FOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,622, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed November 10, 1879. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES S. FOLEY and GEORGE W. OoMEE, of Waseea, Waseca county, Minnesota, have invented an Improvement in Folding Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to fold the cloth once before it is hem1ned; and the invention consists in the combination of instrunientalities, hereinafter described, for accomplishin g this object.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a folding-gage, in side elevation, in its connection d with a hemmer, clamp, and the presserbar of a sewing-machine. Fig. 2is a front elevation; Fig. 3, a perspective view.
In the drawings, A represents a plate having a scale, a, and arounded corner; B, a flat bar, made fast to one end of the plate and having the bends a c. It rises vertically from one side of plate A, then inclines over said plate, and finallypasses longitudinally under the plate. To the upright portion of this bar,
below bend a, is securedarod, O, bent at aright angle and inserted in lugs d d of a clamp, D. The latter is held to presser-rod E by a screw,
f, while the thumb-screw F holds the rod 0 in any desired position.
G is the presser-bar of a sewing-machine; H, a presser-foot, to which a hei'nmer, I, is attached, and K the needle-bar.
In operation these parts are arranged as shown in the drawings, and the edge of the article to be hemmed is passed over the plate 0, under the plate A, then around its outer end, and'then over its graduated face as far as the desired width of hein. The fabric is then fed into heninier I through the hole m, in which the needle works up and down, so as to be hemmed in the usual manner.
What we claim as new is The combination, with plate A, rod 0, heminer 1, and clamp D F, of the bar B, rising vertically from one side of plate A, then inclined over the plate, and finally carried longitudinally under it, as shown and described, for the purpose described.
JAMES STEVEN FOLEY. GEORGE WASHINGTON COMEE.
