Description
J. H. BULL. Car-Coupling.
Patented June 8,1880.
g lllllllllllllllll ENTERS. FWTO-LNNOGMPKF-R. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB H. BULL,-()F HEREFORD, MARYLAND.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,599, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed November 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JACOB H. BULL, of Hereford, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a draw-head embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and Fig. llS a plan or top view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention has relation to automatic cai couplings, or that class of couplings by which the draw-heads are coupled or linked together by contact with each other; and it consists in the improvement hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A is the draw-head, which, in the present illustration of my invention, is of the bull-nose type or class. Placed above the draw-head proper-is a plate, B,bent downward at its rear end, B, and perforated to admit of the insertion of a rod, D, which extends into the chamber a, formed by plate B and the draw-head. If desired, plate B may be pro vided with downward-extending side flanges,-
so as to close the chamber a all around and prevent dust, &c., from getting into it.
The upper plate of the draw-head A is slotted, as shown at b, and into this slotisinserted the triangular or beveled shoe 0 of a plate, 0, which slides upon the upper plate of the drawhead within the chamber a. The forward end of rod D is united to plate 0, and is encircled by a coiled spring, d, which impinges at one end upon the rear end of plate 0 and at the other upon the perforated flange B, through which rod D is inserted. Into the bottom plate of the draw-head A is inserted a tripblock, D, which serves the twofold purpose of tripping or raising plate 0, with its shoe 0, up
through slot 1), when it is shoved back into the draw-head by the insertion of the link, and of serving as an abutment for the link within the draw-head.
Upon the forward part of the upper plate, B, is an upward-projecting sleeve, 0, into which the coupling-pin E is inserted, with its point bearing against plate O, when this is in its forward position, impelled by spring (I. When the link is inserted into the draw-head its forward end, striking against shoe 0, forces this and plate 0 back from under the pin, allowing this to drop by its own gravity through slot 1) and through the link, with its point projecting through an aperture in the bottom part or plate of the draw-head, the pin being prevented from slipping through by a shoulder, f, at its upper end or head.
In the side view, Fig. 1, I have shown the coupling with the arrangement of its parts as before the insertion of the link, and in the sectional view, Fig. 2, I have shown the link within the draw-head in its coupled position. From this last-named figure it will be seen that after plate 0 has been tripped to allow the coupling pin or bolt to drop it will fly back with the point of its shoe 0 impinging upon that part of the link back of the coupling-bolt, so that upon the withdrawal of the bolt plate 0 will at once reassume its normal position under the point or end of the bolt, and thus permit the link to be withdrawn from under plate 0 and its beveled shoe 0.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-head A, slotted at b, and provided with.
the tripping-block D and chamber a, of the rod D, spring 61, and plate 0, having beveled shoe 0, projecting down into the draw-head through its slot b, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB H. BULL.
