3 Claims.
This invention relates to Well pumps and more particularly to an apparatus for operating the pump rod or plunger of a deep well.
It is one object of the invention to provide an operating apparatus including a Walking beam having specially constructed mounting means rising from a base upon which driving means for the walking beam is also mounted.
Another object of the invention is to provide the walking beam with improved heads at one end for carrying cables by means of which the walking beam is connected with the pump rod or plunger of a pump and reciprocating motion transmitted to the pump rod when the walking beam is in motion.
Another object of the invention is toso form the cable-carrying head that it may be angularly adjusted relative to the walking beam and thus cause the cables to have proper engagement with the head when the walking beam is in motion.
Another object of the invention is to provide a head which will be firmly braced against bending when subjected to strains and in addition,
firmly braced against movement relative to the walking beam after it has been moved to a desired angularly adjusted position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pump operating apparatus which is simple in construction, strong and durable and not liable to break or get out of order when in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pump operating apparatus which may be power driven or hand operated.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing the improved pump operating apparatus installed for use with a pump.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing the walking beam and its head partially in side elevation and partially in vertical section.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged View showing the connection between the cables and the pump rod or plunger.
This improved pump operating apparatus is for use as means for imparting reciprocating motion to the pump rod or plunger l of a deepwell pump 2. The base 3 of the apparatus, which has side and end bars 3a and 3b, rests upon the ground in spaced relation to the pump and on this base is mounted a fulcrum frame 4 having front and rear corner standards 5 and 6,
the lower ends of which are secured upon the base by brackets 1'. between the front and rear standards and there have also been provided cross bars 9 extending between the standards to assist in bracing thestandards. At their upper ends, the standards carry a head it! having upwardly extending bearings I l at its opposite sides. A walking beam l2 extends horizontally over the fulcrum frame and is provided with a depending ear or hin e block l3' pivotally mounted between the ears H by means of a pivot pin or shaft M. The walking beam carries a hinge plate I5 which is secured on the front end of its upper face by bolts l6 and has its forwardly projecting portion rolled to form a hinge sleeve [1 through which passes a pin !8. Ends of the hinge pin is project from opposite ends of the sleeve and engage through openings formed in flanges l9 projecting rearwardly from opposite sides of a head plate 20. The head plate, which is formed of stiff, strong metal, is curved longitudinally and adjacent its upper end is formed with transversely spaced openings 2! through which are passed upper ends of a pair of cables 22. Metal collars 23, serving as stops, are secured about the rear- Wardly projecting upper ends of the cables and serve to limit movement of the cables forwardly through the openings. It will thus be seen that the cables will be prevented from slipping forwardly out of the openings when subjected to strain of the weight of the pump rod l with which lower ends of the cables are connected by clamping plates 24. These clamping plates are formed of strong metal and secured against opposite sides of the pump rod by bolts 25. Arms 26 project laterally from the clamping plates or jaws and are formed with openings through which lower end portions of the cables are passed, collars 21 being secured about the protruding lower ends of the cables to act as stops and prevent them from slipping upwardly through the openings when upward strain is exerted upon the cables to draw the pump rod upwardly. By adjusting the head plate about the pin l8, the extent to which the pump rod is shifted longitudinally may be controlled. After the head has been so adjusted, it must be secured in the adjusted position and, in order to do so, there have been provided bracing strips 28. These bracing strips have their upper ends connected with down turned ends or ears 29 of a hanger or yoke 30 by bolts 3|. through the sleeve and said flanges and mounting the head plate for tilting adjustment, the flanges having their lower portions formed with openings spaced from each other longitudinally of the flanges, a hanger bracket carried by said walking beam, links secured at their upper ends to said hanger bracket, and fasteners at lower ends of said links passed through selected openings of the flanges to adjustably hold the links in engagement with the flanges and maintain the head plate in an angularly adjusted position.

In order that the walking beam may be power operated, there has been provided a crank shaft vrotatably supported by-be'arings 3'! extending up- ,wardly from the base at opposite sides thereof.
This crank shaft is connected with a clevis 38 upon the walking beam by a pitman 39 and when the crank shaft is rotated, the Walking beam will be rocked about its pivot pin or shaft I4 and the-cables will be acted upon to reciprocate the pump rod l and force oil or water out through the discharge pipe 40 of the pump. A drive shaft Al is rotatablymounted by' bearings 42 and, in order that rotary motion may be transmitted from the drive shaft to the crank shaft, there have been provided pulleys 4'3 and 44 about which a belt 45 is trained. The drive shaft also carries a large pulley 46 about which a belt 41 is trained for transmitting rotary motion to the drive shaft from a suitable source of power.

1. A pump operating apparatus comprising a walking beam mounted for rocking movement, a vertically arcuate head plate at the front end of said walking beam having rearwardly extending flanges along its side edges, amounting plate secured on the front end portion of said walking.

fulcrum rising from said base and having a bearingat its upper end, a walking'beam over said fulcrum pivoted in spaced relation to its front end to the bearing head of the fulcrum, a vertically arcuate head plate at the front end of said walking beam, cables having their upper ends connected with the upper portions of said head plate and spaced from each other transversely of the head plate, clamping plates having side arms, lower ends of said cables being engaged with the' side arms to suspend the clamping plates fromzthe cables, and bolts for drawing" the clamping plates towardeach other'into gripping engagement With the pump rod of a' pump tobeoperated.
