France, assignor to Socit Anonyme: Jaeger- Aviation, Levallois-Perret, Seine, France Application July 12, 1939, Serial No. 283,947 In France Auguste, 1938 The present invention has for mainobject a new industrial product constituted by an indicating pointer which presents the distinctive features set forth hereinafter, so as not to hinder the visibility of the dial near its centre and to be sufiiciently rigid notwithstanding its lightness.
The indicating pointer according to the invention is constituted by a bar of U-shaped cross section the webof which is cut away along either sid of the centre on suitable lengths, and the branches of which are slightly curved inwardly in the form of a very open V; the centre receives a barrel having a head, a cylindrical part which passes through the web of the bar and a riveting plate, then the rod of the barrel, the connection between the said cylindrical part and said rod of the barrel being ensured by a frustum-shaped recess the edges of which are bent down to form the riveting; the indicating end part is obtained by cutting out the branches and the web or the bar and the opposite end part receives a balancing rivet secured in position in the same manner as the barrel. H
The accompanying drawing illustrates, by way of example only, a form of construction of the indicating pointer according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation and axial section.
Fig. 2 is a corresponding plan view.
Fig. 3 is similar to Fig. 1, but on an enlarged scale and with parts broken away..
Fig. 4 is a section made according IV-IV oi Fig. 3. r
Fig. 5 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the barrel before riveting.
The pointer illustrated is composed of a bar I to line serves the twofold purpose of partly counterbalancing the greater length and weight of web l over web H, and giving the pointer desirable inertia, or momentum, in movement, while the rivet I2 completes the counter-balancing efiect and serves to retain the plate l3 in predetermined position.
The cut away parts 3 and 4 allow, so to speak, of seeing through the pointer, which allows the central part of the dial to be used which would be partly concealed by a solid pointer; moreover the pointer is extremely light, whilst being of suiilcient rigidity. r
The pointer according to the invention is applicable to all measuring instruments and indicating devices but, more particularly to those the dial of which comprises a plurality of juxtaposed indicating graduations and which does not cooperate with the recessed pointer according to the invention, which must pass over them without concealing them.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. An indicating pointer for use upon an indicating apparatus including a unitary bar of substantially U-shaped cross section which is pivotally mounted at a point intermediate the extremities and has upon both sides of the pivot'ally mounted portion of the bar an open area in the web portion thereof extending limited distanca along said bar toward said extremities.
2. An indicating pointer according to claim 1,
v having the side edge portions exteriorly concave of U-shaped cross section, more particularly. visible in'Fig. 4, the branches l of which are slightly curved in the form of a very openV.
The web l of saidbar is cut away on either side of the centre. 2, as shown at 3 and 4'. The
cut away part 3 on the side of the indicating part 5 isnot so long as the cut away part 4 on the opposite side, so as to reserve a greater visible length tor-the indication, which is moreover covered with a' luminescent coating if desired.
The barrel of the pointer comprises (Figs. 3 and 5) a head 6, then a cylindrical part 1 (passing through the centre land a riveting plate 8), and finally the rod of the barrel 9. Between the parts 1 and 9 a circularpitting I0 is effected the edges of which, by being bent down with a tool will serve to form the riveting shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The riveting plate 8 serves the purpose of stifiening and reinforcing the intermediate portion of the pointer, and gives it a body which will tolerate riveting over the lower edge of cylinder 1 of the pointer center.
At the end ll opposed to the indicating end 5 is secured a rivet l2, with an inner riveting plate l3, similar to the plate 8. The riveting plate I3 and extending along the major portion of the length or the pointer past the open areas in the web portion of the same.
' dicating pointer for use upon an indi- Qatm appratus-includinga unitary bar of substantially U-shaped crosssection which is pivotally mounted at'a point" intermediate the extremities and has upon both sides of the pivotally mounted portion of the bar an open area in the web portion thereof extending limited distances along said bar toward said extremities, a reinforcement member of limited length located within the outline and cross sectionalprofileot the intermediate portion 01 said bar, and a pivot head or barrel having a lower portion passing through said intermediate portion and said reintorcement member to serve as the pivotal mounting for the pointer, said lower portion or the barrel having an edge portion bent over to retain said reiniorcement member assembled with said bar.
4. An indicating pointer according to claim 3, having a rivet means secured to the web portion toward one extremity of. the bar while said bar is cut at the other extremity to form the indicating end 01 said pointer.
