3 Clalmsr My invention relates to cartons and has for mits of iorming the card as part of the blank from an object to provide a carton embodying a card or similar article carried thereby and detachable from the carton.

Another object of the invention resides in making said card part of the blank from which the carton is constructed.

A still" further object of the invention resides in constructing the carton with one of the walls thereof having a flap overlying the adjacent wall and secured thereto and in forming said card as part of said flap.

Another object of the invention resides in providing a carton in which the card serves to reinforce the flap and carton and to reduce the tendency of the flap from becoming loosened from the carton.

An object of the invention resides in providing saidfiap with a line of weakening forming the card and a stub to which the card is .detachably secured.

A still further object of the invention resides in attaching the flap to the wall which it overlies principally through the stub.

An object of the invention resides in constructing the card in numerous forms such as cut out configurations and configurations partly cut out and adapted to be detached from the body of the card.

Other objects of the invention reside in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter illustrated and/or described.

In the sale of various types of merchandise in cartons it becomes desirable to furnish with the carton certain cards which are used for various purposes. In some instances such cards have been used to provide figures, games, calendars and other objects of value to the user-of the merchandise contained within the carton as well as coupons, tickets or similar devices. The practice has been to separately attach such devices to the cartons or to place the same within the carton so as to permit of removal or detachment when desired for use. The present invention per which the carton is constructed and in a manner to permit of readily detaching the same when desired for use.

The carton shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is indicated in its entirety by the reference character A and is constructed from a blank l5 shown in Fig. 2 which is scored longitudinally along two score lines l6 and H and transversely along score lines I8, l9, 2| and 22. The portions of the blank outwardly of the score lines [6 and II are sheared along lines 23, 24, 25, 26, 21 and 28 and the corners of the blank designated at 3! and are removed. By means of this construction the blank is formed with side walls 33 and 34, end walls 35 and 36, a flap 31 issuing from one lateral edge of the side wall 33 and flaps 38 and 39 issuing from the upper and lower edges of the side and end walls.

In the construction of the carton the flap 21 is folded to overlie the end wall 36 and is attached thereto to form a tubular construction open at the ends. The top 4i of the blank is formed by the folding over and securing together the flaps 38 and the bottom 42 is similarly constructed by folding over and gluing together the flaps 39.

The fiap 31 is of a width equal to or less than the width of the-end wall 36 which it overlies. This flap is formed with a line of weakening indicated at 43 which extends generally in the direction of the score line l8 forming one edge of the side wall 33. This line of weakening may be formed by perforating, scoring, cut scoring or in any other suitable manner. By means of this line of weakening the flap 31 is constructed to provide a stub 44 and a card 45 issuing outwardly therefrom. The stub 44 is coated with glue and caused to adhere to the wall 36, the remainder of the fiap forming the card 31, being substantially disconnected from the wall. If desired, however, the card 45 may also be secured to the wall at intervals by tacking the same with small drops of glue as indicated at 40.

In the card '45 are formed two configurations designated by the reference numerals 46 and 41. These configurations when removed from the card may be folded together and assembled to form a house such as illustrated in Fig. 3 at 48. The particular construction of the house forming no feature of the invention, will not be .described, though it can readily be seen that the configuration 46 forms the walls of the house, while the configuration 41 forms the roof- Both of these configurations are partly cut out from the card 45 so that the same remain attached to said card only at isolated localities such as indicated at 49, whereby the configurations are readily removed by punching or pressing the same out of the card.

The use of the invention is as follows: In the manufacture of the cartons the stub 44 is glued to the wall 36 in the customary manner with the flap 31 overlying said wall .and the card 45 tacked thereto at 40. When the carton is to be filled the same is opened up and the bottom 42 formed by gluing together the flaps 39. Thereafter the contents are placed within the carton and the end flaps 38 glued together to close the carton. It will be noted that the flap 31 overlies the wall 36 and that the same does not in any manner interfere with the filling of the carton by machinery now available for the purpose and in accordance with the customary methods used. When the filled carton is received by the user, the card 45, if tacked to the wall 36, is loosened therefrom and separated from the stub 44 of the flap 31 by bending the same along the line 43 until said card may be readily disengaged, from the stub. Thereafter the parts 46 and 41 are pushed out of the card and then folded and assembled in accordance with the construction of the parts to form the structure shown in Fig. 3.

