IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,613, dated March 25, 1879; application filed August 7, 1878.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, GARNETT B. Brorcnns, of Farmville, in the county of Prince Edward and State of Virginia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pen-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of this invention. Fig. 2 is'a longitudinal section of the same, showing the holder slipped back and the pen in the handle-recess. Fig. 3 is a side view, with partial section, showing the rubber bearing. Fig. 4 is a cross-section at the handlerecess.

This invention has relation to improvements in pen-holders.

The nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a penholder and its staff, having on its end a solid inside bearing, and a retracting holding-sleeve forming the outer bearing for the pen, and adapted to slide to the rear on the pen-staff to release the pen.

It also consists in a pen-staif having an elongated recess formed in one side of its body, and a sliding sleeve, adapted to slide on said staff and to close said recess, forming a lateral receptacle for the pen.

It also consists in a pen=ho1der having an inner flexible bearing, combined with a staff having apen-recess in its body and a slit slidin g tube, forming, with the said recess, a penreceptacle, and with the said innerbearing a yielding pen-clamp, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the staff of my improved pen-holder, having at its lower end a rubber or other flexible tip, a, secured thereon in any suitable'manner. In rear of this tip a recess, '5, is formed in the start, of dimensions sufficient to receive an ordinary pen.

B indicates a metal tube of suitable length, that is passed over the rubber-tipped end of the staff in the usual manner, and forms, with the recess t, a receptacle, 0. The tip a fits snugly in tube 13, and constitutes an inner bearing for the pen, which is inserted in the lower end of said tube, between it and the bearing.

The lower edge of tube B is slit at one point, as shown at s, Fig. 1.

If the pen is inserted in the holder on the slit side of the tube, it will be soft and flexible in passing over the paper; but if at the opposite side, it will have greater stiffness. The holder is thus adapted to the use of soft or hard pens.

The pen being in the holder may be released therefrom, when required, simply by drawing back tube B, without soiling the fingers by contact therewith; and if it be desired to put the holder in the pocket, the tube B may be drawn off of the staff, the pen placed in the recess 6, with its point against the rubber bearing, and the tube again slipped on the staff, covering in the pen entirely.

It is evident the rubber bearing will yield at the rear end of the pen as the nib of the pen is pressed upon the paper in writing, and that its passage over the same will be smooth and easy because of such yielding, by which means the hand is prevented from becoming tired during many consecutive hours of writlng.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A pen-holder consisting of a staff having on its end the solid rubber inside bearing a, and a retracting holding-sleeve, B, slit at s, forming the outer bearing for the pen, and adapted to slide to the rear on the penstafi' to release the pen, substantially as specified.

2. The pen-stafl having the elongated recess '5, formed in one side of its body, and a sliding sleeve adapted to slide on said staff and to close the recess i, forming a lateral receptacle, c, for the pen, substantially as specified.
