UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JAMES I. R. MANN, OF LEVIOKS MILL, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO SAMUEL G. CAMPBELL, OE SAME PLACE.
IM PROVEM ENT |N CORN-PLANTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,959, dated March 4, 1879; application filed December 1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES P. R. MANN, of Levicks Mill, in the county of Randolph and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Corn-Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan view of my cornplanter, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through the line at w.
This invention relates to seed-planters and the improvement consists in the novel construction of the operating mechanism, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the frame of the corn-planter, with hounds B B at the front, between which the tongue is to be placed. 0 is the axle, placed in suitable boxes under the frame A, and provided with the wheels I) D. The axle G is further provided with an eccentric, E, which operates a pitman, G, and this pitman connects with one end of an elbow-lever, H, pivoted upon the center bar of the frame. The other end of the elbow-lever H is, by a rod, I, passing through a slot in cross-bar L, which permits of the rod having vertical and lateral play in said slot, connected with the dropping-slide J, which passes through the bottoms of the two corn boxes or hoppers K K.
The eccentric E is loose on the shaft 0, and is thrown in and out of gear by means of a movable clutch, M, operated by means of a lever, N, at the side of the drivers seat 0.
V The corn-boxes KK are attached to a crossbar, L, and conductors P I? extend downward from the same, said conductors having the rear ends of the runners B R attached to them. The front ends of the runners are connected, by a hinge or equivalent means, to the front cross-bar of the planter-frame, so as to admit of the bar L being raised or lowered, as required, to cause the runners to make a deeper or shallower furrow.
The bar L is connected by a link, a, with a central lever, S, said lever being pivoted at its front end to a standard or post, b, and the rear end provided on one side with a staple, (I, which passes over an upright standard, 1, on the rear portion of the frame. The standard T is perforated, and by means of a pin, h, passed through either of the perforations in the standard, the lever S can be held at any elevation desired, so as to raise or lower the bar L with the corn-boxes, conductors, and
runners.
I am aware that an eccentric loosely mounted upon the main axle of a corn-planter, and hav ing markers connected therewith, and also a seed-slide operated through the medium of a slotted bent lever and pitman from an eccentric mounted on a revolving shaft, receiving its motion from a gear-wheel mounted thereon, and meshing with a gear-wheel mounted on the hub of a ground-wheel, are old, and such arrangements of mechanism I distinctly disclaim as my invention; but,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new is In a corn-planting machine, the combination of the shaft 0, carrying the eccentric F, adapted to be thrown in and out of gear at will, the eccentric-rod Gr, crank-arm H, and connecting'rod I, with the lever S, having its fulcrum at the upper end of the standard I), and connected with the feedsupporting bar L, carrying the hoppers K K and feedslide J, to the ends of which the seed-tubes and markers R are attached, and the standard T, having pins h, whereby the markers, seedtubes, and hoppers may be simultaneously and relatively adjusted, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES P. R. MANN.
