Description

(ModeL) W. GRASSIOK.
Snap-Hook.v
No. 228,628. Patented June 8,1880.
WITNESSES INVENTOR 2 W 2222mm M 6 1 a/I BY ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM GRASSIGK, OF LUOKNOW, O NTARIO, CANADA.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,628, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed March 13, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM GRASSICK, of Lucknow, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Snap-Hook, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved snap-hook which does not require a spring to operate it and is simple in construction and effective in use.
The invention consists of a curved U-shaped hook having an inner second hook at the bottom, and having a latch arm pivoted to the end, which latch prevents the ring or staple from slipping out of the hook.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved snap-hook. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional elevation of the same.
The U-shaped hook A is provided with a short prong, B, and a long prong, (l, bent toward each other. A loop, D, is attached to or made integral with the end of the long prong O, and a latch, E, with a beveled lower end, is pivoted in the end of the short prong B, and is provided with one or two studs, F, forming a finger-catch at the upper extremity.
The long arm 0 is provided with a longitudinal recess, G, on its inner side, near the end, into which recess the lower extremity of the pivoted latch E passes. A nose or projection, H, on the inside of the long prong 0, forms a second inside hook and a cavity, J, in which the ring or staple K ordinarily rests.
The hook A is fastened to a rope or strap passing into the loop D. The outer side of the projection His inclined upward and gently curved, so that the ring K can easily pass into the cavity J and catch on the inside hook formed by the said projection.
The operation is as follows: If the ring K is to be passed into the hook A the latch E swings inward, as indicated by the dotted lines and the arrow at, and permits the ring to pass. The same is then drawn over the (ModeL) projection H, and rests in the cavity J, formed by the said projection and the end of the hook A. The ring will generally strike against the projection H; but if for some cause it leaves the cavity J it will glide down the inclined side of the projection H, and will strike the lower extremity of the latch E, pushing said latch forward in the direction of the arrow a until it rests against the forward end of the recess G, and thus prevents the ring from passing out of the hook.
If it is desired to take the ring out ot the hook the latch is rotated in the direction of the arrow to by means of the finger-catch or studs F, and is then held in a raised position, so as to permit the ring to slide out. i
The advantage that this improved snap-hoo possesses above those in use at present is its simplicity in operating without springs.
The within-described snap-hook can be made of any kind of suitable material, and can be used in any suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a snap-hook made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a U-shaped hook, with a recess and a projection, forming a second hook on the inner side near the bottom, and a latch pivoted to the end, as set forth.
2. The com bination, with the U shaped hook A, of the pivoted latch E, the recess G, and the projection H, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The pivoted latch E, combined with a hook having the end slotted, shortpron g Band a long prong, O, having a slot, G, in which works the end of said latch, as shown and described.
