1 Claim.

This invention relates to a smoking pipe and more particularly to a filter therefor, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will trap tobacco juices containing a content of nicotine and other moisture through the use of fresh tobacco as a filtering or absorbent medium and which adds to the flavor of the smoke obtained from the pipe and also tends to cool the smoke thereby providing for a more pleasant and enjoyable smoke to the user.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View illustrating a smoking pipe equipped with a filtering means constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view illustrating the device.

Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating the filter medium holder.

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view showing the filter medium holder positioned for the reception of tobacco received from the bowl of the smoking pipe.

Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 showing the filter medium holder positioned for use during the smoking of the pipe.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates in entirety a smoking pipe including a bowl 6, a comparatively short stem 1 and a bit 8. The bit 8 is of a conventional construction and has a frictional fit with the stem so that it can be removed therefrom or rotated relative thereto.

In adapting the invention to a pipe of the kind described and shown the stem 1 is provided with a comparatively large bore and the base of the bowl is provided with a concaved recess 9 in alignment with the bore of the stem and coacts therewith in rotatably receiving a semi-cylindrical shaped holder l0 including an end wall I l on which is formed a tube l2. The end wall II has a port 13 communicating with the tube l2 or in other words placing the tube in direct communication with the interior of the holder.

The holder opposite the open side thereof is provided with a row of perforations or openings M. The tube [2 extends into the bore of the bit with a frictional fit so that on rotation of the bit relative to the stem the holder I0 will be rotated within the recess 9.

Prior to placing or loading the bowl of the pipe with tobacco the bit 8 is rotated to bring the open side of the holder 10 disposed uppermost so that in filling the bowl with tobacco the holder also will become filled with tobacco. The stem is further rotated to bring the perforations or openings l4 uppermost trapping tobacco in the holder so that when the pipe is smoked, the smoke from the burning tobacco must pass through the perforations and the tobacco confined within the holder l0 through the tube [2 and bit to the mouth of the smoker. The smoke passing through the tobacco confined within the holder will have moisture containing nicotine content removed therefrom and also the tobacco within the holder will add flavor to the smoke besides cooling the smoke. After the tobacco has been utilized or burned within the bowl and it is desired to replenish the pipe for smoking again the bit is rotated to dispose the open side of the holder uppermost in the bowl so that the tobacco trapped therein will fall from the pipe by way of the bowl, whereby upon replenishing the pipe with fresh tobacco the holder will be again charged with fresh tobacco. A further rotation of the bit brings the perforations of the holder uppermost and traps the fresh tobacco in the holder for a pleasant and enjoyable smoke as heretofore described.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction,

combination and arrangement of parts may be a made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

In a smoking pipe, a bowl, a short stem integral with the bowl and. having a comparatively large bore entering the base of said bowl, a bit detachably and rotatably fitting in a portion of the bore and having a smoke passage centrally thereof and communicating centrally of and with one end of the bore, a tube secured in the smoke passage of the bit and protruding a limited distance beyond the end of the bit entering said bore, a disc-like end wall integral with the tube and abutting said end of the bit and having a centrally located aperture aligning with the tube, and a semi-cylindrical fire resisting holder having an open side and one end integral with the periphery of the disc-like end wall to extend into the bore with a frictional fit and into the bowl with the other end thereof closed by said bowl, said container having a row of perforations located opposite to the open side of said 5 container and normally disposed uppermost in the bowl with the open side of the container normally located lowermost in the bowl and bore and closed thereby and adapted to have tobacco therein fed into said container from the bowl by turning the bit in the stem to locate the open side of the container uppermost in said bowl prior to igniting the tobacco in the bowl.
