Description

J; J, HOD OVAN WATERPROOF SLEEVE FOR CANVAS BREECHES I Filed May 5, 1941 His ATTORNE Y JVENTOR.
Patented Oct. 28, 1941 ,WATERPROOF SLEEVE FOR CANVAS BREECHES John J. Hodovan, Lorain, Ohio Application May 5, 1941, Serial No. 391,844
2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in canvas breeches of the type used by hunters and fishermen and relates more particularly to a waterproof sleeve therefor.
An object of my invention is to provide a sleeve for use with canvas breeches of the type referred to which can be attached to such breeches.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sleeve for use with canvas breeches of the type referred to which will be adapted to be worn either inside or outside of knee-high boots worn with such breeches.
Another object of my invention is to provide such new and improved sleeve for use with canvas breeches as will be waterproof and will prevent the ingress of water within boots worn with such breeches.
Another object of my invention is to provide a waterproof sleeve of the type referred to which will be inexpensive to manufacture, composed of few parts and highly eflicient in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide a new and improved sleeve for use with canvas breeches, which will avoid discomfort to the wearer of 'such breeches and of knee-high top boots from'water and enable the wearer to withstand rain or water without discomfort, and provide suitable protection for the wearers legs.
Other objects of my invention and the invention itself will become increasingly apparent by reference to the followingvdescription and the appended drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a front plan view of breeches provided with the water-proofed sleeve of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear plan view of the breeches and sleeve of Fig. 1;
Fig.3 is an enlarged rear sectional view of the sleeve of Figs. 1 and 2 showing the manner in which the sleeve is secured to the breeches and is secured in place thereon;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view ofthe water-proofed sleeve of my invention;
Fig. 5 is a view of the sleeve of Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, showing the same in position upon the breeches and in an optional position with respect to the boot within which it is adapted to be disposed and which are worn with said breeches.
Referring now to the drawing in all of which like parts are designated by like reference characters, at I, I show a pair of canvas breeches of the type with which the improved water-proofed sleeve 2 of my invention is adapted to be worn. In Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive,-said sleeve is shown worn over the top of knee-high boots 3, although the end portions 4 of .such sleeve may be telescoped within the upper portion of the boot, as can readily be appreciated.
In Figs. 3 and 4, a more complete view of the sleeve of my invention is shown, Fig. 3 illustrating the method of securing said sleeve, which isconstructed of water -proofed or weather-proofed material, preferably canvas, which has been suitably treated or prepared to withstand moisture, said sleeve comprising a relatively narrow band of treated canvas or the like material having a stitched upper edge 5 and a hem portion 6, the upper edge 5 being turned over and stitched to the leg of the breeches with which it is to be associated, in the manner shown in Fig. 3 adjacent that portion of the breeches immediately below the knee portion thereof, which is positioned' just above the front laced portion of the breeches, as shown in Fig. 4.
To secure the opposite ends of the said sleeve together, the same is stitched, as shown at 8, and is provided with a zipper fastener 9 immediately therebelow, said zipper being disposed vertically thereof immediately at the juncture of said opposite ends of the sleeve and substantially at the middle of the back of the leg .of said breeches, as shown in Fig. 2.
A flap 9 is disposed beneath the zipper opening to protect the zipper and, closely adjacent to such zippered opening, disposed on either side thereof and spaced therefrom by narrow panels In and II, the sleeve is provided with a pair of elastic inserts I2 and I3, each preferably 2" wide with an expansion of 1" each, these inserts being 6" long and extending in the manner shown in Fig. 3 vertically of said sleeve for an extent 7; of the sleeve length bein g stitched to the material of said sleeve on the underside thereof, the canvas material superposed over such inserts being gathered whereby when the elastic inserts are secured thereto expansion of said sleeve is permitted to suit the individual wearer of the breeches. It, furthermore, permits the sleeve, to take up less space when the same is telescoped within the top of knee-high boots worn therewith than when the bottom portion 4 of said sleeve is placed on the outside of the top of said-hoot, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
In Fig. 5, the sleeve of Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, is shown telescoped within the upper periphery of a knee-high boot l8.
The zipper shown in connection with the sleeve .of my invention in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive is of the conventional type and is used to provide a watertight closure of the sleeve which has been espelcially processed, as before described, toprevent iwater'and the like entering the boot and therelby'c'ausing discomfort to the wearer and the elastic means, whether inserted as in the forms shown, or provided by lastex stitching, ensure a close fit to assist in the protection afforded by :the sleeve.
Although I have shown and described preiferred forms of my invention, I contemplate that numerous and extensive departures may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims.
is; 1. As an article of manufacture, a pair, of
breaches having a limb encircling portion, a
water-proofed sleeve secured to the outer face of the limb encircling portion of the breeches adjacent the knee portion thereof, the sleeve having. a vertically slotted portion, separable Having described my invention what I claim said slotted portion and disposed on either side thereof snugly holding the sleeve in position upon said limb encircling portion whereby moisture is prevented from entering boots adapted to be worn with said garment and with which said sleeve is adapted to have contact.
2. As an article of manufacture, a pair of canvas breeches having a limb encircling portion, a water-proofed sleeve secured to the outer face of the' limb encircling portion of the-breeches adjacent the knee portion thereof, the sleeve having a vertically slotted portion, separable v fastening means for closing said'slotted portion to draw the opposite ends of the sleeve together,
verticallyextending elastic portions spaced from said slotted portion and adjacent to said slotted portion and disposed on either side thereof snugly holding the sleeve in position upon said limb encircling portion whereby moisture is prefastening means for closing said slotted portion to draw the opposite ends of the sleeve together,
vertically extending elastic portions adjacent to vented from entering boots adapted to be worn with said garment and with which said sleeve is adapted to have contact. 1
