11 Claims.
This invention relates to sanding wheel heads, the primary object of the invention being to provide a sanding wheel head including a continuous circular rubber cushion, constructed in such a way that portions of the cushion interlock with the central portion or core of the sanding wheel head with the result that movement of the cushion with respect to the core of the head will be prevented An important object of the invention is to provide a sanding wheel head wherein the hub and core are provided with recesses adapted to receive extensions of the cushioning member the extensions having openings for the reception of securing bolts for securing the sections together, the construction of the cushioning member being such as to insure against the cushioning member becoming loose from the hub of the sanding wheel head, when the sanding wheel head is in operation. l
Another object of the invention is to provide means for securing the sanding cloth to the I cushioning member of the sanding wheel head,
the securing means holding the cloth in such a way to insure against the cloth creeping or slipping over the periphery of the cushioning member.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed,
.without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational View of a sanding wheel head constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2.2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevational View of a sanding wheel head one of the side plates thereof having been removed.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the hub or core of the sanding wheel head.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the hub or core of the wheel is indicated generally by the reference character 5, the hub or core being constructed preferably of metal to lend Weight to the 5 is formed with an inwardly extended flange 6 which is provided with inwardly extended ofisets 1, defining a plurality of supporting surfaces 8. The hub or core also includes a disk 9 which is positioned against the edge of the flange 6, to secure the cushioning member, to be hereinafter more fully described, in position on the hub or core.
The cushioning member is indicated by the reference character l0 and is constructed preferably of rubber material, the cushioning member being formed with extensions I l of a construction to fit within the offset members of the flange 6, providing an interlocking structure for securing the cushioning member I0 to the hub or core 5. Extending inwardly from the periphery of the cushioning member, and disposed at points directly opposite to the olfsets T, are slots, which are designed for the reception of the sanding cloth, which is indicated by thereference character l3.
' Bolts indicated by the reference character i i, extend through aligning openings in the hub or core 5, disk 9 and cushioning member ID, securing the various sections of the sanding wheel head together.
On positioning the sanding cloth l3, the sandingcloth is placed against the periphery of the cushioning member I", and portions of the sand- .ing cloth are extended into the slots l2, providing loops I5, so that when the bolts 14 are positioned, they will engage the loops of the sanding cloth I3, securing the sanding cloth in position against slippage while in use. The bolts used in securing the free ends of the sanding cloth to the wheel, are of split formation, one of the bolts being shown in section in Figure 5 of the drawings. The split bolt which is indicated by the reference character I6, is hollow, and when this bolt is positioned, within the inner end of the slot of the cushioning member to secure the sanding cloth, the bolt I1 is forced into the hollow bolt l6, causing the side walls of the split bolt IE to expand into close engagement with the sanding cloth and the cushioning member.
Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the ends of the sanding cloth which are shown as looped around the split bolt I5, will be securely held in position.
The securing bolt shown by Figure 5 of the drawings, includes a threaded head portion [8 formed with a screw driver slot !9, whereby the split bolt may be positioned in the threaded opening of the head or core of the sanding Wheel sanding wheel head. As shown, the core or hub head.
7 ing wheel head disks together.
The shaft on which the sanding wheel head is supported, is indicated by the reference character 20, one end of the shaft being threaded to receive the nut 21 to further secure the sand- It wil1 be seen by observing Figure 2 of the drawings, one side of the hub or core is forced against the shoulder 22 of the shaft 25!.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a sanding wheel including a hub or core section and a cushioning member over which the sanding cloth is positioned, the hub or core and cushioning member, being provided with means whereby they may be interlocked and secured together against movement with respect to each other.
