-WOOD TURNING CHIP GUARD Filed Oct. 28,1939
INVENTOR JOH any JOQGE/YSON ATTORNEY Patented July 29, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WOOD TURNING CHIP GUARD Joel Clay J orgenson, Clifton, Tex.
Application October 28, 1939, Serial No. 301,783
1 Claim.
This invention relates to wood turning chip guards to be used preferably on the thumb of the left hand while turning wood in a lathe to prevent chips from flying back on the operator.
An object of this invention is to provide a wood turning chip guard of the character described having a spring clip to fit thumbs or fingers of various sizes, and also having a portion disposed at the forward end of the thumb or finger to intercept flying chips from the lathe and to cause the chips to fall to the floor instead of getting into the clothes of the operator.
A further object of this invention is to provide a wood turning chip guard of the character described, having a padded clip that goes around the thumb of the operator, to prevent irritating the thumb.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a strong, neat and durable wood turning chip guard of character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to put on and take off, comfortable in use, and yet practical and efiicient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claim.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention- Figure 1 is an elevational cross-sectional View through a wood turning chip guard embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view thereof;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view thereof; and
Figure 4 is a front elevational view of the improved chip guard.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, I designates a chip guard embodying the invention. The same comprises a member II preferably made of sheet metal and comprising a spring clip or clamp portion I2, a guard portion I3 and a neck portion I4 interconnecting said clip with said guard. The clip I2 has a bottom portion I5 and upwardly and inwardly curved yielding, bendable or resilient fingers I6. The clip is adapted to receive and substantially surround the thumb of operator. The fingers I6 are resilient, yielding or bendable to accommodate thumbs or fingers of various sizes.
. The neck portion I4 extends forwardly from the bottom portion I5 of clip I2.
The enlarged guard portion I3 is inclined upwardly and forwardly from neck I4, and is generally concavo-convex in shape and extends to opposite sides of said neck. The clip I2 of member II may be covered by a jacket 20 of padding material to prevent irritation of the thumb, and to make the chip guard more comfortable to wear. It will now be understood that the guard portion I3 is located in front of the thumb. When the chip guard is used by an operator while turning wood on lathe, the guard I3 prevents chips from flying back on to the operator or getting into the operator's clothes.
Clip or clamp I2 is slipped over the thumb between nail and first joint, and since member ID is made of thin sheet metal the fingers I6 may either be bent or flexed to accommodate them and to frictionally engage the thumb so that guard will not be loose.
It will be noted that guard I3 is concavo-convex, the concave face serving to prevent chips from glancing off the guard and onto the operator.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A wood turning chip guard comprising a sheet metal member having a spring clip adapted to surround and receive the thumb of the user, an enlarged concavo-convex guard portion, and a neck portion connecting said guard portion to said clip, said guard portion extending upwardly and forwardly from said neck portion with its convex side toward said neck portion, said clip being covered with padding material.
JOEL CLAY J ORGENSON.
