H. M. DUFAULT COOKING AND HEATING RANGE Fiied Nov. 9, 1940 Patented Aug. 19, 19 11 COOKING AND HEATING RANGE Homer D. Dufault, Easthampton, Mass., assignor to Holyoke Heater Company, Holyoke, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application November 9, 1940, Serial No. 365,076
2 Claims.
Thisinvention relates to cooking and heating stoves or ranges and is directed more particularly to an improved kitchen range construction having a circulating heater contained therein in such a way as to be relatively inconspicuous yet readily available for efficient and economical use.
It is one of the principal objects ofthis invention to provide a novel cooking range having a heating compartment or device incorporated therein which is adapted to send warm air into the room in which the range is contained. As will appear, a special feature of the invention is that the range has an outward appearance which is substantially similar to that of, or at least not objectionably different from, ranges now in common use so as to be commercially saleable while at the same time it has new and distinct advantages over conventional range constructions.
According to this invention, the range has a novel air-duct box or container therein which includes a circulating heater device so constructed and arranged as to send warm air into the kitchen or other room of the house. appear, the device is contained within a particular compartment of the range which would probably otherwise not be utilized to as good a purpose and the arrangement is such that the desired room heating is achieved without inter- I fering with the other functions of the stove.
The range may have the usual cooking gasburners with a baking oven and broiler therebelow, and by reason of the unique arrangement about to be described, there may also be a so- 1 called utility drawer or compartment at one side of the top of the range. The construction is such that said utility drawer and thetop gasburner compartment may be substantially coplanar both for the sake of appearance and convenience and the air-duct box above mentioned is preferably disposed below the utility compartment and so associated with the other parts as to provide a so-called warming closet between itand the baking oven or broiler compartment.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a unitary and compact range construction wherein there is a room or air heating device which is normally more or less concealed from view and which utilizes space in the range which would otherwise not be used. That is to say, I not only provide for the disposition of room-heating means in a part of the range which in the ordinary case is wasted space but my construction is such that the usual unsightly ap- As Will the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein;
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a construc-- tion embodying the features of the invention with parts in section to explain certain features thereof;
Fig. 2 is a partial end elevational view of the apparatus of the invention;
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of what is shown in Fig. 1 with parts in section, also for the sake of clearness;
Fig. 4 is a rear elevational view of the upper part of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 with dotdash lines to explain certain features thereof; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention Will-be fully described.
In general the range will include front and rear walls 2 and 4 respectively and end walls such as 6 shown in Fig. 2. A so-called secondary air chamber I0 is located beneath one end of the cooking top, and this contains what are called top-range gas burners having gas-cocks I 2.
Below the compartment l0 there may be oven and broiler compartments normally closed by doors l4 and I6 respectively. There may or may not be a back-splash wall member I8 extending vertically and upwardly from the rear of the range.
At a side of the range burner compartment there may be a utility compartment 20 for containing various kitchen implements, for example, and it may have a drawer therein. as shown. It
is preferably substantially coplanar with the.
chamber in so that a relatively flat cooking top is provided.
There is a wall 30 extending transversely of the range between the front side thereof and the rear wall, located at one side of the oven and broiler compartments. This serves to provide a chamber which preferably has a transverselyextending shelf member 32 separating it into an upper warming closet 34 and a lower compartment 36 which may or may not contain a burner device of any desiredconstruction for transferring heat to the shelf and thence to the compartment thereabove so that dishes or the like may be kept warm.
A casing 50 is contained within the storage compartment formed between the wall 30 and the adjacent end, front and rear walls of the range and this has its walls spaced from the in- 20, 1939. Such a unit is relatively self-contained and compact, as will be obvious, and is therefore particularly suitable for insertion in such a compartment as has been described and for co-operbodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination of the vertical side partition, and lower and upper walls forming oven and adjacent compartments of a range with room heating means independent of said oven comprising, an inner 1 casing wholly within the said adjacent compartment having an open lower side and vertical side and upper walls parallel with and spaced from adjacent walls thereof forming therewith an buter insulating air space around the inner compartment, a hollow heater unit, within the inner casing having an open lower side and vertical side and upper walls spaced from adjacent walls of said inner casing ating with the usual construction of a range can thus be maintained so that any advantages thereof are retained. To put it another Way, it
is such that the maximum efiiciency of the cooking and baking or heating compartments is still maintained while at the same time the room may be heated.
The air heater has a flue 10'- and, of course, the cooking and/or broiling part must also have a flue such as is indicated by I5. According to the preferred form of construction, these flues are connected by a flue member 12 which leads into a chamber or casing 14 on the back of the range and the whole combination is 'so arranged and constructed as to lead the products of combustion from the lower burner to a point above the level of, or at least on a plane with the point of discharge of the products of combustion from the This may be accomplished in various ways but is best achieved, according to this invention,'by providing a flue chamber 12 which extends upwardly on an angle between, and connecting from being directed other than upwardly or outwardly away from the stove or range.
The walls of the shell or casing are preferably spaced from the walls of the compartment within which it is'contained and its lower end is open, as shown. This provides an air-duct box and the lower wall of the storage compartment is preferably perforated, as shown, to permit the introduction of'air into the air-circulating heater chamber for obvious reasons.
The latter chamber has an outlet connection which is preferably covered by a grill-like member 60. This may obviously vary in construction and its prime purpose is to permit air which is warmed by unit D to be expelled into the room.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present emand providing therewith an inner warm air circulating space around the said heater, a burner at from the heater unit extending through said inner and outer air spaces and certain vertical walls to said stack, and the said lower wall of the outer casing provided with an opening to permit air to enter said heater unit, the insulating space around the inner casing and circulating air space around the heater.
2. The combination of the vertical side, partition, and lower and upper walls forming an oven and adjacent compartments of a range with room heating means independent of said oven comprising, an inner casing wholly within the said adjacent compartment having an open lower side and vertical sideand upper walls parallel with and, spaced from adjacent walls thereof forming therewith an outer insulating air space around the inner compartment, a hollow heater unit within the inner casing having an open lower side and vertical side and upper walls spaced fromadjacent walls of said inner casing and providing therewith an inner warm air circulating space around the said heater, a burner at the open lower side of the heater unit. a hollow connection between adjacent vertical walls of said inner casing and adjacent compartment adjacent the upper ends thereof extending horizontally through the circulating air space providing a passageway from the circulating space outwardly of the range into the room below the upper side thereof, a stack, the said lower wall of the outer casing provided with an opening to permit air to enter said heater unit, the insulating space around the inner casing and circulating airspace around the heater, and flue
