The invention pertains to dump vehicles for operation on rails or roadways and particularly to the mechanism employed to control a lading discharging door as the body of the vehicle moves in dumping. Vehicles of the character hereinafter described have a body suitably mounted upon a suitable underframe, a door forming a wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof to open downwardly and outwardly to discharge the lading as the body moves in dumping. The vehicle shown is equipped for operation on rails and is of the type known as end dump because the body pivots about one end of the underframe. It will be understood, however, that the body may be mounted to tilt about a side of the underframe by providing a transverse pivot and mounting the door mechanism at the side of the underframe instead of at the end thereof. The door mechanism is disposed beneath the body and comprises a toggle link connection between the vehicle and door and an abutment on the vehicle, the latter being disposed in the path of movement of the toggle which breaks upwardly so as to control the movements of the door upon its hinged connection to the body by movement of the body relative to the underframe.
An object of the invention is to provide a `mechanism to control the door during all positions of bOdy.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door mechanism which limits the opening of the door by the tilting of the body and positively closes and locks the door as the body is righted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door mechanism which permits the arresting of the opening movement of the door while the body continues to fully tilted position, thereby preventing injury to the vehicle door or mechanism, should the door strike an obstruction during the tilting of the body.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door mechanism which will permit the door to remain closed during the tilting of the body,
4'5 thereby preventing injury to the door and lading should the door adhere to the lading or for any other reason fail to open as the body is tilted.
In the drawings forming a part of the speci- 5'0 cation, Fig. 1 shows in elevation a portion of '155 a vehicle equipped with a modification of the (Cl. U15-276) invention; Fig. 5 shows the vehicle of Fig. 4 with the body in tilted position; Fig. 6 is a section taken on lines 6-6 of Fig. 4; Fig. 7 shows a modification in the toggle latching means of Figs. 1 and 4; Fig. 8 is a section through the abutment 5 and toggle on lines 8--8 of Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, reference character I indicates a vehicle body, a portion of which is shown in Fig. 1 and supported on a suitable underframe 2 and having a piv- 10 otal connection 3 to the underframe. This pivotal connection may form a part of the body support in any of the well-known constructions of the prior art or may be separate therefrom as shown in the drawings. Disposed beneath 15 each end of the underframe are suitable running gear to adapt the vehicle for movement upon roads and roadways. The body is comprised of side walls 4, end walls 5 and floor 6, which latter overhangs one end of the underframe. end wall is a door hinged adjacent the floor of the body to open outwardly and downwardly as the body is tilted and. is disposed at an obtuse angle thereto when in closed position for reasons which will hereinafter become apparent. 25 Depending from the door is an arm or door stake l which preferably forms a part of the hinge connection 8 between the door and the body.
The door control mechanism toggle comprises an outer link 9 pivotally connected to the door 30 arm "I by means of the pin Ill, an inner link II pivotally connected by means of the pin I2 to a bracket I3 secured to the underframe 2, and a pin 20 connecting the free ends of the links. Securing the toggle against breaking downward 35 is the latch I4 mounted on the body or there may be provided interengaging shoulders I5 and I6 on the links 9 and II, respectively, as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. The abutment forming part of the door mechanism comprises a bracket 40 I'I secured to the underframe between the toggle link II and the body and has a roller I8 secured on one end thereof in spaced relation to the underframe and in the path of the link II.
The operation of the above described meohanism is as follows: assuming the body to be in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and to be moved to fully tilted position as shown in Fig. 2, a suitable body tilting means (not shown) which is mounted on the underframe, tilts the body I about the end of the underframe 2 on its pivotal connection 3. The door 6, upon movement'of the body, opens by gravity and the weight of lading, causing the arm I and attached link 9 to move inwardly, forcing the link II against 55 the abutment roller I8. By reason of its attachment to the body the inner link Il moves downwardly so that the link II rotates in a counter-clock-wise direction and moves upon the roller I8' to limit the opening movement of the door by the movement of the body relative to the underframe. When the body is righted the pin I2 and bracket I3 secured to the body move upwardly and outwardly therewith and at the same time the door, by reason of its connection to the body, moves bodily inwardly and upwardly. Since the inward and upward movement of the inner link II is limited by engagement with the abutment roller I8, the outer link 9 is placed in compression, causing the door to turn to closed position upon the hinged connection 8.
