3 Claims.
This invention relates to a safety master lock for mobile bodies usually having multiple doors, and for example automobiles, aeroplanes land the like.
It is particularly aimed to provide a construction additional to the usual or standard locks and latches for the doors, which may be operated from the interior of the body or the exterior of the body to simultaneously lock and unlock all of the doors, a construction which may be under key control from the outside of the body, and a construction which has novel bolt means for the various doors, and mechanism to control the operation thereof.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

Referring specifically to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, the invention may be applied to the body or enclosure of any mobile body such as an automobile, aeroplane or any equivalent and which body is generally designated I0. It is shown as equipped with a plurality of doors II on each side thereof, which are hinged on vertical axes I2 to uprights or posts I3 of the body Ill located between them and which doors are adapted to swing outwardly as shown. Said doors are to be taken as conventional and to be equipped with the usual door lock or latch mechanisrn installed by the manufacturer of the automobile or aeroplane.
For the doors of each side of the vehicle, lock bolts or rods are provided at I4, I5 and I6 with a follower I'I between the bolts I5 and I6. All of such bolts and followers are alined but unattached to each other. Bolts I4 are longitudinally slidable in guide tubes or barrels I8 mounted in the body I0 forwardly of the front doors II, and are urged forwardly to unlocked positions by expansive coil springs I9 within the barrels surrounding the bolts and abutting closures 20 at the inner ends of the barrels and lugs 2| extending laterally from the forward ends of the bolts I4' and through elongated slots 22 in such' barrels. In the locked position, lsaid bolts I4 extend into sockets or sleeves 23, in the forward edge portions of the front doors II. Such sockets 23 and sockets or barrels 24 in the rear edge portions of the front doors II slidably mount the bolts I5 and the latter are urged to unlocked position through the expansive action of coil springs 25 abutting the tubes or barrels 24 at one end and an abutment 26 on the rod I5 which is adapted to abut the barrels 23 in the unlocked position ofsuch bolts I5.
In the locked position of the bolts I5, they extend, as shown in Figure 1, into a tubular guide or barrel 2l fixed in the post or partition I3. Bolts I5 abut the follower bolts I 'l which are slidably mounted by the barrels 2l in order to move the latter into tubular barrels or guides 28 carried by the rearl doors II at the front thereof and which mount one end of the bolts I 6, the other ends being mounted by guides or tubular barrels 29 mounted in the rear ends of the rear doors I I. Such bolts I 6 extend into barrels or tubular sockets 30 in the body I Il so as to lock the doors II in which they are mounted. Ex-` pansive coil springs 3| surround the rods I6 and at one end abut the tubular barrels 29 and at the other end engage abutments 32 on such rods. In the open position of the rear door I I abutment 32 will engage the barrel 28. Thus in the open or unlocked position of the doors II, the rods I5 will be completely within the length of the front doors II and the rods or bolts I6 will be completely Within the length of the rear doors Il and the follower bolts I I will be completely within the barrels 21 or posts I3 so that the doors may be freely operated as usual. It should be mentioned that the follower rods I 1 have enlarged heads at 33 adapted to abut the barrels 21 to limit for-v ward movement of the follower bolts and that such bolts also are surrounded by relatively Weak coil springs 34 abutting the heads 33 and barrels 21, to urge the follower bolts forwardly. The dashboard or instrument board of the automobile, aeroplane or like body I0 is conventionally shown at 35, and the cowl wall is suggested at 3S and hood part suggested at 31. Brackets 38 are mounted by the body ID and journal a transverse operating rod 3S in front of and parallel to the dashboard 35. Cranks 40, rigid With the operating rod 39 rise from opposite ends thereof and have elongated slots at 4| through which the lugs 2l extend. A central crank 42 rises rigidly from the operating rod 39 and to the top thereof is pivoted at ,43, a manipulating member or bar 44, which extends through an opening 45 provided in the dashboard 35 and in a latch plate 45 fastened thereto. Bar 44 has afnotch 41 which engages the plate or keeper 46 tov hold the bar 44 retracted and accordingly cause the cranks 4D to maintain the various locking bolts l4, l5,` I5 and l1 in rearmost or door locking position, overcoming the action ofA all associated springs. Bar 44 is held in such latched position by a contractile coil spring 48 engaging the same andengaging a lug 49 fastened to the rod 39.
