It is a further object of this invention to provide such a Jacket construction wherein the garment material is provided with a belt-forming tuck adjacent the waistline which divides the jacket into a body portion and a skirt portion and which forms a yieldable belt defining the bottom edge of the jacket and retaining the garment snug about the waistline of a wearer when it is worn as a waist-length Jacket with the skirt retracted, and which belt-forming tuck provides a free, readily accessible, support for the separating end of a slide fastener detachably connecting the sides of the body portion of the garment above the waistline.

It is a further object .of this invention to provide such a construction wherein the skirt is provided with pockets having openings underlying the belt-forming tuck and effectively covered portion of the garment, a tuck ll formed by a line of stitching l5 extends transversely of the panels 9 and Hi from edge to edge of the garment front opening.

These and other objects and advantagesof the invention will appear from the following description takenin'conjunction with the accompanying drawing which forms a part thereof, and will be pointed out in the appended claims.

Fig. 1 is a view of the inside of a jacket constructed according to this invention, with the skirt retracted to form a waist-length garment;

Referring to the drawing in detail, the garment comprises a body portion generally designated 5 having a skirt generally designated 6 extending therefrom, and a collar 'I'and sleeves 8 attached thereto.

The body portion 5 is formed by a back panel 9 and front panels Ill connected by longitudinal seams l2, the collar 1 being attached to the upper edges of the panels 9 and ill at the neck opening of the garment. As shown, the lower end of the skirt 6 is provided with a plurality of female snap fastener members l9 (Figs. 1 and 3). which cooperate with complementary male fastener members I90. suitably located'on the panels 9 and 50 of the body portion 5 in such manner that the skirt Smaybe retracted or drawn-upwardly and retained smooth against andwithin the body portion 5 by these fastener members l9, l9a, as shown in Figs, 1 and 4.

Secured by stitching 21 to the skirt-forming panel extensions la is a pair ofpocket patches 20, each having a transverse pocket opening slit 22 at its upper end in which is, optionally, secured a slide fastener 23 to form a pair of slide fastener closed pockets. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the pocket openings 22 and the slide fasteners 23 thereof are disposed beneath the tuck it which is retained snuglythereover by the yielding resilient strips l6 therein.

The front closure opening of the garment extends downwardly from the collar 1 to the lower edge of the belt-forming tuck l4 and a slidefastened closure is formed thereat by theslide fastener generally designated 25. This slide fastener includes two stringers 26 and 3|. One stringer 26 is secured to the edge of one front panel ill at the specified location. This stringer comprises a tape supporting a row of interlocking fastener members 21 having a conventional form a hip-length jacket.

Secured to the edge of the other front panel I in the above-described location is a com-plementary slide fastener stringer 8! which comprises a tape supporting a row of spaced interlocking fastener members 21 having a top stop 28 at its upper end and the male or pin member 83 of a slide fastener separating end fitting at its lower end. This pin member 83 is complementary with the retainer member as described above and cooperates therewith in known man- 1 ner detachably to connect and disconnect the lower ends of the stringers 28 and 8| which are progressively connected and disconnected by sliding movement of the slider 88 longitudinally with respect to the fastener members 21 of the stringers 28 and 8|, in known manner. The pin member 88 and retainer member 29 of the bottom end fitting are secured to the ends or extremities of the belt-forming tuck H as shownv in Figs.'l and 2.

As shown in Fig. 2, the separating end fitting is thus readily accessible to the garment wearer by reason of the freedom of attachment from the garment and skirt of the belt-forming tuck l8.- Thus, the wearer may readily grasp the retainer '28 of the separating end fitting, both in opening and closing the slide fastener to open and close the front of the garment. This freedom is unimpaired by the position of the garment skirt 8,

because the hand of the wearer may be readily I slipped under the tuck l4 when the skirt is retracted as shown in Fig. l, as well as when the skirt is extended, as shown in Fig. 2. The skirt 8 may be tucked into the trouser or skirt of a I wearer to prevent the entry of cold wind between the Jacket and other clothing of a wearer. Likewise, it may be worn outside a nether garment, as shown in Fig. 2.

