Description

V. M CABE SUPPORTING BASE April 26, 1938.
Filed Dec. 6, 1935 Patented Apr. 26, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT, oF ic E SUPPORTING'BASE Viola McCabe, Miami, Fla. I Application December 6, 1$l35, Serial No. 53,184 I 3 Claims. i (01. us -194) One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a portable supporting base which may be used as a weighted base or as a clampingbase,
Another object of the invention is the provision of a base which is compact, which requires a minimum of space while in use,-and which. is easily and quickly converted from one type of base to the other. I
A further object of the invention is the provision of. a base having arm members for adjust ably supporting a magnifying glass, electric light socket and bulb, or other like article;
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a new article of manufacture which is simple of construction, which is economical to manufacture, and which may be sold to the public ata nominal cost.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will suggest themselves in the course of the following description, and that which 'is new will be correlated'in the appended claims.
The most satisfactory manner of carrying out the principles of my invention in a practical, economical, comprehensive, and efiicient manner is shown in the accompanying one sheet of draw,- ings, in which: 1
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, the same illustrating its use as .a weighted base.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the invention, taken from line 2-.2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the base, taken from line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the base, the same being used as a. clamping base in connection with a solid-top table or the like.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the base indicating the same in connection with a table or other similar support having downwardly extending flanges therearound.
Figure 6 is an isometric detail view'of the main body member of the base.
Figure 7 is an isometric detail view of the clamping member of the base.
Figure 8 is an isometric View of the base in partially assembled condition.
Similar indices designate like parts throughout the several views.
In order that the construction and the advantages of my invention may be more fully understood and appreciated, I will now take up a detailed description thereof, in which I will set forth the same as fully and as comprehensively as I may.
A designates a table or other supporting surface upon which the base is adapted to rest.
2, as shownin Figure 8.
designates the mainbodymember, the same being preferablyformed of metal, or of other suit able material. I designates the inverted -L- shaped notch or groove-which is formed in the rear side of: the mainbody'member l and extends, the fulllengththereof, the same extends forwardly and thence: downwardly, and forms a space for a companion portion of .the clamping member 2. l designates'arearwardly extending channel which is formed the full length of the frontside and; extends rearwardly therefrom andforming a space for the reception of the hinged member 4. I? designates a comparatively smaller and upwardly extending channel formed in the upper surface of the channel the same being formed thefull length of the main body member I and provides a space for the reception of the hinge member 3 of the clamping member 2 designates the main portion of the clamp- 0 ing member, the same forming a surface'upon which the base rests when the same is assembled as" shown in Figures' l, 2, and 3. The main portion 2 hasthe upwardly extending leg 2 formed integrally therewith and at the rear edge thereof with the upwardly extending portion 2', terminatingjn a forwardly extending portion 2 and which is adapted to slide endwise into the upper portion-of the inverted L-shaped groove I of the mai body'member, I, as shown in Figure)? The main portion 2 also has the leg 2 formed integrally with the forward edge thereof, the same being formed at right angles to the main portion 2 and extends upwardly therefrom. The hinge member 3 extends the full length of the portion 2 and has one leaf thereof rigidly secured thereto in any well-known manner. 4 designates the spacing block which is rigidly se cured to the free leaf of the hinge 3 in any wellknown manner. The spacing block 4 extends 40 the full length of the member 2, as shown in Figure 7. The upwardly extending leg 2 has the raised portion 2 formed integrally with the front face thereof, the same having a threaded aperture formed therethrough for the reception of the threaded screw 5 which is adapted to bear, at its inner end, against the spacing block 4.
6 designates the upwardly extending arm which is formed integrally, at its lower end, with the upper portion of the main body member I, the same having an aperture formed through its upper end for the reception of the threaded tension screw 7. 8 designates a second arm member which is adjustably secured, at its lower end, to
the upper end of the arm member 6 by means of p her I; as shown in Figure'B, withtheupwardlg extending leg 2" and the forwardlyjextending portion 2" registeringiwith the inverted L-shape'd the threaded adjusting provides means members 6 and 8 7 l0 designates a clamping member which is for adjustably clamping the (adapted to clamp around the handle portion of V a magnifying glass or the like, the same; having one end of the adjusting screw ,ll' rigidly secured in one side thereof with the opposite end thereof being threaded and projectingthrough an aperture "formed. through the upper-end of the arm member 8'with the threaded nut l2 adv justab-ly securing the same therethrough. l3
designates the handle portion of a magnifying glass, ll designates a rim which surroundsthe glass I 5. V 7 When it wise onto the lower side oftthemainbodymeme groove, and .with thespacin'g block f 'l and the hinge 3- regis'te'ring 'w'ith the channels 'I" and" I respectively of. the main body member I, aiter which the threadedi'screw 5 is 'turned,' thereby V is loosened, and the clamping member? is slipped the Spacing b i ly against the bodymemberl, 1 v o ''When it is desired toclamp the base lonto'the edge of a tableor the like, the threaded screw 5 endwise off of thevmain body, member L. 2,115,27 7 V V t 7 'It will benoted that the design' of the base" and the associated parts thereof, are for the most 7 but I desire 'thatit be screw I, said adjusting" screw having a head portion If formed'on one end thereof with the threaded nut 9 removably secured on the opposite end thereof, and which together at; the ends thereof. a
is desired "to use my supporting -base -as a weighted base, the member 2 is slipped endgetherg part, of square design, understood that minor changes may be made in the several details, and in the arrangement of the parts herein shown and described without departing from the spirit'of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having now fully shown and described the invention, what-I claim and de'sire'to secureby'Letters Patent of the United States, is? 1 1. In a supporting'base, a mainbody member having grooves formed in two opposite "sides thereof, a clamping member having legs formed thereon, said legs being adapted to register with the grooves formed in. the main body member, with said clamping member being adapted to "rslfde' endwiseonto the main body member by means of the legs of the clamping member registering with the grooves of the main b dy memtion; a main body member-having an" L -shap'ed groove formed in one side thereof; a clampingv member havingjan Tisha-pod projection-formed integrally with one side thereojf ,f with the; L'-o shaped projection of the clampingjmember; being 7 adapted to, register with the "-shap;ed grooveof main body member, I y
