GEARING FOR ADJUSTABLE AWNINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,920, dated May 25, 1880.
Application filed March 16, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, -ERNST OTTO POHL, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for Adjustable Awnings, of which improvements the following is a specification.
My invention relates to awnings composed of a series of overlapping strips or slats hinged or pivoted to supporting-bars orrafters; and its object is to provide simple and efficient means for raising and lowering said strips which shall be conveniently applicable to and operate eflectivel y upon awnings of any desired size or length.
To this end myimprovements consist in the combination of a rock-shaft mounted in bearings above an awning, an operating-lever, and series of lifter-arms, each secured to the rockshaft, and a series of adjustable links or connections, each attached at one end to one of the lifter-arms, and provided at the other with a hook or other device for attachment to the awning, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, in elevation, of an awning with my improvements applied, andFig. 2 a plan or top view of the same.
My improvements are herein set forth in connection with a slatted awning of substantially similar construction to that described and shown in Letters Patent of the United States No. 208,632, granted and issued to me under date of October 8, 1878, said awning consisting of a series of overlapping strips or slats, a, each of which is pivoted. to a series of transverse guides or connecting bars, or, so that the entire series of slats may be raised and lowered to a greater or less extent, as desired, by longitudinal movements of the guidebars, and I impart such movements thereto by the following mechanism: r
A rock-shaft, K, mounted in bearings g upon the bulk, or in any suitable position above and parallel with the upper member of the series of slats a, has secured upon it a series of lifter-arms, 07-, (two or more,) varying in number according to the length of the awning.
An operating-lever, h, by which the shaftK may be vibrated or rocked in its bearings, is secured upon one of its ends, and a cord, h, is secured to the free end of the lever h, and
led over a pulley or pulleys to any point convenient for the application of power.
A link or connection, 6, the length of which may be varied and adjusted as required by means of a screw-coupling or swivel, f, is hooked or otherwise attached at one end to one of the guide-bars m and at the other to oneof the lifter-arms d, so as to transmit power applied to the vibration of the shaft K to the guidebars at and the connected series of slats a.
In operation, a movementof the lever h to the left will simultaneously elevate the entire series of slats, and upon the release of the lever they will drop by gravity into any required position corresponding with the degree of traverse which is allowed to the latter. The employment of the swivels f admits of such regulation of the lengths of the links e as to effect a uniform distribution of strainto cramping or binding in raising and lowering it, which is an important desideratum in awnings of any considerable length and weight.
I am aware that an awning composed of a series of overlapping plates or strips which are raised and lowered by toggles, arms, and
a series of pulleys and cords is old, the same being shown in the patent of W. O. Parisen,
No. 20,085, April 27, 185.8; and I do not therefore broadly claim a device whereby the power of the operator is applied to the awning at more than one point in its length.
I claim as my in "en tion and desire to secure by Letters Patent The within-described mechanism for operating slatted awnings, consisting of a rock-shaft carrying a series of lifter-arms and an operating-lever, in combination with a series of adjustable links or connections, each of which is attached at one end to a lifter-arm of the rockshaft and at the other to one of the connecting or guide bars of the awning, substantially as set forth.