When `the bar 44 is raised the various springs at I8, 25 and 3l will move the rods or locking bolts I4, 15,16 and I1 to unlocked positions thus enabling normal operation of the doors Il,
Inorder to prevent latching engagement of notch 41 with keeper 46 so that the parts may be unlocked from the outside, a closer member 48 in the form'of a metallic strip or bar is pivoted loosely at149 on the side of bar 44 for fastening in position exposing the notch 41 as in Figures 4, 6 and 8, or in a position closing such notch as in Figure 1. Bar 43' may also be'resilient and have a lug at '54' vwhich is selectively engageable with recesses 5l' and-52', provided in the side of bar44land adapted to hold the closer 43 respectively in the positions of Figures 6 and '1. To prevent accidental detachment of the lng 55] from either recess 5I or 52', an expansive coil spring 53'V bears against such member 43', surrounding a stud 54',` and abutting a head 55 thereon and a washer or disk 5B' loose on the stud. The stud passes through an enlarged opening 51' in the closer member 48', which opening enables the pivotall movement of the closer member. The closer member also is fastened in any suitable manner to the bar 44 as by means of a screw threaded shank 58. "Knobs 44a. and 48a are'provided on bars 44 and 48', respectively, toy facilitate their operation. As a result ofthe construction described, the doors may be locked by the invention, in addition to the usuallocking mechanism thereof, 'either from the inside of the automobile by an occupant with closer 48'l positioned as in Figures 4, 6, 8, 9 and `10 or from the outside of the automobile as when parked with closer 48' positioned to closenotoh 41, as in Figure '1. The master locking parts are normally unlocked and bar 44 is in its forward position. However, when such master locking mechanism is locked from the inside of the automobile, the bar 44 is pulled to the position of Figures 4, 6 and 8 with notch 41 exposed, and fastened therein by such notch 41 engaging the keeper 46. Such bar 44 has to be in forward position with notch 41 closed by member 48' to enable the doors to be opened. Hence when the automobile is parked, the key is inserted into the keyhole 50 of a pin tumbler lock so as to enable the cylinder 5l of such lock to be turned through the rotation of a handle 52. Cylinder 5| has a rigid crank 53 thereon which engages thesadjacent crank 54. Such a crank 54 is provided rigidly at each end of the operating rod 39 and each has a lug at 55 contacting the crank 40 so that through operation of the key, in keyhole 50, will cause crank 53 to operate adjacent crank 54, thus turning operating rod 39 and causing its crank 42 to move the bar 44 inwardly and the notch 41 to engage the keeper 45. Upon the return of the party possessing the key, it will again be inserted into the hole 5@ and the parts operated.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
l. In combination with a body having doors, co-acting bolts and parts on the doors and body to lock each door, means to cause movement of one bolt through movement of another bolt, said bolts being in alinement, means operable to move the bolts to locked positions, means urging the bolts to unlocked positions and within the confines of the ydoors whereby they will open with the doors, said operating means comprising a bolt and means to actuate the latter, the actuating means having structure to enable fastening to the body from the inside, and a device to render said structure inoperative for the aforesaid purpose, to enable locking` and unlocking from the outside of the body.
2. A locking mechanism of the class described having a bar provided with a notch engageable with a keeper to enable locking of the bar from the inside of an automobile or the like, a closer for the notch enabling locking and operation of the structure from the outside, means pivoting said closer to the bar, a lug on the closer, notches on the bar engageable by the lug to hold the closer in diierent positions, said closer having an enlarged slot, a stud extendingfrom the bar through said slot, and spring` means carried by the stud having expansive contact against the outside of the closer.
3. A locking mechanism of the class described having a bar provided with a notch engageable with a keeper to enable locking of the bar from the inside of an automobile or the like, a closer for the notch enabling locking and operation of the structure from the outside, means pivoting said closer to the bar, means urging said closer into contact with the bar, interengaging means between the closer and bar to hold the closer in different positions.
