ILLUMINATED MUSIC STAND Filed Nv. 7, 1941 s Sheets-Sheet s Inventor A itomcy meadow .5. flajaj I Patented Sept. 1, 1942 ETE D STAT E S EPT T OFF-1C 4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in music stands of a type designed primarily for use by orchestras, and has for its primary object to provide an article of this character in the form of a shield adapted" to be positioned in front of the musician and in which the shield is composed of a plurality of foldable sections adapted for folding into a collapsed form for convenient storage and transportation purposes.
A further important object of the present invention is to provide a distinctive and ornamental illuminating means for a translucent panel mounted in the front of the stand.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like part throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View looking toward the front of the music stand,
Figure 2 is a rear perspective view,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged rear elevational view showing the removable supporting means for the upper edge of the sheet music rack,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the supporting brackets for the upper edge of the rack,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the supporting member for the lower edge of the rack,
Figure 6 is a perspective view showing the front of the rotating illuminated display member, and
Figure 7 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 'l'! of Figure 6.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 5 designates the music stand generally which is in the form of a shield and including a front section 6 and side wings 1-'l. The side wings are connected to the side edges of the front section 6 by means of hinges whereby the wings may be folded fiatwise against the front section, when desired. In order to secure the wings in folded position a pair of spring catches 9 are secured adjacent the lower edge on the rear surface of the section 6 and the wing sections releasably engage in the snap catches 9 to secure the parts in position.
\ The front surface of the front section 5 may be provided with ornamental strips or -co1umns ll at :each side of a central translucent panel 12 which is fixedly mounted in an opening of afor- Wardly offset frame 15. The translucent panel 12 may be constructed of colored .or colorless Celluloid or other suitable material and may also carry a fanciful sign or display as shown at H.
A pair of spaced parallel vertical {guides I3 are secured to the inside of the stand at the edge of the frame member 15 and slidablypositioned in the guides is a transparent panel [3 which is positioned immediately behind the panel 12. The upper portion of the frame member is formed with a rearwardly extending overhanging top 15 beneath which is suspended a lamp shield 47 by means of an adjustable hanger I8. electric lamp -(not shown) is mounted in the lamp shield I! in a conventional manner, and has the electric wires l9 connected thereto which *extend downwardly :behind the front section :6 as :shown to advantage in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The rearsurface of the upperwedge of the front section 6 is also provided with a molding 20, to the edge of which is secured a bracket member v2|, one of the bracket members being positioned at eachside of the front section -6. The brackets include an intermediate offset portion 23 within which is formed a downwardly inclined slot 22 adapted to removably receive the outwardly projecting end of a pin 24 secured to th under side of a sheet music rack 25 adjacent the upper side edges of said rack.
Also secured to the under side of the rack 25 adjacent the lower edge thereof and projecting outwardly from each side of the rack is a wire loop member 26 adapted for engaging a spring clip 2'! secured to the inside of the Wings '1, the brackets 2i and the clips 21 thus cooperating to support the sheet music rack 25 in an inclined position as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
A rotatable lamp housing designated generally at 28 is supported on the front section 6 beneath the music rack 25, the lamp housing including a transparent cylindrical shade 29 having a rigid disk 30 secured at one end thereof from the central portion of which projects a shaft 3| operatively connected with an electric induction motor 32 of conventional construction. The motor 32 is secured to the inside of an attaching plate 33 1 and in which is mounted the electric connector 34 having the circuit wire 35 leading therefrom l are provided with headed studs l0 adapted to to a suitable source of current. The socket 34 is adapted to receive the'electric plug 33 which is attached to the circuit wires 19 leading to the lamp in the lamp housing ll. Circuit wires 31 also lead from the connector 34 to the opposite end of the shade 29 for connecting to an electric lamp 38 which is positioned in the open end of the shade opposite from the disk 3!].
The lamp 38 is supported in a bracket 39 attached to the inside of an attaching plate 40, the plates 33 and 40 being suitably connected at the opposite end of a semi-cylindrical shield 4| positioned in spaced relation at one side of the shade 29.
Each of the plates 33 and 40 include a flat flange portion 42 having a keyhole opening 43 therein for receiving a screw 44 projecting outwardly from the rear surface of the front section 6 whereby to support the lamp housing 28 in a horizontal position immediately behind the panel [3' and with the open side of the shield 4| adjacent the rear surface of the panel 13' whereby the panel 12 may be illuminated by the lamp The lamp shade 29 and panel l3 may be provided with suitable surface ornamentation 45 to be displayed on the panel I2.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a desired illuminated ornamental effect will be produced on the panel l2 when the music stand is supported in its upright position and when not in use the several parts may be detached and the wings I folded inwardly against the front section 6 whereby the device may be collapsed into a compact form for convenient transportation or storage purposes.
It is believed the details of construction, advantages and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A music stand comprising a plurality of hingedly connected sections of sheet material adapted for folding flatwise upon each other and adapted when open for standing in an upright position to form a front section and a pair of side wings, a sheet music rack detachably supported to the stand behind the front section, a translucent panel in the front section and illuminating means carried by the stand behind the panel for illuminating said panel.
2. A music stand comprising a plurality of hingedly connected sections of sheet material adapted for folding flatwise upon each other and adapted when open for standing in an upright position to form a front section and a pair of side wings, a sheet music rack detachably supported to the stand behind the front section, a translucent panel in the front section, illuminating means behind the panel for illuminating said panel and a movable transparent member between the panel and said illuminating means and having variable light transmitting ornamentations thereon adapted for projection on the panel by said illuminating means.
3. A music stand comprising a plurality of hingedly connected sections of sheet material adapted for folding flatwise upon each other and adapted when open for standing in an upright position to form a front section and a pair of side wings, a sheet music rack detachably supported to the stand behind the front section, a translucent panel in the front section, illuminating means behind the panel for illuminating said panel and a rotatable transparent shade between the panel and said illuminating means and having variable light transmitting ornamentations thereon adapted for projection on the panel by said illuminating means,
4. A music stand comprising a plurality of hingedly conected sections of sheet material adapted for folding flatwise upon each other and adapted when open for standing in an upright position to form a front section and a pair of side wings, a sheet music rack detachably supported to the stand behind the front section, a translucent panel in the front section, a lamp support detachably mounted on the front section behind the panel having an electric lamp mounted thereon for illuminating said panel, a cylindrical transparent shade surrounding the lamp and having variable light transmitting ornamentations thereon adapted for projection on the panel by said illuminating means, means for rotating the shade and a shield carried by the lamp support behind the shade.
