Description

Nov. 25, 1941. E. DE CARLO DOLL HEAD Filed July 5, 1941.
INVENTOR. [57m/fo e (0f/0 Patented Nov. 25, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DOLL HEAD Esquilio De Carlo, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application July 5, 1941, Serial No. 401,082
3 Claims.
This invention relates to hollow doll heads generally and more particularly to such heads made of thin stiifened fabric front and rear headmask sections joined together at their side edges.
One object of the invention is the provision of a head of the nature referred to having means whereby a large gluing or pasting area is provided on each head section.
Another object of the invention is the provision of such a head in which each head section is provided with a partition or backing wall, the outer surface' of said walls constituting the gluing or pasting surface for securely uniting the head sections.
A further object of the invention is the provision o-f such a head in which the front face mask section is provided with a pair of openings at its side edges for the reception of a pair of ears, which, when the backing wall is in position will be firmly held in the head against unwarranted displacement.
Another object is to produce a device of the character described in which the maximum simplicity of construction and operation is secured.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting substantially in the novel arrangement and corelation of parts herein fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein similar reference characters are used to describe corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then finally pointed out and specifically defined and indicated in the appended claims.
The disclosure made the basis of exemplifying the present inventive concept suggests a practical embodiment thereof, but the invention is not to be restricted to the exact details of this disclosure, and the latter, therefore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive standpoint.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustration, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a doll head made in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View taken on line 2-2 Fig. l;
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 3--3 Fig. 1 and Figure 4 is a fragmental side view of the face mask showing the ear receiving opening.
Referring now to the drawing in detail 5 indicates a doll head which comprises a front or face mask section 6 and a rear head section l, each of the said sections being preferably made of stiffened fabric. The front or face mask portion of the head is provided with a pair of openings 8 for the reception of ears 9 made of any suitable material, each of said ears being provided with an end flange Il] which is longer than the opening 8. Secured to the face mask or shell 6 is a wall II preferably made of cardboard, the said wall being pasted or glued along its peripheral edge I2 to the inner surface of the face mask 6. It will be seen that with the said wall in place the ear 9 cannot be accidentally displaced.
The rear head section like the face mask is hollow and has secured thereto a card board wall I3. By the application of a coating of paste or glue I4 the two head sections are connected together to form a complete head. If desirable a disk I5 is glued to the head material in a bead or groove I6 formed at the bottom of the head. The juncture or seam Il between the head sections B and 'I may if desirable be covered by a strip of tape I8 so that the head presents a finished appearance. It is to be understood that the tape used is substantially thin and may be colored to merge with the coloring of the head.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a hollow doll head made of a pair of shell sections, the said shells being each provided with a partition the outer surfaces of which may have a coat of adhesive glue or the like applied thereto so that the said sections may be easily and securely attached one to the other and will not readily come apart.
It will further be seen that the front face mask section partition will act to prevent the ear from being pulled out or otherwise dislodged from its position on the head.
While I have shown and described a doll head, it is to be understood that animal heads may be formed in exactly the same manner and that wherever in the claims the term doll head is used such animal heads are to be included.
Having described my invention what I claim n as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a doll head, a front face mask shell having a pair of oppositely disposed openings at the side edges thereof, an ear in.each opening, a flange on the ear of larger dimensions than the opening, and a partition secured to the head mask in close proximity to the ears to prevent accidental removal of same.
2. In a doll head, a front face mask shell having a pair of oppostely disposed openings at the side edges thereof, an ear in each opening, a iiange on the ear of larger dimensions than the opening, a partition secured to the head mask in close proximity to the ears to prevent accidental removal of same, a rear head portion shell, and a partition at the front of the rear shell, the said partitions being connected to each other by an adhesive coating on their outer surfaces.
3. In a doll head, a. front face mask shell, a rear head portion shell, said front face mask shell having oppositely disposed openings at the side edges thereof, an ear in each opening, a flange on the ear of larger dimensions than the opening, a partition secured to the edge of the rear head portion shell, a partition secured to the edge of the front face mask shell in close proximity to the ears to prevent accidental removal thereof, the said partitions being connected to each other by an adhesive coating on their outer surfaces and a tape covering the juncture 10 between the two head sections.