Due to wear in the various connections it may so happen that with the door in closed position the toggle would tend to break downwardly. To avoid this, the latch I4 is mounted on the body and engages the inner link II to prevent clockwise rotation.
In the modication of the latching means shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, the engagement between the shoulders I5 and I6, on their respective links 9 and II, prevents downward movement of the links and limits the breaking of the toggle joint about the pin 2D to a direction upwardly.
As previously described the door 6 is disposed at an obtuse angle to the body when in closed position, the advantages of which are readily apparent upon inspection of the drawings. The door by reason of its weight tends to swing outwardly and downwardly upon its hinge connection to the body and in so doing forces the inner link II against the abutment roller I8, which in turn prevents movement of the door when the body is horizontal upon the underframe, thereby locking the door in closed position during transport of the vehicle, whether the body is lled with lading or is empty.
Referring now to Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings wherein is shown a modification of my invention, the body 5) is supported in stable equilibrium on an underframe 5I having suitably formed running gear 53 at opposite ends thereof, the body comprising side walls 54, end walls 55 and iloor 56, the latter overhanging one end of the underframe, one of the end walls being disposed at an obtuse angle to the oor 5B and being hinged adjacent the edge of the latter to form a door 55 which opens outwardly and downwardly to discharge the contained lading as the body is tilted. Depending from the door and preferably forming a part of the hinge is a door stake or arm 5l which is spaced outwardly from the end of the body.
The door control mechanism comprises an outer link 58 pivotally connected to the door arm by means of the pin 59, an inner link Ell pivotally connected by means of the pin 6I to a bracket 62 secured to the end of the underframe, the free ends of the inner and outer links being connected by the pin B3. Suitably disposed stop shoulders 54 and 65 on the inner and outer links 60 and 58 respectively prevent downward breaking of the toggle upon the pin 66. Secured to the body is a bracket 6l on which is mounted a roller 68, the latter being disposed outwardly of the pivotal connection between the body and underframe. Intermediate the endsl of the inner link 60 a suitably formed portion 'I0 is adapted to engage the abutment roller 68.
By reason of the door 55 being disposed at an obtuse angle to the floor of the body it will be obvious that the weight of the door tends to hold the inner link against the abutment roller. When the body is tilted, by whatever means employed, the door tends to open by reason of its own weight and the weight of the lading, and pivots about its hinge connection to the body to force the portion 'IG of the inner link inwardly over the abutment roller 68. At the same time, the abutment roller 68 by reason of being attached to the body, moves downwardly and inwardly permitting the inner link to move inwardly of the vehicle so that the door swings to open position as the body reaches fully tilted position. When the body is righted, the upward and outward movement of the abutment roller tends to rotate the inner link in a clockwise direction. This movement of the inner link, combining with the upward and inward movement of the hinge connection between the door and body, places the outer link in compression and causes the door to rotate into fully closed position as the body comesto rest upon the underframe.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a. dump vehicle, an underframe, a body supported thereon and projecting outwardly beyond an edge of the underframe, a door forming a wall of the body, a pivotal connection between the body and underframe, a jointed link connection between the door and body and disposed wholly outward of said pivotal connection, and an abutment mounted on the underframe beneath the body and in the path of the said link connection.
2. In a dump vehicle, in combination, an underframe, a body, a pivotal connection between the body and underframe, a door forming a wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof to overhang the underframe outwardly of said pivotal connection, a jointed link connecting the door and body and disposed beneath the body, the connection of said link to the body being below the connection to the door and an abutment for said link secured to the underframe between wall of the overhanging body and hinged ad-l jacent thefloor thereof, an abutment on the underframe disposed beneath the overhanging body, a jointed link connection between the door and body, disposed beneath the abutment and connected to the body below the pivotal connection between the latter and the underframe, said link connection being normally held in engagement with the abutment by pressure from the door.

