Description

B. SCHL'EIFER. Hook and Eye Fastener.
WITNESSES Patented April 20, 1880.
INXITOR 59 'r/ m ATTORNEYS.
"-1 PETERS, PHOTO-LITROGRAPNER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERTHA SO HLEIFER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOOK AND EYE FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,793, dated April 20, 1880.
Application filed January 22, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERTHASGHLEIFER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hook and Eye Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in securing hooks and eyes to strips of fabric (designed to be at tached to a dress-waist) by means of clasps or clamps, which are applied and secured as hereinafter described.
In accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, showing hooks and eyes secured to the lapped edges of strips of fabric according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clasp or clamp.
The hook A and eye B are secured by clasps D E to the strips 0 O, which are designed to be attached to a dress-waist or other like portion of a garment. Said clasps or clamps consist of the disk or broad flat central portion, D, and prongs or fingers E. The hooks and eyes AB are laid on the fabric in the required proximity to the respective edges of the parts 0 G, and the upwardly-bent prongs E E of the fastening device are inserted through narrow slits in the fabric and through the loops F of the respective hooks and eyes, and then bent outwardly in opposite directions over the loops F, so as to embrace the outer portions of the latter. The fabric is thus firmly clamped and held, by friction, between the loops F and body D of the fastening device, while the rigidity of the latter and the connection of its prongs E with the outer portions of the loops F prevent-s the fabric being drawn together or puckered between the loops when the hook A and eye B are connected, as shown in Fig. 1, and subjected to the tension incident to use of the garment of which the strips 0 0 form a part. Hooks and eyes can be attached by this means more quickly than by sewing in the usual way, and there is less danger of the fabric being torn at the points where the attachment is made. The device D E may likewise be detached without difficulty when required for any purpose.
I do not claim, broadly, a fastening device of the character hereinbefore described, since I am aware of its use as a paper-clip.
' What I do claim is The combination, with the strips 0 C, designed for attachment to a dress or other waist, of the hook A and eye B, and the fastening device D E, applied substantially as shown and described.
BERTHA SOHLEIFER.
