Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. THOMAS, OF WEST BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,182, dated March 2, 1880. Application filed May 31, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, JAMES E. THOMAS, of West Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of an end View of my improved table open or raised up. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same closed up for storing away. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are sections.
My invention consists of a combination of sides, cross-pieces, and braces arranged and pivoted together in such a manner that when desirable the whole can be folded together and stored away in a small space, or can be adj usted to any required height.
In the drawings, A represents atable-top, across and beneath which are fastened the bedpieces B. These bed-pieces B are provided with the notches E along the inner sides and.
near one end for the reception of the springb s O, which pass through the end of the sides D and engage with the notches E.
The sides D are composed of the pieces 1", 0,
z, and u, fastened together by bolts at the ends and middle, and, being allowed to turn on the fastenin gs, form an X-movement, which can be folded together or stretched out to the required height, as shown in the drawings.
F and H are cross-bars, which hold the sides D the proper distance from each other.
I and R are braces, one end of each of which is fastened to the cross-bar F, and the other end is secured to the cross-bar H by bolts which pass through the slots L, and are provided with the thumb-screws S.
When the table is being adjusted to the required height the screws S are loosened, and the bolts slide in the slots L, and when the proper height is attained the thumb-screws S are tightened and hold the braces I and R securely t0 the cross-bar H, thereby making the table stand firm and solid; and by loosening the thumb screws S and disengaging the spring-bolts G from the notches E the sides are allowed to fold together, and the table can then be easily carried about or stored away in a small space.
What I claim as my invention is The sides D, composed of cross-pieces 0, r, a, and '6, the cross-bar F, and the cross-bar H, provided with the slots L, in combination with the diagonal braces l and R and the thumbscrews S, substantially as described and shown.
JAMES E. THOMAS.
In presence of- G. H. FRANCIS, J. W. RHODES.