In a dump car having an underframe, a body normally supported in stable equilibrium thereon and overhanging an edge thereof, a door forming a wall of said overhanging body portion and hinged adjacent the floor thereof, means forming a pivotal support for the body in dumping, an inner door controlling link pivotally supported on the body outwardly and below the pivotal body support, an outer door control link pivotally mounted on the door, a pivotal connection between the links and prevented from breaking downward, and a link abutment member xed to the underframe and projecting outwardly and above the pivotal body support, said inner link bearing on the abutment to lock the door in closed position with the body horizontal and to limit'the opening but not the closing of the door as the body moves in dumping.

In a dump car having an underframe, a body mounted thereon for tilting about an edge thereof, a door forming a wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof, the combination, in a mechanism for controlling the movem ments of the door as the body moves in dumping, of a, toggle link having its innerr end pivoted to the vehicle and beneath the floor of the body, its outer end pivoted to the door, an abutment disposed inwardly of and above the inner link of the toggle, said toggle being shaped to move about the abutment as the door opens when the body moves in dumping, and stop shoulders on the toggle preventing a downward movement thereof.
6.`In a vehicle oi the character described, in combination, an underframe, a body, a pivotal connection between the body and underframe adn jacent one edge of the underframe, a door forming a wall of said body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof, a depending member on the door, a door controlling mechanism mounted on the vehicle and connected to the depending member on the door for controlling the opening and forcing the closing of the door as the body moves about its pivotal connection to the underframe, said mechanism comprising an inner link pivoted to the vehicle below the pivotal connection between the body and underframe, an outer link pivoted to the depending door member, a piv otal connection between said links, and an abutment member on the vehicle for engagement with the inner link and disposed beneath the body outward of the connection between body and underframe.

In a dump vehicle, in combination, an underframe, a body having a pivotal connection to the underframe adjacent one edge of the latter, a door forming a wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof outwardly of the connection between body and underframe, a link connected to the door, a link connected to the vehicle outwardly of the underframe and body connection, a pivotal connection between the links, an abutment on the vehicle for engagement with the inner link to maintain the door locked in closed position when the body is in normal upright position upon the underframe.

In a dump vehicle, in combination, an underframe, a body, a pivotal connection between the body and underframe adjacent one edge of the latter', a door forming a wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof, a jointed link connected to the door and to the vehicle outwardly of the pivotal connection between the body and underframe, an abutment on the vehicle disposed in the plane of rotation of the inner portion of said jointed link whereby the change in relative vpositions of the abutment and connection of the jointed link to the vehicle during the tilting and righting of the body will release the door for opening as the body is tilted for dumping and during the righting of the body close the opened door and retain the door in closed position while the body is in normal upright position on the underframe.

In a dump vehicle in combination, an underframe, a body, a pivotal connection between the body and underframe, a door forming a wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof, a jointed link connection between the underframe and door, and an abutment on the body inwardly of the connection between the jointed link and underframe and inthe plane of rotation of said link for controlling movement of the door by movement of the body relative to the underframe.

In a dump vehicle in combination, an underframe, a body, a pivotal connection between the body and underframe, a door forming a wall of said body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof, a jointed link having one end pivoted to the door and the opposite end pivoted to the vehicle outwardly of the pivotal connection between the body and underframe, and an abutment on the vehicle disposed between said pivotal connections of the link to the vehicle and body to the underframe and in the plane of rotation of said link.

