(01. 206-59) I The 'present'invention relates to rolls of adhesive strip.
f-Rolls of adhesive strip consisting of a base of cellulose hydrate in sheet form, or other cellulose .derivative sheets more or less sensitive ,to moisture, such as, for example, acetyl'c'ellulose, and a plastic adhesive coating adapted to remain constantly sticky, such as, for example, a coating containing caoutchouc, are known. Adhesive strips of this kind are manufactured in transparent, non-transparent, colourless and coloured form. The strips which are marketed in diiferent widths and in comparatively long lengths are wound in numerous layers around a rimless core which is generally hollow and usually consists of cardboard. The individual layers are wound tightly upon one another in order to ensure that the strip may be satisfactorily drawn oil and that the roll may present a neat appearance. The known tightly wound rolls of relatively narrow adhesive strip exhibit, however, the defect that when they are stored for a considerable time they become displaced in'parts laterally away from the core so that the end faces of the roll are no longer flat but are of an irregular funnel-like shape. The present invention relates to means suitable for avoiding this disadvantage.
We have found that the aforesaid deformation which renders the rolls unsuitable for use in unrolling apparatus and, moreover, causes an unattractive appearance can be avoided by completely covering up the 'end faces of the rolls to the exclusion of air with protecting disks bearing tightly on the end faces andmade of mate rial which is substantially impermeable to atmospheric moisture. The protecting disks which are of substantially the same size as the sides of the roll consist of thin foil material, which, in
addition to possessing impermeability to moisture, is also as tough and flexible as possible and is of such a nature that no fibres can be detached from its surfaces, inasmuch as otherwise a satisfactory complete withdrawal of the protecting foils from the somewhat adhesive end faces of the roll would no longer be possible. Amongst other materials aluminium foils of small thickness (about .05 of a millimetre) or other foils having a metallic surface are appropriate.
- It is, however, most advantageous to employ celwith other materialor sheets of paper provided with a moistureproof coating of lacquer or varnish. v

The protecting disks may be very thin, for example only .02 to .03 mm. in thickness, and may be in the form of circular foils'which, if desired, may be stamped out with an opening corresponding to that of the core of the roll, and which preferably only project slightly beyond the end surfaces of the roll of adhesive strip proper. They are brought into as intimate contact as possible with the said end surfaces by pressi them thereonto. The small degree of adherence exhibited by the roll at the end surfaces generally suilices for causing the protecting foils to adhere.
The result obtained by the use of the protecting foils is not limited only to the protection of the rolls from lateral displacement during the period of storage, inasmuch as the said foils also prevent contamination which could otherwise easily occur in consequence of the slight adhesiveness at the end surfaces, and also facilitates the packing of therolls.
It has also been found that the effect of the moistureproof closure obtained by means of the protecting foils can be improved by providing that the core upon which the adhesive strip is the core, or again by the employment of a core which is made of a material which is impermeable to moisture.
We claim:
1. A roll of adhesive strip, comprising a strip of cellulose derivative sensitive to moisture coated with plastic adhesive material and wound in layers, the strip being relatively narrow and the layers being relatively numerous so that the roll is subject to deformation under the influence of the moisture in air, and thin flexiblt numerous so that the roll is subject to deformation under the influence oi the moisture in air. and thin flexible detachable foil disks of substantially the same size as the sides of the roll adhering to the edges of said layers and completely covering the same to the exclusion of air,
which disks have a surface free from flbres and are substantially impermeable to moisture.
3. A roll of adhesive strip, comprising a core, a strip of cellulose hydrate coated with plastic adhesive material and wound in layers around the core, the strip being relatively narrow and the layers being relatively numerous so that the roll is subject to deformation under the influence of the moisture in air, and thin flexible detachable foil disks of substantially the same size as the sides 01' the roll adhering to the edges of said layers and completely covering the'sam'e to the exclusion of air, which disks have a surface free from fibres and are substantially impermeable to moisture.
4. A roll of adhesive strip, comprising a core,
a strip of cellulose hydrate coated with plastic adhesive material and wound in layers around the core. the strip being relatively narrow and the layers being relatively numerous so that the roll is subject to deformation under the influence oi the moisture in air, and thin detachable foil disks oi substantially the same size as the sides .5
of the roll adhering to the edges of said layers and completely covering the same to the exclusion of air, which disks consist of sheet cellulose hydrate coated with a moisture-proof varnish. 5. A roll of adhesive strip. comprising a core, a strip of cellulose hydrate coated with plastic adhesive material and wound in layers around the core, the strip being relatively narrow and the layers being relatively numerous so that the roll is subject to deformation under the influence oi the moisture in air, and thin detachable metal toil disks of substantially the same size as the sides of the roll adhering to the edges of said layers and completely covering the same to the exclusion 01' air.
6. A roll of adhesive strip, comprising a core, a strip of cellulose hydrate coated with plastic adhesive material and wound in layers around the core, the strip being relatively narrow and the layers being relatively numerous so that the roll is subject to deformation under the influence of the moisture in air, and thin detachable metal foil disks of substantially the same size as the sides of the roll adhering to the edges of said 30 layers and completely covering the same to the exclusion 01' air, which disks are laminated with other material.