It will become apparent that the card 45 reinforces the stub 44 and protects the. same in a manner to reduce the chances of loosening the stub from the carton during packing, storage and shipment of the carton and merchandise contained therein. This permits of using a narrower stub than otherwise. Various types of cards may be used in place of that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 other types have been shown which are utilized with cartons identical with that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. For .this reason said cartons will not be again described and the same reference numerals preceded by digits 1", 2 and ,3 respectively, will be used to designate corresponding parts.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the flap overlying the wall I36 of the card is designated by the reference numeral I31. This fiap consists of a card I45 and a stub I44, the latter being attached to the wall I36 as previously described. The card I45 is cut out in the form of a-soldier or some other similar figure such as a doll or animal which is attached to the stub I44 along the line of weakening I43 and at spaced intervals. The figure may be removed from the stub I44 by bending the same along the line of weakening I43 whereupon said figure may be easily detached and when detached is complete.

In Fig. v5 the card 245 is constructed in the form of an automobile which is also cut out and which is attached to the stub 244 and severable therefrom along a line of weakening 243. This device similar to the card I45 may, if desired, be tacked to the wall I36 whereby the figure is held firmly in place.

In Fig. 6 the card is designated by the refer ence numeral 345 and is constructed in the form of a coupon having lines 346 formed thereon on which suitable legend may be written for the intended purpose.- The coupon 345 may be used to give away articles such as prizes or the same may be used to procure samples of other products of the manufacturer. In either case the coupon is detached in the same manner as previously described and used in accordance with instructions.

The advantages of my invention are manifest. The card is constructed as a part of the blank from which the container is made so that no expense is involved in the manufacture of the same apart from the actual cost of the material. By applying glue to the stub only the flap having the card is securely attached to the adjacent wall and the card caused to overlie said wall. In this manner the card is held positioned so that the same may be readily accessible and yet not protrude outwardly from the package in a manner to cause inconvenience to the user. By slightly tacking the card at its outermost edges, unintentional severing of the card from the stub 01 swinging of the same out of the plane of the wall which it overlies is prevented. At the same time accidental loosening of the flap from the carton is lessened. The flap with my invention performs a dual function. Besides serving as a connecting means for the two adjoining walls of the box, it forms a card which is held in position against the wall which the flap overlies. The invention can be economically constructed.

Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: 1. A carton having two juxtaposed-walls, a flap issuing from an edge of one of said walls and overlying the other of said walls, said flap having a line of weakening extending generally in the direction of the edge of said first named wall and forming on the flap a stub disposed between said line of weakening and the edge of said first named flap, and a card issuing from the-stub and disposed outwardly thereof, said card being detachable from the stub along the line of weakening, said stub being glued throughout its extent to the wall ,which the fiap overlies to connect the walls together, and maintaining said walls connected upon detachment of said card. said card at a locality outwardly from said line of weakening being tacked to said wall to hold the card in position prior to detachment.

2. A carton having two juxtaposed walls, a flap issuing from one'of said walls and overlying the other of said walls, said flap having a line of weakening forming on the flap a stub, and a card issuing from the stub and detachable from the stub along the line of weakening, said card being constructed in the form of a figure, the marginal portions thereof'being partly cut out and partly formed by said line of weakening, and forming a complete cut out figure when detached from the stub, said stub being secured to the wall which the flap overlies to connect the walls together and maintaining said walls connected upon detachment of said card.

3. A carton having two juxtaposed walls, a flap issuing from one of said walls and overlying the other of said walls, said flap having a line of weakening forming on the flap a stub, and a card issuing from the stub and detachable from the stub along the line of weakening, said card having portions thereof partly cut out to provide a configuration adapted to be removed from the card and a marginal portion detachably connected thereto, means for permanently securing said stub to the wall which the. fiap overlies, and means for removably securing the marginal portion of the card to the'same wall, said configuration being free from said wall.
