Description
H.V H. BRYANT. Branding-Stamp.'
Paten'tecll Aprl,20,'1880.
#VI/ENTOR @M #MW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEZEKIAH H. BRYANT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM VIRT WARREN, TRUSTEE, OF SAME PLAGE.
BRANDING-STAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,707, dated April 20, 1880.
Application filed February 24, 1880.
To all Iwhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HEZEKIAH H. BRYANT, of Boston, in the county of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Branding-Stamps; and 1 do hereby declare that the f'ollowing is a speciiication of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in branding-stamps such as are designed to be used for all the various forms and purposes of canceling, to brand any igure, design, or inscription. desired, and to brand checks, drafts, or other similar instruments in such manner as will prevent the alteration of the sums of money written therein; and it consists in the combination, with the tube of a brandin g-starnp, of a stirrup-frame connected thereto, and within which is swiveled a stamping-block, provided with a central opening for the passage of a flame, and with lateral passages leading from said opening to permit the spreading of the flame through the block when the same is in use and while the brandingsurface of said block is in contact with the ob- 2 5 ject being branded, whereby the brandingof wood or other block while in rapid and constant use is maintained at the requisite degree of heat for the purpose of canceling or branding the object to which it may be applied.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, my improved branding stamp is illustrated, Figure l being a face view of the stamping face or surface ofthe stamp, and showing its handle, holder, or receiver; Fig. 2, a section on line X X, Fig. 1 5 Fig. 3, a cross-section 'on line yy, Fig. l; Fig. 4, views showing a modification in the construction of the stamp adapting it to brand lines across the check or draft which fix the sum of money for which the same was drawn; Fig. 5, a crosssection of the stamping or branding block.
In the drawings, A indicates a handle, made material, and B a pipe which passes through the length of the handle A, and at one end, O, is to be suitably connected to the gas or other medium by the iiame of which the heating of that part of my device which does the brandingis accomplished, and at the other end, D, it is open for the burning,
figures or words in a` of Suffolk and State l ing iwhich is to mingle with escape ofthe gas, &c., thereat, and for its being there burned, and the heating of the brandpart of my device thereby secured. From the end O a smaller pipe, B', extends centrally into the pipe B, and terminates in an ejectornozzle, b', in close vicinity to the apertures b provided in the pipe B for the admission of air, the gas before the same is burned, and this construction is adapted for the purpose of discharging the gas through a minute opening in close proximity to the apertures b, so tha-t the head or force provided by the pressure in the gasmains maybe sufficient to force the gas beyond said apertures, and so on to the end D of the pipe B, and also have sufficient suction force to draw in the air (through apertures 12) desirable to be mingled and burned with the gas, whereby a greater degree of heat is generated.
At the iiame end D of the pipe B is located that part of my device which performs branding, and for the reception of the same the pipe Bis provided with a stirrnp-frame, E, to which the branding part of my `device F is swiveled, as shown, at a point which will bring the branding device F at or near the focus of heat produced by the flame.
The branding-block F may be made of any material suitable to resist intense heat, and, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, is secured within a ring, Gr, and that ring swiveled in the stirrup-frame E, or the branding-block F may be swiveled directly to the stirrup-frame E, and the ring G dispensed with. The brandingbloclr F is swiveled, either directly or indirectly, within the stirrnp-frame E, so that it will adjust itself to the plane of the article being branded and insure a more complete operation of the branding-stamp than would be practical were the block F held rigid within the stirrnp-frame E. The use of the ring Gr will be found advantageous where it is desirable to use the stamp a great number of times in quick succession, as it tends to hold the flame more closely in and about the block F, and thereby maintain it ata greater degree of heat.
H designates the branding face or faces of the branding-block F, and a the openingor channels in a connection made with the gas in the mains,
the operation ot' my branding-stamp may be described as follows: The flame from the burning gas, 85e., at the end D of the pipe B inlpinges aga-inst the bac-l; ot' the branding-block F, passes through the opening or openings a., below the face or faces H of the brandingblock F, and so, by reason of the upward tendency otI heat, secures the full heat t'orce of the flame against the face or faces H, which are to do and do perform the branding, whereby the brandingblock F is'brought up to and is maintained at the required degree of heat.
The grooves or channels b I), connecting with the openings a in the branding-block F, permit the llame to pass through them (as through l the article being ues) while the faces H are in contact with branded, whereby the full force of the heat, substantially, is constantly maintained against the sides of the faces H, thereby enabling the stamp to be used with greater rapidity (and without cessation) than would be practical without the use of these channels or lues b b.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with the tube of a branding-stamp, of a stirrup fixed thereto and supporting the swiveled branding-block having a central opening for an uninterrupted passage ot llame through the block and a series of channels or lues extending across the face ot' the block from its edge to the central opening to divide the branding-surface and spread the llame, substantially as described, whereby the branding-block can be kept at a uniform heat and adapt itself' to the object upon Which it is applied.
HEZEKIAH H. BRYANT. Witnesses:
