7 Claims.
This invention relates to a sharpening device and more particularly to a hand operated sharpening device which may be used to sharpen the underedge trimmer blades used with sewing machines for the purpose of trimming the edge of the lower of the superposed plies of material being sewed.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, manually operable device for quickly sharpening the cutting edge of an underedge trimmer blade, the device embodying several adjustments by means of which the path of movement of the sharpening member may be adjusted so as to cause said member to accurately and uniformly sharpen the cutting edge. A further object of the invention is to provide a sharpening member which is reciprocable through a guide mounted for universal movement, the guide permitting angular adjustment of the sharpening member about an axis parallel to its length. A still further object of the invention is to provide a sharpening device for sharpening under-edge trimmer blades which may be successfully used by a person having no more than ordinary common skill in the use of sharpening implements.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention comprises the devices, combinations, and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings of a preferred embodiment of the invention, from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.

Figure l is a top plan view of the blade-sharpening device, showing a blade held in the supporting clamp and the sharpening stone in its operative position.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially through the center of the guide for the sharpening element.
Figure 3 is a central vertical section taken through the device, the sharpening element and its holder being shown in elevation.
Figure 4 is a vertical cross-section taken substantially along the line 4 4, of Figure l.
In the embodiment illustrated this device comprises a rectangularly shaped bed i formed with an upstanding centrally apertured boss l i. Fitted into the aperture in the boss is a sleeve i2 formed with a groove i3 which receives one end of an adjusting screw I4. The groove i3 is larger than the end of the screw I4 and this construc- (Ci. 5l-69) tion permits the sleeve l2 to be adjusted vertically.
Journaled for turning movement about a` vertical axis in the sleeve i2 is a shouldered screw i5 threaded into the U-shaped bracket it and between the upstanding arms of the bracket there is pivotally mounted on the pivotal screws ii and i8 a collar i9 which is adapted to be turned about its horizontal axis. The collar I9 encircles a guide member having a groove 2l in its outer periphery and into which the ends of the screws il and it extend. The thumb-screw it is adapted to engage the walls of the groove 2i to prevent turning of the guide E@ relative to the collar i9. This construction permits the guide to be rotated relative to the collar for the purpose of adjustment and provides means for locking the guide in any adjusted position.
The sharpening member comprises a rectangularly shaped. rod 22 provided with a handle 23 .and lugs having bifurcated ends which extend over the ends of the triangularly shaped sharpening stone 2t. The lugs 2d are removably fixed to the rod by the screws 2S and pins 2l.
ri'he edge of the base opposite the boss Ii is ormed with an upstanding portion having a horizontally disposed groove E@ (Fig. 3) in its top which receives the clamp or holder for the trimmer-blade. The clamp is formed of two parallel fiat metal bars all, 32 (Fig. e) held together at one end by the shouldered screw 33 and at the other end a thumb-screw The trim ner blade 35 is clamped between the ends of the bars nearest the thumb-screw 35i and is held in its correct position by the studs St carried by the bar 32. it is to be understood that the shouldered screw has a loose nt with the bar 3i and therefore the clamping ends of the bars 3i and Si? are separated by the spring 3l when the thumb-screw 3d is loosened.
To position the blades at the correct angle relative to the guide for the sharpening member an upstanding post 35i is formed at one corner of the base i@ and mounted in the post are stops 39 and iii (Fig. i) which are adapted to be held in their adjusted positions by the screws GI and 42, respectively. These stops are used separately depending upon the shape of the blade which is to be sharpened.
To sharpen a blade is first clamped in the blade-holder by the thumb-screw 34 and the holder is placed in the groove 9 on top of the 11p-standing portion The holder is then moved longitudinally ci the groove until the end of the blade 35 abuts the end of one ofthe adjustable stops 39 or 40. The sharpening member is then placed on the gauge rest 43 formed on the upstanding portion 28, the screw I8 is loosened and the sharpening member is turned about its longitudinal axis until the lower side of the stone lies at on the upper surface of the gauge rest 43. The screw I8 is then tightened in order to hold the sharpening device in its correct position. The screw I4 may be loosened and, the sleeve raised or lowered to adjust the guide to thedesired height. The sharpening member is then swung to the position shown in Fig 1 and freciprocated by means of the handle 23 which is grasped in the hand of the operator and moved back and forth in a manner readily understood. It will be observed that the support for the guide permits the sharpening member to be for movement about a vertical axis, a supporting element pivotally secured to said bracket for movement about a horizontal axis, a guide-member provided with an opening and means for adjustably supporting 'said guide-member in said supporting element for movement about the longitudinal axis of said., opening and relativeto said supporting element..
4. A sharpening device of the class described comprising, a base formed with an upstanding portion at one edge thereof [and having a groove in its top, a blade-holderin said groove, an adjustable stop carried by said bed and against which' one end of a blade isadapted to abut, a `U-shaped bracket mounted y`on said base for movement about a vertical axis,"za supporting element pivotally secured to said bracket for moveswung in both the horizontaland-vertieal-planesmrent aboutfla lhorizontal axis, a guide-member and is, in effect, a universal joint. It will also be observed that three adjustments may be made; rst, the guide carrier may ber raised or lowered; second, the sharpening memberI may be adjusted about its horizontal axis and third, the position of the trimmer blade may be determined by the adjustable stops 39 or 45. This construction enables the guide tc be accurately adjusted to guide the sharpening stone 25 at the correct angle relative to the cutting edge of the trimmer blade, which is at the foot of the upstanding portion 35' of the blade 35, and provides means for uniformly sharpening the edge when used by operators having no particular skill in the Yuse of sharpening implements.
From the foregoing description it will'be obvious that theelements employed are susceptible of material variations. The privilege is therefore reserved of resorting to all such legitimate changes therein'as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus set forth the nature of our'invention, what we claim as new and desire to Vsecure by Letters Patent is:- u

A sharpening device ofthe cl'assfdscibed comprising, a base, a blade-holder carried by said base, a support on said base, a guide pivotally mounted on lsaid support, a rod extending through said guide and carrying a sharpening stone, said guide and rodbeing shaped so as to prevent the rod and guide from turning relative to veach other, means for adjustably supporting said guide in said support for movement about the longitudinal axis of said rod and clamping means for holding s-aidguide in 'its adjusted position.
2. A sharpening device of the class described comprising, a base, a blade-holding clamp carried by said base, an adjustable stop carried by said base and against which the blade is adapted to abut to position the latter, a support pivotally mounted on saidrbase for movement about horizontal and vertical axes, a guide-member, a rod carrying a sharpening stone and extending through an opening in said guide, said opening and rod being constructed to prevent turning movement relative to each other, means for adjustably supporting said guide-member in said support for movement about the longitudinal axis of `said rod, clamping means for holding said guide-member in its adjusted position, and a handle on said rod by which it may be moved A back and forth through the opening in said guide.
