2 Claims. (01. 2-120) The object of this invention is to devise a novel construction and arrangement of a garment, wherein the sleeves may be readily removed or attached to the body portion of the garment.

The garment may beof any desired type having sleeves, for example, jackets, sweaters, jumpers, unionalls, ski suits, children's play suits and other garments of these general types.

I A further object of the invention is to devise a construction in whichthe attaching means will be concealed when the sleeves are attached, and when the sleeves are removed a smooth surface is provided at the shoulder portion of the garment which surrounds the arm pit. A sliding fastener type of attaching means is employed, one tape of which is secured to the sleeve and the other to the arm pit portion of the garment. The sliding fastener is preferably on the 'sleeve but may be on the body portion of the garment if desired. .One'tape is secured to the part which carries it so that its fastening elements project beyond the outer line of such part, while the other tape is inset so that its fastening elements will be inset within the outer line of its part. The sliding fastener is preferably concealed by a flap which may be secured to either the body of the garment or the sleeves.

With the above and other objects in view as will hereinafter more clearly appear, my invention comprehends a novel garment having a novel construction and arrangement of means for de tachably connecting the sleeves thereto.

Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter moreclearly appear in' the detailed description and the appended claims. For the purpose of illustrating the invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing typical embodiments of it, which, in practice, will give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, how- 0 ever, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be varlo'usly arranged and organized and my invention is not limited to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein set forth. v

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a garment embodying my invention.

Figure 2 is a modified form in which the fastening elements for the body portion'project beyond the arm hole and the fastening elements on the sleeve are inset.

Referring to the drawing:--

' I designates a garment of any desired type having a body portion 2 and a detachable sleeve 3.

The body portion 2 has the material at the marginal portion of the arm hole folded inwardly and secured in position by a line of stitching 4 which also passes through a tape 5 which carries a set of fastening elements 6. As shown in Figure 1, the fastening elements 8 are inset or in other words are'positloned inwardly of the edge ofthe arm hole. The free ends of the tape are secured at the lower portion of the arm hole so that a continuous line of fastening elements surrounds the arm hole on the inner face of its marginal portion. In order to impart a finished appearance to the garment when the sleeve is detached, a line of stitching I is formed close to the edge of the arm hole.

The sleeve 3, in Figure 1, has the marginal portion at its upper end folded inwardly and a line of stitching I secures the fold in position and also a tape 9 which carries a set of fastening elements It on which a locking and unlocking sliding member I I is mounted.- The tape 9 is secured in such a manner that the fastening elements It project beyond the edge of the upper sleeve opening and the free ends of the tape are juxtaposed I vat the lower portion of the sleeve opening so that the proper registry is provided for the two sets of fastener elements.

It will be clear from the foregoing description that when the sleeve is attached the seam of the fastener will be concealed when a sleeve is attached to the body portion of the garment.

The locking and unlocking slide member II is preferably carried by the sleeve but it may be carried by the fastening elements on the body portion if desired, as shown in Figure 2.

In Figure 2, the tapes are secured in such a manner that the fastening elements on the body portion instead of being inset, project beyond the edge of the arm hole, and the fastening elements cover the inside of the seam and such flap is secured in place by the line of stitching 8 as shown in Figure 6, so that it is preferably carried by the sleeve which is the removable portion of the garment. I

As shown in Figure 8, the free ends of the tapes preferably overlap and are stitched to the part which carries them. This assures the proper spacing between thei'astening elements at the free ends of a tape.

The operation of a slide fastener is now well understood. When the slide member is drawn forwardly the sleeve is attached .to the body portion and when drawn rearwardly to its full length of travel, the sleeve is detached so that the garment presents the appearance of a sleeveless jacket or body garment. The sleeve may be removed and assembled without removing the garment from the wearer.

The locking and unlocking slide is at the lower end of the arm hole so that it will not interfere in'any way with the use of the arm, and it is preferably mounted on the sleeve so that it is removable with the sleeve.

In Figure 5, the fastening elements are at the edges, so that when the slide member is moved to close the scam, the adjacent edges of the marginal portions of the sleeve and arm hole are close together to substantially conceal the seam ,as shown. more clearly in Figure 9.

It will thus be apparent that, in all of the embodiments of my invention, the locking and unlocking member of the sliding fastener may have its handle portion accessible for operation from the inside or outside of the garment.

In accordance .with this invention the sleeves when attached, provide the same protection to the wearer as if theywere permanently fixed in place, and when the sleeves are. removed, a sleeveless Jacket or body garment is provided so that the wearer has full freedom of movement of his armsand a garment is provided which has a dual .use. For example, the sleeves can be sold either with or separately from the body portion and they may be of a contrasting color or of the same or different material, or of different quality or weight from that of the body portion. This enables one to purchase a main garment without sleeves if desired, and then sleevesmay be obtained later when desired to change'the general appearance and utilityof the garment.

Having thus described'my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

'1'. A garment including a body portion, a detachable sleeve and a sliding fastener, the sleeve at its attaching edge and the body portion at the inner edge portion of the arm hole each having a set of fastener elements extending throughout the length of such edges to provide for the complete detachment of the sleeve from the body portion, the sleeve having its fastening elements projectingfrom the sleeve attaching edge, the set of fastening elements for the arm hole being inset from the edge of the arm hole opening a distance greater than the said projection of the sleeve fastener elements, whereby said elements when in locked condition are concealed from view, and a locking and unlocking slide cooperating with said elements.

2. A garment including a body portion, a detachable sleeve anda sliding fastener, the sleeve at its attaching edge and the body portion at the inner edge portion of the arm hole each having a set of fastener elements extending throughout the length of such edges to provide for the complete detachment of the sleeve from the body portion, the sleeve having its fastening elements projecting from the sleeve attaching edge, the set of fastening elements for the arm hole being inset from the edge of the arm hole opening a distance greater than the said projection of the sleeve fastener elements, whereby said elements when in locked condition are; concealed from view, and a locking and unlocking "slide cooperating with said elements, carried by the sleeve attaching elements, and removable as a unit of structure with the sleeve. l