From the above description, it will clearly appear that I have provided a new and improved convertible jacket, readily and conveniently convertible from a waist-length jacket to a hip- 1 length jacket, and vice versa, wherein an integral tuck extending about the jacket intermediate its length forms a yieldable belt maintaining the jacket snug against the waist portion of a the wearer-and wherein this tuck, in addition,

provides a free yieldable support for the bottom end fitting of a separating slide fastener extending downwardly to this tuck, the separating end fitting being readily accessible and normally yieldingly held snugly against the wearer.

In addition to the above functions, the yielding a belt formed by the tuck provides a yielding covabove-described structure is merely illustrative .and in nowise limiting and that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as are included within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A convertible jacket comprising a hiplength garment havinga tuck extending therearound at the waistline and dividing said garment into a body portion and a skirt, a slidefastened closure extending downwardly to said tuck and including a separating slide fastener with a separating bottom end fitting fixed between the ends of said tuck and supported thereby free of the garment body and skirt, and complementary detachable means on said skirt and the inside of said body portion for retaining said skirt in retracted position inside said jacket to form a waist-length jacket with a slide-fastened closure substantially coextensive with its length and convertible to a hip-length Jacket byextension of said skirt.

2. In a garment, a garment body, a tuck extending around said garmentv body intermediate its length, yielding means associated with said tuck and forming therewith a yieldable belt, a slide-fastened closure in said garment body extending downwardly to said tuck, said'slide-fastened closure including a separating slide fastener with a separating bottom end fitting secured between the ends of said tuck, said tuck providing readily accessible yieldable support for the separating end fitting of said slide fastener normally yieldingly maintaining said separating end fitting snug against a wearer.

3. In a convertible jacket,.a'hip-length garment, a tuck at the waistline of said garment dividing said garment into a body portion and a skirt, yielding means in said tuck rendering said tuck longitudinally extensible, said tuck forming a yieldable garment belt, complementary fastening means on said skirt and the inside of said body portion for detachably securing said skirt in retracted position inside said jacket to form a waistlength Jacket convertible into a hip-length jacket by extension of said skirt, said belt-forming tuck being disposed at the lower end of said jacket in the retracted position of said skirt,

' pockets on said skirt having pocket openings underlying said yieldable tuck in the extended position of said skirt, said tuck providing a yieldable covering flap for said pocket openings.

4. A convertible jacket comprising a hip-length garment,-atuck at the waistline of said garment dividing said garment into a body portion and a. skirt, yielding means in said tuck rendering said tuck longitudinally extensible, said tuck forming a yieldable garment belt, complementary fastening means on said skirt and the inside. of said body portion for detachably securing said skirt in retracted position inside said jacket to form a waist-length jacket'convertible into a hip-length Jacket by extension of said skirt, said belt-forming tuck being disposed at the. lower end of said Jacket in the retracted position of said'skirt, a slide fastener extending downwardly from the neck of said body portion and terminating at said belt-forming tuck, said slide fastener including a separating end fitting having'complementaryvpartsj secured each to one end of said belt-forming tuck, said tuck forming a free, yielding support for said complementary parts of said separating end fittingfor facilitating manual access to said separating end fitting both in the retracted position of said skirt and the; extended position thereof for opening and closing of said slide-fastened closure. in skirt.

5. A convertible Jacket comprising a hip-length either position of said garment, a tuck of tunnel form at the waistline of said garment dividing said garment into a bodyportionand a skirt, yielding means comprising resilient strips in said tuck rendering said tuck longitudinally extensible, said tuck and said yielding means forming a yieldable garment belt, complementary fastening means on said skirt and the inside of said body portion for detachably securing said skirt in retracted position inside said jacket to form a-waist-length jacket convertible into a hip-length jacket by extension of said skirt,-

said belt-forming tuck being disposed at the lower end of said jacket in the retracted position of said skirt, pockets on said skirt having slide-fastened fastener extending downwardly from the neck line of said body portion'and terminating at said belt-forming tuck. said slide fastener including pocket openings underlying said yieldabie tuck 15 in the extended position of said skirt, a slide a separating end fitting having complementary parts secured each to one end of said belt-forming tuck, said tuck forming a free, yielding support for said complementary parts of said separating end fitting for facilitating manual access to said separating end fitting both in the retracted position of said skirt and the extended position thereof for facilitating opening and closing of said slide-fastened closure in either position of said skirt while'providing a snug fitting covering flap for said slide-fastened pocket openings.
