Description
0. I. CHRISTMAS. Hand-Power Attachment for Sewing-Machines;
- No. 226,492. I Patented April 13,1880.
ATTORNEYS.
NPETERS PHOTD-LITNOGRAPHER WASH NGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. CHRISTMAS, OF RIVERTON, MISSISSIPPI.
HAND-POWER ATTACI- IMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,492, dated April 13, 1880. Application filed October 1, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. CHRIsT- MAS, of Riverton, in the county of Boliver and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved HandPower Attachment for Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish an attachment adapted for connection to the treadle of a sewing-machine, whereby the machine may be driven by hand alone, or the attachment used to assist the operation of the machine by foot; and my invention consists in a certain novel combination of devices adapted for connection to the machine and for operation in the manner specified.
My hand-power attachment is shown in the' accompanying drawing, and will be described in connection therewith.
The drawing shows a perspective view of the attachment in position for use.
A is a lever or rod of wood or metal, formed at one end with a mortise or recess, a, and formed or having attached to it at one side, near the mortise a, a short arm, I), that is formed with a mortise or recess, 0, and is fitted with a thumb-screw, d, entering into the mortise c. The opposite end of the piece A is slotted or mortised to receive the end of the hand-piece B, which is hung by its end in the mortise by a crosspin, d, so that the piece B may swing. There is also attached to this end of piece A a short standard, 0, carrying springarms f, between which the piece is caught to retain the same in position when not in use. The upper end of the hand-piece B is formed with an aperture, 9, so that it may be grasped and held readily in the hand of the operator, and both the parts A B are of such a length that the attachment, when applied, comes to a convenient position for use.
The manner of attachment to the machine is illustrated by the drawing, wherein a treadle and treadle-rod are shown in dotted lines.
The mortise a of pieceA is put over the treadle- 5 'the treadle in the usual manner, or the machine driven entirely by hand. When both hands are required upon the table the pieceB is to be pushed back and caught into the spring-arms f, which will retain it in position.
This attachment is simple and effective, and especially useful in relieving the operator of continuous work with the feet.
The attachment may readily be removed when not required for use, and may be used with treadles of other machines.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The improved hand-power attachment for sewing-machines, consisting of the piece or lever A and hand-piece B, connected together and adapted for connection to a treadle, substantially as described'and shown.
2. The attachment for sewing-machines, consisting of the lever A, fitted with the slotted arm I) and clamping-screw d, and having combined with it the handle B, substantially as described and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination with lever A and handle B of the hand-power attachment, the standard e and spring-arms f, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
OHARLES THOMAS CHRISTMAS.
