` This invention relates to `new and useful improvements in a nicotine separating cool smoke pipe stem.
`'I'he invention'has for an object the construction of a pipe Vstem which is characterized by a liquid collecting passage extending from its inner end: to an intermediate point and there joining 1with 4a vent passage terminating in the top side `of the pipe stem, said vent passagebeing associated with a smoke passage extending from the lnear end of the stem to its outer end and located above the liquid collecting passage. When the pipe stem is thus constructed it is possible to draw smoke through the smoke passage without being annoyed with the simultaneous passage of the juices from the tobacco. Furthermore, it is possible to draw in air which mixes with the smoke so as to cool the smoke.
Still further the invention embodies an arrangement in which ones finger may control the amount of air passing through the vent opening and so control the temperature of the smoke drawn through the smoking passage.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a means for closing the vent to Various degrees and so eliminate the necessity of manually holding the vent closed with ones finger.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The smoke pipe stem, according to this invention, comprises material in the form of a stem I 0 having a mouthpiece portion Ill]a at its outer end, and a reduced portion Ib at its inner end for engaging into an opening in a pipe bowl such as the bowl I l. The pipe stem II] has a liquid collecting passage I2 extending from its inner end to an intermediate point I2 and there joining with a vent passage I3 terminating in the top side of the pipe stem. 'Ihe pipe stem also has a smoke passage I4 extending from its inner end to its outer end and located above said liquid collecting passage and extending through said vent passage I3.
The operation of the device is as follows:-
The pipe is supported in ones mouth by engagingv the mouthpiece between ones teeth. When the smoker draws in, the smoke from the 5 tobacco will pass through the passage I4 into the smokers mouth. If there is any juice, some of the juices from the tobacco will collect in the bottom of the bowl and pass directly into the liquid collecting passage I2. Other of the juices will pass through the inner end portion of the smoke passage I4 until they reach the vent passage I3 and then will move down the vent passage and collect in the liquid collecting passage I2. Air from the exterior will enter the vent passage I3 and temper the temperature of the smoke.
The smoker may control the amount of air entering the passage I3 merely by holding a finger completely or partially over the outer end 20 of the vent opening, when the light in the pipe bowl is low, to start burning the tobacco.
The pipe is provided with an arrangement for mechanically controlling the air passing through the vent passage I3. The arrangement comprises a shutter element I6 slidably mounted in a passage Il formed in the pipe stem. The shutter I G connects with a stem I6a which passes through a fixedly mounted bearing disc I8 mounted in the passage I'I. A collar I9 is xed on the stem 16a. 30 A spring 20 is arranged coaxially on the stem |69' and acts between the collar I9 and the disc I8 for normally urging the stem I6a into an extended position. The extremity of the stem Isa, indicated by the numeral |6113, extends from the 35 inner shoulder of the stem I0, which shoulder is produced by the reduced portion IIlb, and extends into a cam shaped recess 2I formed in the adjacent shoulder of the pipe bowl. Normally, the parts are in the position shown in the figures of the drawing. The passage I3 is then unrestricted.
If it is desired to partially close the passage I3 it is merely necessary to slightly turn the bowl of the pipe relative to the stem. The cam shaped recess ZI will then press in the stem Ilia against the extending action of the spring 20 and the shutter I6 will extend partially or completely across the vent passage I3, depending merely upon the relative position` of the cam recess 2| and the extended end Iiiea of the stem.
It is to be understood that the stem may be moulded, hand curved and the holes drilled, or made in any other suitable manner with one or more pieces of suitable material.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to allchanges and modications coming Within the scope of the invention as deined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent isz- 1. A nicotine separating cool smoke pipe stem, comprising material in the form of a pipe stem `and having a mouthpiece portion at its outer end and a reduced portion at its inner end for engaging into an opening in a pipe bowl, said pipe' stem having a liquid collecting passage extending from its inner end to an intermediate point of said stem and there joining with a vent passage terminating in the top side of said pipe stem, said pipe stem also having a smoke passageex-tending from its inner end to its outer end` and located above said liquid collecting passage and extend- 4ing through saidvent passage, and mechanical means for partially or completely closing said vent passage, comprising a Vshutter element in a passage transversely across thev vent passage, a stem connected with the shutter element and having an extended end engaging a cam recess in a pipe bowl for said stem, a pipe bowl for said stem having said recess, and resilient means urging s'aid stem against said cam recess.
2. A nicotine separating cool smoke pipe stem,
comprising material in the form of a pipe stem having one of its ends reduced forming a shoulder portion, said pipe stem having a liquid collecting passage extending from its inner end to an intermediate point of said stem and there joining with a vent passage in the top side of said pipe stern, said pipe stem also having a smoke passage extending from its inner end to its outer end and located above said liquid passage and extending through said vent passage, a pipe bowl for said stem having an opening engaging said reduced end and a cam recess formed in the face of said pipe bowl abutting said shoulder portion, a shutter element slidably mounted in a passage f ormed transversely across the vent passage, a stem formed on said shutter element and having an extended end engaging said cam recess, a
bearing disc xedly mounted in the passage housing said stemvand having an opening through which said stem passes, a collar formed on said stemlon the side of said disc opposite said shutter element, and a spring on said stem operating between said' disc and said collar to normally urge the extended end of said stem against said cam recesses, whereby said pipe bowl may be turned slightly with relation to said stem to cause said extended end to be forced inward against the normal action of said spring to force said shutter element across the vent passage to partially or entirely close said vent passage.
