IMPROVEMENT IN BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,585, dated February 25, 1879; application filed January 4, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LWHEELER BEECHER, of WVestville, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Basket; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists, mainly, in the combination, with the ordinary lateral pieces or strips which form the bottom and sides of a flat sided basket, of certain longitudinal strips, which are crossed in a diagonal direction to form the ends of the basket.
It consists, further, in certain details of construction, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a topplan view of the parts of my basket as united in the flat, the side portions being bent up for the purpose of distinguishing them more clearly than otherwise from the bottom portions; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the basket complete; Figs. 3 and at, plan views of baskets in the fiat without the bands, which are provided respectively with three and four longitudinal strips.
To enable others skilled in the art to make my improved basket, I will now proceed to fully describe the same.
A A, Fig. 1, represent the ordinary lateral strips or pieces, of any proper number, by means of which the bottom and sides of a fiatsided basket are formed, these being scored and bent upon the lines a a, in the manner well understood.
B B represent the longitudinal strips, two or more in number, crossed in a diagonal direction, as shown in Fig. 1, by means of which the bottom is re-enforced and the ends formed, these strips also being scored and bent upon the lines D b in the manner well understood.
C C represent the inner bands and D D the outer bands, both of which usually exceed in length the longitudinal strips B of the basket, as shown.
The manner of making the basket is substantially as follows: A proper number of the scored, lateral, and longitudinal strips having been taken, with two pairs of bands, the same otherwise fastening the overlapping ends of the inner and outer bands to the tops of the end pieces, which lie between them, as shown in Fig. 2.
Some of the advantages of this special construction are as follows: By means of the longitudinal strips the strength of the bottom is largely increased, the crossing of the same adapting the latter to resist strain in both a lateral and a longitudinal direction. By means of these strips also ends of great strength are obtained, the crossing of the same causing the latter, in connection with the bands, to assume the form of an arch. These arched ends also, in connection with the flat sides, serve to improve materially the appearance of the basket as a whole. The inner and outer bands, being each overlapped at the ends, serve to give additional strength to this part.
Three longitudinal strips may be employed, as shown in Fig. 3, two diagonally-crossed strips being located below the bottom of the basket and one straight strip above the basket, this being the preferred form.
Four longitudinal strips may be employed, as shown in Fig. 4. two diagonally-crossed strips being located below the other part of the bottom of the basket and two above.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the substantially parallel lateral pieces A, the longitudinal pieces B, diagonally crossed, as and for the purpose described.
2. The basket described, having the parallel lateral pieces A, the longitudinal pieces diagonally crossed, and the bands having the overlapping ends, as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 1st day of January, 1879.
L. WHEELER BEECHER.
