SHIPLEY WASHING MACHINE ATTACHMENT Filed March 21, 1939 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 II 4 V I J| Patented July 8, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,248,203 WASHING MACHINE ATTACHMENT John S. Shipley, Valley Station, Ky. Application March 21, 1939, Serial No. 263,239
2 Claims.
This invention relates to washing machines and more particularly to a. receptacle supporting attachment for use in connection therewith.
The object of the invention is to provide an attachment of simple and inexpensive construction capable of being quickly positioned over the vertical spindle of an oscillating washing ma chine for supporting an auxiliary receptacle thereon so that the oscillatory movement of the spindle may be utilized for churning cream in said auxiliary receptacle or washing light fabrics therein.
A further object of the invention is to provide a washing machine attachment in the form of an inverted conical frame detachably fitted over and movable with the oscillatory spindle of a washing machine and provided at its upper end with a platform adapted to receive and support a can or other liquid container.
A further object is to provide an attachment having means for detachable engagement with the radial blades of a washing machine agitator so as to permit the use of the attachment without the necessity of removing the agitator.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all figures of the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an oscillating washing machine showing the improved attachment in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the attachment removed from the washing machine.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a modified form of the invention showing means for detachably mounting the can supporting frame on the radial blades of an oscillatory agitator,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the attachment shown in Figure 4 detached, and
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view.
The improved attachment forming the subject-matter of the present invention is principally designed for use in connection with washing machines of the oscillatory agitator type, and by way of illustration is shown applied to such a washing machine, in which 5 designates the body of the machine, 6 the pivoted lid or cover, 1 the vertical spindle and 8 the mechanism for imparting an oscillatory movement to the spindle. The
attachment comprises an inverted conical shaped frame consisting of spaced downwardly converging angle bars 9 having their lower ends riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to a hollow base member [0 having an opening ll formed therein for the reception of the spindle 1. The upper or diverging ends of the angle bars 9 are riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to a flat supporting platform l2 adapted to receive and support an auxiliary can or other liquid receiver, indicated at l3. Secured to or formed integral with the lower surface of the platform I2 is a reinforcing boss I4 having a square opening l5 formed therein and adapted to receive the correspondingly squared terminal I6 of the spindle I so that oscillatory movement imparted to the spindle I by the mechanism 8 will be transmitted to the platform to oscillate the receptacle [3. The upper ends of the converging angle bars 9 are extended upwardly in a vertical plane above the surface of the platform l2 to form angularly disposed corner supports I! for engagement with the receptacle I3 so as to prevent displacement of the receptacle and cause it to oscillate with the frame. When the attachment is used for churning cream, the cream is poured into the receptacle l3 and the lid or cover I8 placed thereon. As the machine operates, oscillatory movement will be imparted from the mechanism 8 through the medium of the spindle l to the can or container [3 so as to thoroughly agitate and churn the cream, as will be readily understood. If desired, however, instead of using the can or container l3 for churning cream, it may be utilized for washing various kinds of light fabrics which are placed within the liquid within the container and the machine operated, as previously stated.
In Figure 4 of the drawings, there is illustrated a modified form of the invention capable of being detachably mounted on the radial blades IQ of a standard washing machine agitator. In this form of the device, the platform 20 is provided with upstanding angular corner brackets 2| for engagement with acan or liquid container 22. Secured to or formed integral with the bottom of the platform are a plurality of spaced depending attaching lugs 23 adapted to fit over the upper edges of the adjacent blades IQ of the agitator so that, when oscillatory movement is imparted to the spindle of the agitator by the oscillating mechanism 24, said oscillatory movement will be transmitted to the platform 20 and, in turn, oscillate the can 22 either for churning cream or for washing light fabrics therein.
The device is extremely simple in construction and can be readily attached to any standard type of oscillating washing machine without necessitating any structural changes therein. It will, of course, be understood that the attachments may be made in different sizes and shapes and constructed of any suitable material without departing from the spirit of the invention,
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a washing machine having a power spindle provided with an angular terminal, of an inverted conical shaped frame comprising spaced converging side bars, a member secured to the converging ends of said bars and provided with an opening adapted to receive the lower end of the spindle, a platform secured to the diverging ends of the bars and adapted to receive and support an auxiliary liquid container, a reinforcing boss on the platform and provided with an opening having angular walls for engagement with the angular terminal of the spindle, the upper end of the side bars of the frame being extended vertically above the upper surface of the platform to form supports for engagement with the liquid container.
2. An attachment for Washing machines comprising a frame having downwardly converginng bars, a member connecting said bars at the converging ends thereof and provided with a centrally disposed opening, a platform connecting the diverging ends of the bars and adapted to receive and support an auxiliary liquid container, means on the platform for engagement with the power spindle of a washing machine, and supports on the coverging side bars of the frame and extending upwardly above the upper surface of the platform for engagement with said liquid container.
