame associated with said feed roll, said mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel connected to said feed roll, a spring pressed lever having a feed pawl engaging said wheel, said lever being moved by downward movement of said frame in an idle stroke, a latch engageable with said lever upon completion of downward movement of said frame, and means carried by said frame adapted to release said latch upon completion of upward movement of said frame.
15. A device for applying adhesive patches to the rear of a card in registry with indicia identiable most readily from the front of said card which comprises an applicator, means for receiving a card with its rear surface adjacent said applicator, and a locator having means cooperable with said indicia, said locator and said applictor being aligned whereby when said card is properly positioned between said applicator and said locator by said locator with reference to said indicia, said applicator will apply a patch to the rear of said card in registry with said indicia.
16. In the method of applying a patch to the rear surface of a card having indicia on the front face thereof, the steps of locating the portion of the rear surface to which the patch is to be affixed relative to applying means by viewing the indicia on the front face of the card, and applying the patch to the rear surface of said card while viewing said indicia from the front.
17. A device for applying patches to a perforated card comprising locating means and apatch carrying element at the rear of said locating means, said means and said element being relatively movable toward and away from each' other, i
a card being receivable between said means and element, said locating means having parts visible from the front by means of which a perforated portion of the card, viewed from one surface of the card, may be located thereby to receive a patch on its other surface over said perforation.
18. A device for applying patches to the rear of a card comprising locating means and a patch carrying element, at the rear of said locating means, said means and said element being relatively movable toward and away from each other, a card being receivable between said means and said element, said locating means having parts visible from th'e front by means of which a portion of the card carrying indicia on the front face of the card may be located thereby to receive a patch on its rear surface in registry with said indicia.
19. A device for cutting and applying patches to the rear of a card comprising locating means and a patch cutting and applying element at the rear of said locating means, said means and said element being relatively movable toward and away from each other, a card being receivable between said means and said element, said locating means having parts visible from the front by means of which a portion of th'e card carrying indicia on the front face of the card may be located thereby to receive a patch on its rear surface in registry with said indicia, and a supply of patch material in position to have a patch cut therefrom upon relative approach of said locating means and said patch cutting and applying element.
20. A device for applying patches tothe rear of a card comprising a patch applying element, means for receiving said card with' its rear surface adjacent said element, a locator having means visible from the front by means of which a portion of the card carrying indicia at the front of the card and spaced inwardly from the edges thereof may be located relative to said element by reference to said indicia at the front of said card.
21. A device for cutting and applying patches to the rear of a card in registry with indicia most readily identifiable from the front of said card, comprising a transparent view plate, a support for said view plate extending slightly below the lower surface of said view plate, an applicator directly beneath' said view plate including an element relatively movable toward said view plate to apply an adhesive patch tothe rear of a card inserted between said view plate and said element in alignment with indicia centered by said view plate, the lower surface of said support tending to prevent direct engagement between said View plate and said card so as to cushion the relative approach between said view plate and said element.
22. A device for cutting and applying patches to the rear of a card in registry with indicia most readily identifiable from the front of said card comprising a transparent View plate, means for receiving a card with its front face directly beneath said view plate, an applicator beneath said plate including a relatively movable element adapted to engage the rear of said card and to press th'e same toward said view plate to apply an adhesive patch to the rear of said card in alignment with indicia centered by said View plate, and means normally spacing the portion of said card directly over said element from the bottom of said view plate to provide a cushion effect.
23. In the method of applying a patch to one side of a card over a perforation therein, the steps of locating the perforation over which the patchI is to be affixed relative to applying means adjacent the said one side of said card by viewing the perforation from the other side of the card, and applying the patch to the said one side of the card while viewing said perforation from the said other side th'ereof.
24. A device for cutting and applying patches to one surface of a card over a perforation therein while locating said card by viewing said card from the other surface thereof, comprising a transparent view plate, means for receiving said card with its said other surface directly beneath said view plate, an applicator beneath said plate including a relatively movable element adapted to adhesively apply a patch to the said one surface of said card in alignment with a perforation centered by said view plate.