In a dump vehicle in combination, an underframe, a body, a pivotal connection between the body and underframe, a door forming a wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof, a link having one end pivoted to the underframe below the body connection, a link connected to said door, a pivotal connection between said links including means preventing pivotal movement in one direction, and an abutment on the body in the plane of rotation of the inner link to control the opening and closing of the door through move ment of the abutment relative to the connection between the inner link and the underframe as the body moves in the dumping and righting opera* tion,

In a dump vehicle in combination, an underframe, a body supported thereon and turning about an edge thereof in dumping, a door forming a wall of said body and hinged adjacent the oor thereof, a depending member on the door, a jointed link having one end pivotally connected to the door member and the opposite end pivotally connected to the vehicle outwardly of the turning axis of the body, means preventing downward breaking of the said link connection at said joint when the door is in closed position, and an abutment member on the vehicle engaging said link connection inwardly of said joint to limit the opening movement of the door and positively close the opened door as the body moves relative to the underframe in the dumping and righting operation.

In a dump vehicle in combination, an underframe, a body supported thereon in stable equilibrium, a pivotal connection between the body and underfrarne adjacent one edge of the latter, a door forming a wall of said body and hinged adjacent the oor thereof for opening outwardly by gravity as the body is tilted, a depending member on the door, an outer link pivotally mounted on the said depending member, an inner link having its inner end pivotally mounted on the body outwardly of the adjacent pivotal connection between the body and underframe, a pivotal connection between the links, means preventing downward pivotal movement of the links when the door is in closed position, an abutment mounted on the underframe and overlying said inner link when the body is in stable equilibrium, said abutment controlling the opening and closing movements of the door through engagement with said inner link as the body moves the inner link relative to the abutment in the dumping and righting operation.

In a dump vehicle of the character described in combination, an underframe, a body tiltably mounted` thereon, means providing pivotal movement of the body about an edge of the underframe, a door forming a wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof, a member depending from the door, an integral link pivoted to said depending door member, va link pivoted to 'the underframe, a pivotal connection between'the links, said underframe link having afportio'n between the pivotal connections of the link extending towards the body and an abutment on the body for engagement with said portion of the underframe link to control the opening and closing of lthe door as the body moves in the dumping and righting operation.

In a dump vehicle in combination, an underfrarne, a body supported thereon, means adjacent 'one edge of vthe underrame about which the body turns in dumping, `a door forming a wall of Ythe body and hinged adjacent the iloor thereof, a'link pivotally mounted on the door, a link pivotally mounted on 'the underframe outwardly of and below the means on which the body turns in dumping, a pivotal connection between said links and an abutment on the body disposed between Vsaid body turning means on the underframe and the pivotal connection of the said link to the underfrarne, said abutment engaging said underfraine link to control the opening and closing movements of the door as the body moves in the dumping and righting operation.

In a dump vehicle in combination, an underfrarne, a body supported thereon and tiltable toward an edge thereof in dumping, a door forming awall of the body and hinged adjacent the 'floor thereof, a link pivoted at its inner end upon the body outwardly of its tilting axis, an outer link pivoted to the door below the hinge 'connection between the door and body, a pivotal connection between said links, means on said links preventing said connection from breaking downwardly when the body is in normal position, and a Xed abutment disposed in the path of movement of said inner link when the door is open during tilting of the body, said abutment limiting the opening and forcing the closing oi the door through movements of the inner link relative to the abutment during the dumping and righting movements of the body.
17. In a dump vehicle in combination, van underframe, a body supported on the underframe and pivoted thereon in dumping toward an edge thereof, a door forming a wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof, a depending member on the door, an outer link pivoted to the door member, an inner link pivoted to the underframe outwardly of said body pivot, a pivotal connection between said links and an abutment on the vehicle limiting pivotal movement between the links in one direction, said body in dumping moving said links relative to said abutment to control the opening and the closing of the said door.
18. In a dump vehicle in combination, an underframe, a body Supported thereon and tiltable toward an edge thereof upon a pivotal connection between the body and underirame, a door forming a wall of the body and hinged adjacent the floor thereof for opening outwardly and downwardly solely by gravity as the body is tilted, a link pivoted to the door below said hinge connection, a link pivoted to the body and extending toward said door, a pivotal connection, between said links and an abutment on the underframe for engaging the inner link outwardly of its connection to the body to control the movement of the opening and closing door as the body moves in the dumping and righting operations.
