A. SEBEK ASHTRAY Filed May 15 1935 Patented Apr. 193s anneal? 1 I Albert seine. 01mm Application my 15, me, Serial No. 79,823
1 Claim. (01. 131-51) i This invention relates ash trays having means for retaining lighted cigarettes or cigars so positioned and arranged respectively to the bowl of the tray that it is practically impossible for a iighted'cigarette or cigar to'drop from its retainer and burn the support on which the tray is mounted. i a
One of the objects of my inventionresides in e the novel design and construction of the retainer for the cigarettes or cigars which constitutes a unitary cast member of comparatively thin wall sections including a central supporting base portion having a pair of opposite and angularly disposed retaining arms formed integrally with said 'central supporting portion, each of said arms havingv an inwardly converging or wedge-like recess adapted to receive and frictionally retain a cigarette or cigar; the retaining portions of the arms being of comparatively thin and preferably 0 of rounded section to presentaminimum of curupwardly from the center of the tray and are" face contact with a cigarette retained therebetween to thereby reduce to the minimum, or practically overcome, the objectionable condensa- "tion of moisture in the portion of the body of the 5 cigarette engaged by the retainer.
Another featureof my invention is found in the angularly disposed retaining recesses which afford convenience and accessibility in inserting and removing the cigarette.
Another feature of my invention resides in the novel construction of the tray which includes the formation of the tray ofa preferably circular bowl-like structure of novel ,wall formation having a novel central integrally-formed support adapted to support the cigarette retainer and an ornament with a single securingmember such as a screw; the central support constituting a hollow upwardly disposed integral portion of the bowl-like tray body adapted to receive the securing member and to conceal it within the hollowed chamber of the central support.
With the above and other objectsin view, my invention consists in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of the parts and mem- 4 bers shown in preferred embodiment in the attached drawing, describedin the following speciiications and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. i I
In the drawing:
viii) Fig. 1 is a plan view of an ash tray embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 isa section taken on line 2-4 vof Fig. l; n y Fig. 31s a section through the central retainer support showing a modified construction.
was In the illustrations, the tray u isshowninthe form oi' a cast bowl-like circular structure having a downwardly and inwardly curved outer peripheral wall portion Ill gradually extended into the annular intermediate horizontal or flattened portion Il forming the tray bottom and which flat- 5' tened portion l0 is extended in an inwardly and upwardly disposed circular wall formation 'constituting a centrally disposed circular hollow support ll having a flattened topiil.
The hollow'support W is provided in its top 10 II, with an opening II and an inner circular shoulder Il The cigarette or cigarretainer i2 is preferably formed of a single die-casting and comprises a comparatively thin central flattened supporting 16 base portion I24 having a centrally located aperture oropening I2 and a pair of oppositely disposed arms l2 formed integrally with the central portion I 2*.
The retaining arms I!" are disposed angularly' my inwardly downwardly converging or wedge-like recess l2 adapted to frictionally retain a cigarette or cigar between the spaced fork-like por- 25 tions [2 which are preferably of rounded crosssection to present a minimum of surface contact with the bodyof a cigarette inserted therebetween. I
Since the cigarette-retaining a l2 'areso mounted in the center of the tray and well within its outer wall margin it is evident that all of the ash from a burning cigarette left in such retain 'ing arm must fall within the bowl and that any remaining portion of a lighted cigarette if displaced from its support in the retainer would fall within the tray.
' I The retainer I! may be cast wlth an integral boss I! of round or square section as preferably shown in Fig. 2, and the opening l0 in the top 0 ll" of the support In maybe formed of a suitable section to receive such boss.
"the retainer I2 is of uniform section in its central portion, that is, the boss I1 and washer l4 shown secured to the support I0 by the screw which extends through the openings in the top 10 and retailner l2 into threaded engagement with the nut I.
I claim: 7
In a combined cigarette holder andtray including a tray comprising a unitary body having a centrally disposed integrally-formed upstanding circular wall with a flattened aperture top; wall'constituting, a hollow support, a.;-clgarette retainer mounted on said support and having a substantially flattened central, base portion with an aperturejn register with the aperture in said in Fig. 2 are omitted and the retainer I 2 is simply v both of said apertures into threaded engagement with the threaded base of said ornament.
