UNITED STATES PATE Q QFFIGE.
ANDREW RUNSTETLER, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FAItMEBS FRIEND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
CORN-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,396, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed March 29, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, ANDREW RUNs'rETLER, a resident of Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn- Planters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in corn-planters of the class employing a main frame mounted on wheels having a seat for the driver, and which main frame is combined with a forward frame mounted on runners, carrying seeding devices for dropping the seed through the heel of the runners.
1 My improvement consists in providing a segmental lock-plate upon the central foot-levers pivoted to the standard supporting the drivers seat, and employed to raise and lower the runner-frame and to control the depth of fur- 2o row.
My invention also consists in combii'iing with the segmental lock-plate upon the footlever a lock-lever for holding the seedingframe in any given position, constituting a 2 5 rigid corn-planter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, showing my invention 5 Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same.
A represents the axle of the main frame.
0 0 represents a curved seat-standard. D represents the foot-lever, which is preferably pivoted in a slot cut in the foot of the seat-standard. E represents a slot in the forward part of the lever, through which a pivot-bolt 0n the 3 5 rear end of the runner-frame passes. F represents a foot-piece, which projects up from lever D sufficiently to be in easy reach of the drivers foot. G represents a segmental notchplate. Seat-standard O is slotted upward suf- 0 ticiently to allow it to turn with the lever Don pivot P. H represents a metal plate on the front of standard O. I represents a bearing for lock-lever K. L represents a craiilelever, one end of which is pivoted to standard 0,
4 5 and to the other end the hook-bar Kis hinged. Crank-lever L is operated by the hand of the attendant to release and engage lock K The attendant,
with segmental notches G.
(No model.)
with his feet, raises or lowers the runner-frame, and with his hand secures or releases lock K.
This device is cheaper and simpler than any hitherto employed for locking and operating the runner-frame.
The crank-lever Lis placed vertically above the segment, and, being operated by a crank, 5 avoids the use of a spring to set or release the lock.
A spring lock-lever might be used with a segment having holes instead of the device here shown withoutaft'ecting the invention specified inthe first clause of claims herein set forth. By means of this segmental plate and locking device the runner-frame can be rigidly set in any desired position and the weight of the front frame partly transmitted to and sustained by the ground-wheels.
Corn-planters have been provided with an adjustable drivers seat and with a fixed notched segment and a lever connected by in termediate devices with the front runners of the machine, whereby said runners could be raised or lowered by moving the lever rearwardly or forwardly, the said lever carryinga pawl engaging the notched segment, for the purpose of looking it in its adjusted position. Such, broadly, is not my invention.
I claim-- 1. The combination, with the standard 0, of the pivoted foot-lever D, carrying the notched segmental plate G, and provided with the footpiece F, and a locking device arranged to engage said notched plate, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the standard 0 and the elevating and depressing foot-lever D, carrying the segmental notched plate G, and provided with the slot E and foot-piece F, of the lock-bar K, mounted upon said standard and provided with a suitable operating device or devices, substantially as described. 0
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of March, A. D. 1880.
ANDREW RUNSTETLER.
