This invention relates to paper novelties useful as toys, party favors, advertising displays and the like.

The primary object of the invention is to supply the novelty in the form of a fiat blank and to score or otherwise define fold lines in the blank along which it may be folded to provide a novelty of predetermined configuration.

Other objects are to provide a self-supporting novelty; to enable the novelty to be rocked or otherwise moved and thereby enhance the attractiveness and entertainment value thereof; and to provide a novel party novelty which may be inexpensively manufactured and easily handled and assembled. I

A selected embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 is a plan view of the blank;

Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the partially assembled novelty; and

Fig. 3 is a front perspective view of the completely assembled novelty.

The preferred form of my invention shown in the accompanying drawing embodies a blank 4 which includes a front section 5, a rear section 6 and an intermediate end section I, a fold line 8 being scored or otherwise defined in the blank intermediate the sections 5 and I while a fold line 9 is scored or otherwise defined in the blank intermediate the sections 6 and I.

The lower outwardly disposed edge ll] of the section 5 is rounded on a smooth arc and the outwardly disposed edge II of the section 6 is similarly rounded on an identical arc and the utility of these rounded edges will be explained presently.

A tab I2 is provided on the edge of the section 6 opposite the edge I I and this tab is located near the outer free end of said section. A slot I3 is formed in the section 5 in spaced relation with the edge I and near the forward edge of said section. When the blank is folded in assembling the novelty the tab I2 is inserted in the slot I3.

A fold line I4 is scored or otherwise formed on the section to define the front edge of this section. Preferably the blank is so shaped that a substantially triangular section I5 is provided forwardly of the fold line l4. A tab I6 projects outwardly from the base of the triangular section [5 and when the blank is folded to assemble the novelty the tab I6 is passed through the slot I'I located in the section 5 rearwardly of and below the slot I3.

That part of the section 5, above the termination of the fold line I4 and the hypotenuse of the triangular section I5, which part is indicated by I3, is shaped to simulate a mast and a section I9 projects forwardly therefrom which is preferably shaped to simulate a pennant. The triangular section I5 is adapted to simulate a sail when it is folded over the section 5, as will be explained more fully presently. In order to increase the entertainment value of the novelty the section ti preferably includes an upwardly projecting portion shaped to simulate the upper part of a human figure wearing a cap and suitable printing is provided thereon to complete this simulation and a continuation of this printing is printed or otherwise provided on the section 5. In the present instance where a boat is being simulated the simulated figure is shown as grasping a wheel. The simulation of a boat is also enhanced by printing or otherwise forming on the face of the lower part of the section 5 and the section I representations of water.

The blank 4 is shipped and handled fiat, as shown in Fig. 1, and when it is desired to assemble the novelty the blank is folded along the fold lines 8 and 9. This folding is preferably such that the section I extends rearwardly substantially at right angles from the lower part of the section 5 and the section 5 is preferably folded to extend at right angles to the section 1 in parallel relation with the lower part of thesection 5 so that the sections will be arranged as shown in Fig. 2. At this time the sections 8 and 5 are in parallel relation. The sections '3 and 5 are then somewhat inclined relative to one another so that the tab l2 may be inserted into the slot I3. The resulting inclination of the sections 6 and I relative to each other increases the stability of the novelty and insures that it will be self-supporting.

When the tab I2 is inserted into the slot I3 the edges I0 and II are concentric and afford a rounded base for the novelty on which it may be rocked to thereby simulate the motion of a boat.

Next the section I5 is folded relative to the section 5 along the fold line I4. The portions- 2| and 22 of the base edge of the section I5 are engaged with the front of the section 5 when the tab I6 is inserted into the slot IT. This engagement of these edges 20 and 2| and the connection of the section I5 to the section 5 along the fold line I4 and the disposition of the slot I! which is disposed closer to the fold line I4 than is the tab I6 causes the section l5 to bow or bulge outwardly whereby it simulates a sail. The interconnection of the sections 5 and I5 and the bulging of the section I5 defines a pocket and by blowing into this pocket gently the novelty may be caused to rock on the edges l and l I.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a paper novelty which may be shipped and handled as a fiat blank but which may be expeditiously assembled into a three dimension self-supporting paper novelty useful as a party favor, toy, advertising display or the like. I have shown the novelty as simulating a boat on water with a caricaturized human figure steering it, but it is to be understood that the novelty could be made to simulate other things without departing from the purview of my invention. The rounded bottom edges of the novelty enable it to be rocked and the part which in the present instance simulates a sail provides a pocket which, when air is blown thereinto gently, causes the novelty to rock on its rounded edges. The blanks need be printed, painted or otherwise arranged on face only whereby economical manufacture is realized. It is also to be understood that foil or sheet metal might be used instead of paper or like material described above.

It is to be understood that I have illustrated and described a selected embodiment of my invention which is capable of variation and modification and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall within the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. A paper novelty including sections interconnected by an intermediate section along converging fold lines at an edge of each of said interconnected sections whereby said interconnected sections may be folded along said lines to dispose said interconnected sections in substantially parallel relation, one of said interconnected sections having a slot therein, the other of said interconnected sections including a tab insertable through said slot to interconnect said interconnected sections remote from said intermediate section and incline said interconnected sections relative to each other transversely and toward the slot and tab respectively and also incline said interconnected sections relative to each other longitudinally and away from said intermediate section, a further section joined along a fold line to one of said interconnected sections whereby said further section may be folded along said fold line upon said one interconnected section, said further section including a tab at a free edge thereof and said one interconnected section having a slot therein through which said tab may be inserted to interconnect the free edge of said further section with said one interconnected section, and means on said interconnected sections to provide a rocking movement of said novelty when air is blown thereagainst.

A paper novelty including sections interconnected along fold lines whereby said sections may be folded along said lines to dispose at least two of said sections in substantially parallel relation, one of said substantially parallel sections having a slot therein, the other of said substantially parallel sections including a part located near a free edge thereof and insertable through said slot to interconnect the free edges of said substantially parallel sections and incline said sections relative to each other transversely to thereby render said novelty self-supporting when rested on the outwardly disposed edges of said substantially parallel sections, one of said substantially parallel sections including a part extending above the other of said substantially parallel sections, a substantially triangular section connected to said upwardly extending part along a fold line, said part having a slot therein, said substantially triangular section having a tab thereon insertable through said last named slot to have the edges thereof adjacent said tab engaged with said part, the slot in said part being located closer to the last named fold line than said tab whereby said triangularly shaped section is bowed outwardly away from said part when said tab is inserted in the slot in said part.

A paper novelty including sections interconnected along fold lines whereby said sections may be folded along said lines to dispose at least two of said sections in substantially parallel relation, one of said substantially parallel sections having a slot therein, the other of said substantially parallel sections including a part located near a free edge thereof and insertable through said slot to interconnect the free edges of said substantially parallel sections and incline said r sections relative to each other transversely to thereby render said novelty self-supporting when rested on the outwardly disposed edges of said substantially parallel sections, one of said sub stantially parallel sections including a part extending above the other of said substantially parallel sections, a substantially triangular section connected to said upwardly extending part along a fold line, said part having a slot therein, said substantially triangular section having a tab thereon insertable through said last named slot to have the edges thereof adjacent said tab engaged with said part, the slot in said part being located closer to the last named fold line than said tab whereby said triangularly shaped section is bowed outwardly away from said part when said tab is inserted in the slot in said part, the outward bow of said substantially triangular section cooperating with said part to provide a pocket, the outwardly disposed edges of said substantially parallel sections being rounded whereby when the novelty is rested on said edges and air is blown gently into said pocket said novelty may be caused to rock on said edges.
